Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method and a device for mixing a second medium with a first medium. The method and the device according to the invention are particularly suitable for mixing various chemicals, both liquid and gaseous, or steam with a so-called first medium, which is composed of both solid and liquid material, such as cellulose fiber suspensions from the wood processing industry or mixtures of, for example, various beet pulp (such as potato and sugar beet) and water.
Prior art mixers used for this purpose are shown, for example, in US patents 5,279,709 and 5,575,559 and in patent applications EP-A-92921912, EP-A-9100973, WO-A-96/32186 and WO-A-96/33007. It is a characteristic feature of all prior art mixers that they use a rotating rotor to achieve a sufficient mixing effect. In particular, the rotating rotor refers to an element that is connected to the drive via a shaft and usually receives its driving energy from the factory's power supply. Furthermore, the mixer design is usually such that a certain pressure loss occurs in the mixer. In practice, this means that the energy compensation corresponding to the pressure loss caused by the mixer has been taken into account when selecting a pump that operates at any stage of the process and is installed upstream of the mixer. In practice, energy is thus lost in the pump to compensate for the pressure loss caused by the mixer, as well as in the mixer itself to rotate its rotor.
The method and device according to the invention eliminate one of the energy loss factors mentioned above. The impeller of the mixer is arranged in such a way that it rotates freely in the flow, whereby the mixer naturally causes a certain pressure loss. However, thorough research has brought such results that the pressure loss is not, at least not significantly, higher than with a motor-driven mixer. runners. Moreover, despite considerable energy savings, no change in the mixed result can be found, at least not for the worse.
So-called static mixers are known from the prior art, but they are mostly of the type shown, for example, in US patents 4,030,969, 5,492,409 and 5,556,200, where a throttling effect of a certain degree is arranged in the flow channel, whereby the flow speed increases and the pressure decreases. The chemical or the corresponding mixed material is then transported into this zone of lower pressure, and the turbulence effect, which is also caused by throttling, then mixes the chemical or the like with the actual flow material. Another alternative is shown, for example, in US patents 4,936,689 and 5,564,827, where the flow channel is provided with flow obstacles in order to generate turbulence. It is a characteristic feature of both types of mixers that the turbulence generated is only of a local nature and of short duration.
By means of the method and device according to the present invention, the kinetic energy of the mixing zone resulting from the pressure losses caused by the throttling device can be directed in a more controlled manner and over a larger area, which significantly increases the effective mixing volume and significantly extends the mixing time.
It is a characteristic feature of the method according to the invention for mixing a second medium with a first medium, in which method the first medium is introduced into a housing of a mixing device, where it is mixed and from which it is discharged, that the rotor of the mixer arranged in the housing is rotated by a medium flow entering the housing.
It is a characteristic feature of the device according to the invention for mixing a second medium with a first medium, which device comprises a mixer housing with an inlet and an outlet, both of which have a flange, and with a rotor, that the rotor is freely rotatable.
Other aspects characteristic of the method and device according to the invention are apparent from the appended claims.
Das Verfahren und die Vorrichtung gemäß der Erfindung werden nachstehend detaillierter, mit Verweis auf die beigefügten Zeichnungen beispielhaft beschrieben, woThe method and device according to the invention are described in more detail below, with reference to the accompanying drawings by way of example, where

Fig. 1 shows a device according to a preferred embodiment, which comprises a housing 10 which in its simplest form is cylindrical in the flow direction of the medium, but may also be cylindrical in the direction of the rotor shaft. The housing 10 of the mixer may also have another, more complicated shape if it is considered reasonable. The housing 10 is provided with an inlet 12 and an outlet 16 with flanges 14 and 18 respectively, the outlet preferably being tangential to the direction of rotation of the rotor, and with a rotor 20 which is rotatably arranged within the housing 10. The mixer is attached via its flange 14 to a so-called inlet line, i.e. the flow channel for the incoming fiber suspension, and via its flange 18 to a so-called outlet line, i.e. the flow channel for the fiber suspension draining from the mixer. The rotor 20 is formed by a shaft 22 mounted on bearings on a wall of the housing 10, which shaft is preferably perpendicular to the axis X of the housing 10. However, other positions of the shaft 22 with different angles with respect to the axis X are also conceivable and in some cases even recommended. In fact, it is entirely possible for the rotor shaft to be congruent or at least parallel with the inlet axis. In this case, the rotor blades should be helical so that the rotor would rotate. At least two blades 24 are attached to that end of the shaft 22 which extends into the interior of the housing 10, so that as the blades 24 rotate, an open space remains in the center of the rotor 20. The embodiment shown in Fig. 1 is provided with five blades 24 and in cross-section they are essentially rectangular, while the main axis is radial. The most important thing about the shape of the blades, however, is that it sets the rotor in rotation and also brings about the desired mixing effect. The blades 24 preferably extend to a distance of approximately 10 to 80 mm from the wall of the housing 10. The rotor 20 can be arranged in the housing 10 either centrally, so that the distance of the circle of rotation C of the blades 24 from the wall of the housing 10 is the same on both sides of the rotor 20, or eccentrically, so that the gap between the circle of rotation C and the wall of the housing 10 is smaller on one side of the rotor 20 than on the other side. The rotor 20, or more precisely the rotor blades, can e.g. have a shape such that the shape of the surface of rotation is substantially spherical or cylindrical. Other shapes of the surface of rotation are also conceivable, as long as they are adapted to the cross-sectional shape of the housing. The housing can also be provided with ribs 26 and 28 which, together with the rotor 20, generate turbulence which brings about a sufficient mixing effect in the suspension flow. The rib 26 is arranged in connection with the inlet 12 such that it directs the axial flow from the inlet 12 to the housing 10 of the mixer to one side of the housing 10, thereby ensuring the rotation of the rotor 20. That is, instead of being an inclined guide member as in Fig. 1, the rib 26 can also e.g. For example, it could be a plate arranged perpendicular to the axis of the flow path, which covers part of the flow path. The most important thing is that the organ shifts the center of gravity of the flow away from the axis of the flow channel.
The freely rotating mixer shown in Fig. 1 is as such suitable for use with the heat exchanger shown in Fig. 6 of PCT/FI96/00330, where two heat exchangers are connected in series so that the pipe between the heat exchangers is provided with a mixing element. According to our experiments, the mixer does not need to fluidize pulp at all; "stirring" is sufficient for thoroughly mixing pulp particles with each other, no matter how large they are at this stage. In any case, as a final result of the mixing, there is a plug of pulp of a new size at the inlet of the heat exchanger, which is distributed in a new way over the heat transfer surfaces of the latter heat exchanger. The mixer can be, for example, a device similar to that in Fig. 1 or a device where the mixing element is a circular or elliptical ring which rotates freely in the flow under the action of the flow.
Fig. 1 further illustrates how the mixer housing can be provided with an auxiliary, ie a control valve 30, either as an integral part of the mixer or optionally attached to the mixer flange 14. The control valve 30 shown in Fig. 1 is a conventional slide valve, but other forms of valve can also be used. One function of the valve 30 is of course to regulate the flow, and arranging the rotor 20 close to the valve 30 also contributes to the function of the valve 30 by ensuring that fibres do not collect at the slide or the other valve member and result in gradual blockage of the valve opening 32. Another function of the valve 30 is essential for the mixer, namely that it introduces the flow into the mixer housing 10 in an eccentric manner. By ensuring that the flow entering the housing 10 is eccentric, particularly with respect to the rotor shaft, one can be sure that the rotor 20 will rotate in the direction of arrow A under all circumstances.
Fig. 1 also shows how either the mixer housing 10 or the feed line can be provided with a nozzle 38, 38' for adding a chemical, diluent liquid, steam or other material to the flow. The valve possibly attached to the flange 14 of the housing 10 can be considered as part of the feed line. The location of a chemical addition nozzle is optimally chosen both with regard to the mixer operation and the medium to be mixed. For example, when liquid is introduced, it is advantageous to direct the incoming liquid jet in the direction of rotation of the rotor in order not to slow down the rotation. Accordingly, the inlet nozzle for gas is preferably arranged in the lower part of the housing and the outlet in the upper part of the same so that the gas flow moves reliably from the inlet to the outlet. In the example described above, where the mixture was used only to compensate for temperature differences in the pulp, such a nozzle is of course not necessary. It should be noted that the mixing nozzle 38 must preferably be located far enough from the outlet 16 of the mixer housing 10 so that the chemical or the like has sufficient time to mix well enough with the pulp before being discharged from the mixer. A guideline could be that the mixing nozzle 38 should be located at an angular distance of at least 90 degrees, preferably 180 degrees, from the outlet 16 in relation to the direction of rotation of the rotor. Of course, it must be noted that the medium to be mixed also sets its own restrictions on the location of the mixing nozzle.
Fig. 2 shows a mixing device according to a second preferred embodiment. Where applicable, the same reference numerals have been used as in Fig. 1, with the difference that all reference numerals of Fig. 2 begin with the number 1. In fact, there are not many differences compared to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, a valve 130 is shown as a member that is clearly separated from the housing 10 of the mixer, which member is attached to a flange 114 of the housing. Another difference consists in arranging the outlet 116 of the housing at an angle of 90 degrees, or if widening of the outlet is taken into account, at an angle of approximately 100 degrees with respect to the inlet line. Furthermore, the outlet 116 is provided with an outlet pipe 140 which widens in the flow direction preferably just like a diffuser pipe. The purpose of widening the outlet channel 140 is to recover dynamic pressure from the flow leaving the housing 10 of the mixer.
Fig. 3 shows a mixing device according to a third preferred embodiment. Where applicable, the same reference numerals have been used as in Fig. 1, with the difference that all reference numerals in Fig. 3 begin with the number 2. In the embodiment of Fig. 3, the outlet 216 of the mixer is arranged opposite the inlet 212 of the mixer. Furthermore, the outlet 216 is provided with an outlet pipe 240 as in Fig. 2. In contrast to the outlet pipe 140 of Fig. 2, which is an integral part of the mixer housing 10, the outlet pipe 240 of Fig. 3 is attached to the flange 218 of the outlet 216 of housing 10. Of course, the position and type of fastening of the outlet pipe are not dependent on each other, but a detachable outlet pipe can also be arranged in a mixer with side discharge as in Fig. 2, and a stationary outlet pipe can also be arranged in an arrangement as shown in Fig. 3.
The device according to the preferred embodiments of the invention described above functions in such a way that the throttling effected by either a valve or a rib on the inlet side of the mixer regulates the speed of the fibre suspension jet entering the mixer so that it is preferably in the range of 5 to 30 m/s, more preferably in the range of 10 to 20 m/s. The interaction of the deflection of the flow from the central flow direction and said flow speed causes the rotor 20 arranged in the housing 10 to rotate. In operation, the mixer causes a pressure loss in the order of 0.5 to 3.5 bar, preferably 0.5 to 2.5 bar, the pressure loss being largely caused by the throttling effected by a valve or a rib 26 at the mixer inlet. The pressure loss can therefore be controlled by adjusting the inlet side throttling. On the other hand, the total pressure loss caused by the mixer can be reduced by designing the discharge pipe on the outlet side of the mixer optimally, i.e. in such a way that part of the dynamic pressure is recovered.
As can be seen from the few exemplary preferred embodiments described above, a completely new type of mixer has been developed which is advantageous in terms of economic efficiency. Although the application of the method and the device above was presented very generally for the mixing of a fiber suspension, they can be used well up to a consistency of 15%. On the other hand, speaking of fiber suspensions may seem limited; it is therefore worth mentioning that the mixer according to the invention can be used accordingly, for example in various applications in the food industry, for the treatment of mixtures of solids and liquids, for example in the treatment of beet pulp.
