Description
Ketone.Procedure for carrying out Grignard reactions With the collective name As is well known, Grignard reactions are a number of synthetic processes which consist in the fact that halogenated hydrocarbons with metallic magnesium to alkyl (or aryl) 1 \ Iagnesiumhalogeniden and converts these then to aldehydes, Ketones, esters, nitriles or other compounds can act, the erectile Multiple bonds included. The alkyl (or aryl) group is attached to the carbon atom the carbonyl, ester or cyano group or the like; by subsequent hydrolysis of the Reaction mixture is obtained in the cases mentioned alcohols or ketones.
Hierzu benötigt man große Mengen Äther. The alkyl or aryl magnesium halides are usually made in the Make sure that you first get the calculated amount of magnesium (in the form of chips) covered with ether and allowed to drip the alkyl or aryl halide. For this you need large amounts of ether. This fact as well as the one that is frequently observed Delay in the reaction, which usually starts suddenly and very violently, are for technical use the procedural disadvantage. Man 'has already tried to work without ether; but so far this has only been successful when using aromatic halogen compounds, and the yields of aryl magnesium halides were unsatisfactory as a result of side reactions such as the formation of diaryls.
It has now been found that Grignard reactions are advantageous in can carry out the way that one prepares the alkyl or aryl magnesium halide, by using the halogenated hydrocarbon in the manner of a continuous extraction drops onto the magnesium and removes the resulting magnesium compound and continuously flow into the ketone or nitrile to be converted or the ester and the like loads. For this purpose, one can use an arrangement as explained in the drawing will.
In a flask A is the component of the 2nd stage, i. H. the ketone, the ester or the like, diluted with a solvent (ether, petroleum ether, Benzene), the boiling point of which is lower than that of the component itself. The piston A carries a Soxhlet attachment B, which has a pipe connection with tap R to the piston A, a condenser C and a dropping funnel T are provided. In. the essayB, the is conveniently closed at the bottom with a sieve or filter insert, one brings the magnesium. You now load through the dropping funnel T a small amount of the 'halogenated Hydrocarbon dissolved in the same solvent that was used in flask A as Thinner is used, drip onto the magnesium shavings that you previously used some solvent overlaid and in the usual way with iodine or with finished Activated magnesium compound. As soon as the reaction, if necessary after weak Warming of the attachment B from the outside, started and strong blistering resp. Self-heating is noticeable in essay B, one can use the halogenated hydrocarbon add continuously through the dropping funnel T. You open the tap in the connecting pipe R to flask A and charges the organomagnesium halogen compound formed to the extent that as it forms, flow into flask A. She reacts there immediately with the submitted component of the 2nd stage, .d. H. the ketone, ester or the like. Appropriate the cock in tube R is set so that the reaction in flask A results Heat just keeps the solvent boiling. the reaction is not screeching enough is exothermic, the flask A is heated. To improve the yield, it is advisable to to constantly pass some pure nitrogen through the cooler.
When the boiling point of the 2nd stage component is relatively close to the boiling point of the solvent used, e.g. B. acetone ether, it is advisable to fill the connecting tube V between the piston A and the Soxhlet attachment B with Raschig rings or to cool it so that mainly only the solvent comes into contact with the magnesium.
The main advantages of the process are that only small Amount of solvent is required and thus avoids the otherwise possible dangers. In addition, the reaction time and the yield of the end product are shortened considerably elevated.
The saving in solvents has a positive effect, as with the usual extraction processes, especially with larger batches. It is easily possible to transfer the described arrangement to a larger scale. It can also be charged continuously by simple modification by introducing fresh magnesium from time to time through a sluice device into vessel B and fresh ketone or the like into vessel A, and from vessel A the formed end product withdraws.
A method and an apparatus are known from the American patent specification 2,066,198 for converting hydrocarbon halides and magnesium with the addition of appropriate amounts of solvent in continuous operation to solutions of the corresponding Grignard compounds. In contrast, the essence of the present process consists in converting any desired amounts of halogenated hydrocarbons and magnesium, in the cycle of a practically constant, small amount of solvent, apart from inevitable small losses, in the manner of a continuous extraction. The present process teaches for the first time to carry out Grignard syntheses with the most economical consumption of ether on an industrial scale, and thus represents a great advance. EXAMPLE i Vessel B is filled with suction magnesium shavings, which are etched with 1 cc of isopropylinagnesium chloride to dissolve them. From the dropping funnel 7 ', 26o g of isopropyl chloride, dissolved in 26o ccm of ether, are added dropwise. A mixture of 3009 technical isobutyron and 600 ccm of ether is placed in flask A. Nitrogen is introduced into the cooler B.
The reaction is complete after q1 / 2 hours. After the usual decomposition of the reaction mixture with ice and sulfuric acid and work-up, 311 g of an alcohol mixture containing triisopropylcarbinol are obtained.
When carrying out the reaction with the same amounts of magnesium, isopropyl chloride and isobutyron in the usual manner in two stages (also under nitrogen), 71/2 hours and at least 36oo ccine of ether were required; the yield was 264 g of the alcohol mixture. Beispie12 In accordance with the procedure in Example i, a solution of 95 g of ethyl chloride in 95 ccm of ether is loaded onto 24 g of magnesium and the resulting ethylmagnesium chloride solution flows into a solution of 96 g of fluorenone in 500 ccm of ether as it arises. Conventional work-up gives 10 g of ethylfluorenol which, after recrystallizing once from a mixture of alcohol and water, has the known melting point of 100 to 10 °.
