Description
Process for the production of ingots from refractory metals The production of moldings from refractory metals such as molybdenum, tungsten, Tantalum, niobium, zirconium or their alloys were mainly based on powder metallurgy Ways, because in this case the high melting temperature of these metals is not reached must become. Apart from the fact that powder metallurgical processes are quite costly are, it is possible with their help to produce only relatively small moldings.
In order to avoid these disadvantages, one has already thought of Ingots made from refractory metals by melting down the refractory To generate metal in a vacuum arc. When melting molybdenum in a vacuum arc So far one has proceeded in such a way that one either pressed individually from metal powder and has used sintered rods in the melting apparatus or else, that the metal powder is pressed in the vacuum of the melting apparatus in the form of pills and the pills in a row are sintered together to form a rod by direct current passage Has. In both cases, however, it has proven necessary to use the metal powder add some carbon to ensure proper deoxidation of the metal is guaranteed during melting. It has been shown that there is already a salary A few hundredths of a percent oxygen is enough to break the molybdenum after it has melted extremely brittle and unusable for further processing. The admixture of carbon but again has the disadvantage that it to education comes from molybdenum carbide, which increases the mechanical properties of molybdenum as well to be worsened.
The invention relates to a method for producing ingots from refractory metals by melting in a vacuum arc and consists of that produced by extrusion of metal powder with organic additives and Rods sintered in a hydrogen atmosphere are used in the melting apparatus. The method according to the invention makes it possible, on the one hand, to achieve an economical To manufacture the rods used in the melting apparatus, on the other hand, by sintering in hydrogen, the rods are made of high-melting point Metal thoroughly deoxidized. The organic binder that decomposes during sintering leaves some of the carbon in a finely divided form, which leaves a further reducing one Effect when melting in the arc. In this finely divided form the carbon hardly has a disruptive effect through the formation of carbides.
An example of an organic binder is starchy glue suitable, which is added to the high-melting powders in an amount of 1 to 3% can be. The well mixed mass is placed in an extruder and pressed through, an endless strand. of a cross-section different from that of the Mouthpiece is determined through which the plastic mass is pressed. A desired length of that strand is cut and sintered. During the Pre-sintering, the binding agent is removed and the strand part finally thereupon sintered to a rod of desired density of about 8o to 9o%. The strand can be pressed vertically downwards or horizontally on a belt-like conveyor that continuously feeds the strand to the pre-sintering furnace. The pre-sintering furnace The exiting strand may or will be the desired length of the feeder Cut off length and put in oven for final sintering. It is also possible, the strand or part of it in the same furnace of the appropriate length and ready to sinter. If the length of the rod formed by the final sintered strand is insufficient, two or more such bars can be connected in series, as shown previously with individually manufactured bars. The cross section the strand can have any desired shape, such as a square, rectangular, oval or round. Its area can correspond to that of a single bar column, as shown in FIG. 2, or that of a multiple column as shown in FIG.
Hollow electrodes 38, 39, e.g. B. made of copper, are on opposite sides Sides of the rod 25 angeordtiet and shaped so that they the rod 25 on a possible touch a large area. Coolant, e.g. B. water, the electrode 38 is through a rigid tube 4o of insulating material is fed and from the electrode 38 to the electrode 39 through the flexible tubes 41, 42 made of conductive material, e.g. B. The lower end of the bolt 46 is through an insulating conductor 5o with the Terminal 51 connected.
A contact 52 is applied to the insulation 21 and through the welded bolt 53 connected to the insulated conductor 54 leading to the other Terminal 55 leads. The bolt 53 is surrounded by the insulating sleeve 56 and a washer 57 made of insulating material separates the nuts at the lower end of the bolt 53 from the Base plate i9.
An airtight housing 58 defines a space 82 around that previously described Device around. It can be made of insulating material and a bell, as shown, form, or be made of a metal (iron) pipe of sufficient length, a cover plate made of metal (iron) is welded or screwed to airtight is. The flange 59 at the lower end of the housing 58 rests on a resilient, airtight and insulating gasket 6o, which is in a circular cavity in the base plate i9 is stored and attached to it airtight by means of a suitable number of clamps 61 and screws 62 is clamped.
The tube 63 is passed through the base plate 19 in an airtight manner and is provided with two drainage openings 64, 65 with downwardly tapering holes 66, 67 into which conical hollow ends 68, 69 of the tubes 40 and 23 respectively fit tightly to form a tight connection . Another tube 70 is passed through the base plate 19 in an airtight manner and is provided with the inlet openings 71, 72, which are shaped similarly to the drain openings 64, 65 and in their downwardly tapering holes the hollow cones 73, 74 at the end of the tubes 24 and 43, respectively fit tightly. A cooling liquid, such as water, is fed to the pipe 63 through a Halin 75 in the direction of the arrow 76, branches off through the drainage openings 64, 65 to the electrodes 38, 39 and to the hollow cooling space 22 of the crucible 2o and passes through the pipes 43 , 24, the hollow cones 73, 74 and the inlet openings 71, 72 in the pipe 70, from which it flows through another tap 77 in the direction of the arrow 78. Of course, the coolant can also be passed through in the opposite direction through the system described.
Wechselstrom wird von jedweder geeigneten Quelle (nicht dargestellt) mittels eines verstellbaren Transformators 87 zu einem Doppelschalter 79 geführt, um die Anschlüsse 51, 55 und dadurch den Schmelztiegel 20 und die Elektroden 38, 39 an jene Stromquelle ein- bzw. von ihr abzuschalten.AC power is supplied from any suitable source (not shown) led to a double switch 79 by means of an adjustable transformer 87, around the connections 51, 55 and thereby the crucible 20 and the electrodes 38, 39 to switch that power source on or off.
A pipe 8o is airtight through a. Hole in the base plate i9 passed through and connected to the vacuum pump 81.
During operation, the crucible is placed on the insulation 21 and the contact 52 is placed in the said insulation, the cavity 22 of the crucible being connected by the hollow cones 69, 73 to the pipes 63, 70 for the cooling liquid. A rod of separately sintered refractory material 25 is placed between the guide rollers 27,28 and slides down between them and in contact with the electrodes 38,39 which have previously been placed in the position shown, to contact the bottom 35 of the crucible 20. The housing 58 is then placed in its place and clamped to the base plate 19 in an airtight manner. The coolant is then let in to pass through the. Circling cavity 22 of crucible 20 and electrodes 38, 39 by properly opening or adjusting taps 75, 77. The air is then pumped out of space 82 until a vacuum of 10 -3 to 10 -5 mm Mercury is generated. If necessary, a neutral gas such as iielium, neon or argon can be admitted into the evacuated space. The switch 79 is now closed and alternating current is passed through the circuit which comprises the electrodes 38, 39, the part of the rod 25 between the electrodes and the bottom 35 of the crucible, the outer wall 83 of the crucible and the contact plate 52. Immediately the hand wheel 34 is rotated to slowly raise the rod 25, creating an electric arc between the lower end of the rod 25 and the bottom wall 35 of the crucible. The current strength is regulated, for example, by adjusting the secondary winding of the transformer 87, so that a current of approximately 4,000 to 6,000 amps. is passed through the arc if a molybdenum rod with a cross-section of 40 X 40 mm is melted; a voltage of 4 to 6 volts is sufficient.
The moment the arc is formed, it is heat-resistant Metal melted down and touched the cooled bottom 35 of the crucible 2o, effectively removing heat from the melt in order to solidify it immediately bring. Other molten material is deposited on the melt that has solidified in this way the rod 25 deposited, which becomes the first deposited heat-resistant Metal flows, touches the cooled floor 35 and also freezes. It forms themselves gradually an ingot within the crucible 2o, which consists of solidified and fused refractory metal and a flat one liquid melt crater adjoining the lower end of rod 25. Because the horizontal cross-section of the crucible is coarser than that of the rod 25, the level of the solidified ingot rises with the melting crater of limited Expansion slower as the end of the rod is melted; accordingly the rod 25 is slowly moved downward by turning the handwheel 34, so that the distance between the lower end of the rod 25 and the rising mirror of the melt crater remains essentially unchanged and the arc is maintained will.
The cooling liquid is passed through the cavity 22 of the crucible 2o carried out at such a speed that its inner wall 21 and the Bottom 35 at a temperature below the melting and softening point of the crucible material is held. For this purpose z. $. Copper or any other electrically conductive material Material of the same or a higher melting point suitable for the Temperature of the crucible with the refractory metal melted in it chemically does not react.
Since the inner wall 2i is tapered downward by a few degrees, becomes facilitates removal of the finished ingot from the crucible. Because the instant cooling and solidification of the molten metal on contact no diffusion can occur with the bottom 35 and the wall 21 of the crucible; the purity of the metal from which the ingot is made depends only on the purity of the rod 25. Since the manufacture of the latter in a separate If a process is carried out that ensures the highest level of purity, an ingot is obtained immediately made of refractory metal or an alloy of two or more refractory metals Metals in the proportions in which they were added to rod 25.
When the ingot is fully formed, power is turned off at 79. The flow of cooling liquid is continued until the ingot as a whole on a Temperature has cooled down, at which it cannot oxidize in contact with air. After this temperature is reached, the vacuum pump 81 is switched off and air let into room 82. After reaching atmospheric pressure in room 82 will be the clamping devices 6i, 62 removed and the housing 58 lifted. The one not melted down and still located between the guide rollers 27, 28 and the electrodes 38, 39 Part of the rod 25 is slightly lifted by turning the handwheel 34. The coolant is shut off by first tapping the tap 75 and after emptying the cavity 22 of the crucible 2o the cock 77 are closed. Now becomes the melting pot 2o with the solidified ingot in it and lifted by tilting the crucible 2o the solidified ingot made of refractory metal fell out.
By a suitable choice of the crucible 2o one can get an ingot of Get the desired shape. By appropriate dimensioning of the rod 25 according to Fig. 2 and 3, you can get a use that is at least sufficient to a Fill melting pot. It was found that a cooled crucible made of copper corresponds to the purpose of the invention, and it is usually not necessary its bottom 35 at the point where the rod 25 touches it, in order to create the arc to let, with a plate of refractory material of a melting point, which is equal to or higher than that of the rod 25 to be reinforced. Such However, reinforcement can be provided if desired.
If the housing 58 is made of opaque material, can one or more openings, hermetically sealed by suitable glass, at corresponding ones Place the housing to allow observation of the melting process allow what is particularly valuable for the operation of the handwheel 34. It can also be an automatic device, e.g. B. reversible auxiliary motor with adjustable speed, are provided, which the rod 25 against the Crater in the container 20 as a function of the density of the feeding the arc Stroms, leads.
