Die Wirkung der meisten bisher gebräuchlichen Gasreinigungsmassen beruht auf dem mehr oder weniger grofsen Gehalt an Eisenoxyd. Gerade durch dieses Zinkoxyd wird die in dem Leuchtgase enthaltene Kohlensäure vollkommen entfernt. Die Beseitigung der übrigen Unreinigkeiten beruht zum grofsen Theil auf der Einwirkung des Zinkes, welches stets in dem als Abfallproduct aus den Verzinkereien stammenden Eisenchlorür enthalten ist. Eine Auflockerung durch künstliche Mittel, wie z. B. Sägespäne, welche die Wirkung der Reinigungsmasse erheblich beeinträchtigen, ist also nicht erforderlich. Hierzu kommt noch, dafs die zu der neuen Masse1 verwendeten Abfall- bezw. Nebenproducte bisher einer Ausnutzung nicht fähig waren und sehr, viel Raum in Anspruch nahmen, bis sie schliefslich unter grofsem Kostenaufwand weggeschafft werden mufsten.
