Description
KAISERLICHES
PATENTAMT.
Vorliegende Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren - zur Darstellung von Methylenbivanillin
aus Metbylenbiisoeugenol, indem dieses letztere mit einem geeigneten Oxydationsmittel,
wie z. B. Chromsäure in essigsaurer Lösung, behandelt wird.
Methylenbivanillin ist vorzüglich zur Darstellung von Vanillin geeignet und das zur
Darstellung desselben gebrauchte Methylenbiisoeugenol wird vorzugsweise aus Eugenol hergestellt,
indem man durch Einwirkung von Methylenchlorid, -bromid bezw. -jodid auf das
Kali- bezw. Natronsalz des Eugenols das Methylenbieugenol darstellt, welches durch Erhitzen
mit Aetznatron bezw. Kali in alkoholischer Lösung in Methylenbiisoeugenol übergeführt
wird.
I. Darstellung des Methylenbieugenols.
ι kg Eugenol, 0,260 kg Aetznatron, 3 1 Alkohol und 0,270 kg bis 0,300 kg Methylenchlorid
werden zusammen in geschlossenem Gefäfse während 5 bis 6 Stunden auf 1000C. erwärmt;
nach Abdestilliren des Alkohols wird das Reactionsproduct durch Zusatz von Wasser
ausgefällt.
Das so erhaltene Methylenbieugenol stellt sich als ein schwerflüssiges OeI dar, das in
annäherndem Vacuum bei 2620 C. siedet und aus Ligrom in bei 28 ° C. schmelzenden Nadeln
krystallisirt.
Es entspricht folgender Constitutionsformel:

II. Darstellung des Methylenbiisoeugenols.
ι kg Methylenbieugenol, 2,500 kg Kali und 51 Alkohol werden am Rückflufskühler während
24 Stunden zum Kochen gebracht. Nach Abdestilliren des Alkohols wird durch Zusetzen
von Wasser ein OeI ausgefällt, das bald in eine kristallinische Masse übergeht, die durch
Auspressen gereinigt werden kann. Aus Ligro'in krystallisirt das Methylenbiisoeugenol in seidenartigen
Büscheln, die bei 50 bis 520 C. ihren Schmelzpunkt haben. Dieses Product hat
seinen Siedepunkt in annäherndem Vacuum bei 2720 bis 2730 C. Es entspricht der Constitutionsformel

III. Darstellung des Met hylenbivanillins.
In ι kg Methylenbüsoeugenol, das in ι ο kg
Essigsäure aufgelöst worden ist, wird allmälig eine Lösung von 0,870 kg Chromsäure in
1,500 kg Wasser eingetragen, indem die Masse auf Wasserbadtemperatur erhitzt wird. Das
durch einen Wasserzusatz ausgefällte Reactionsproduct bildet ein krystallinisches Pulver, das
sich mit den Bisulfiten der Alkalien combinirt.
Aus Alkohol oder Essigsäure krystallisirt das Methylenbivanillin in feinen Nadeln, deren
Schmelzpunkt bei 155 bis 156° C. liegt.
Es entspricht folgender Constitutionsformel:

Das durch Oxydation in Methylenbivanillin übergeführte Methylenbüsoeugenol könnte selbstverständlich
auch auf andere, als die vorbeschriebene Weise hergestellt werden. Man könnte z. B. dasselbe auch aus Isoeugenol darstellen,
indem man dieses letztere bezw. dessen Kali- bezw. Natronsalz mit Methylenchlorid,
-bromid bezw. -jodid behandeln würde.
Das beschriebene Verfahren zur Darstellung eines Vanillinderivates mittelstMethylenbiisoeugenols,
d. h. eines bimolecularen Formaldehydderivates des Eugenols, hat den Vortheil, dafs
bei der Oxydation des Methylenbiisoeugenols zu Methylenbivanillin der Phenolrest OH des
Isoeugenol so zu sagen durch sich selbst geschützt ist, indem 2 Molecule Isoeugenol durch
das Radical CH0 verbunden sind und infolge dessen das Methylenbüsoeugenol dem Oxydationsverfahren
sehr gut widersteht, so dafs eine bessere Ausbeute an dem Vanillinderivat
erzielt wird, als dies bei den bekannten Verfahren der Darstellung von Acetyl- und Benzylvanillin
durch Oxydation von Acetyl- bezw. Benzylisoeugenol der Fall ist.
Ferner bildet das mit dem beschriebenen Verfahren erhaltene Methylenbivanillin ein
äufserst vorteilhaftes Ausgangsmaterial zur Darstellung von Vanillin, weil dasselbe sehr
leicht in ein Chlorderivat übergeführt werden kann, das eine nur sehr geringe Stabilität besitzt
und sich schon in Gegenwart der geringsten Feuchtigkeit glatt in Kohlensäure, Salzsäure
und Vanillin zersetzt, indem hierbei eine der theoretischen annähernde Ausbeute an Vanillin
erzielt wird.
