Description
This invention relates to low molecular weight vinylidene fluoride (VF2) copolymers that are curable at low temperatures to form rubbery materials.
High molecular weight fluoroelastomers exhibit excellent heat and chemical resistance. As a result, they have found use as polymeric components of gaskets, wire sheaths and diaphragms exposed to high temperatures and corrosive gases. To fully develop their desired physical properties, fluoroelastomers must be vulcanized at relatively high temperatures above 100°C in the presence of cross-linking agents. Coating and sealing compositions are generally based on low molecular weight polymer compositions that are cured at low temperatures. It is therefore desirable to have coating and sealing compositions that have the heat and chemical resistance of high molecular weight fluoroelastomers, but that can be cured at room temperature, preferably in the absence of solvents. Such compositions are not yet commercially available.
Copolymere von VF&sub2;, Hexafluoropropylen (HFP) und Perfluoro(alkylvinyl)ethern der Formel Copolymers of VF₂, hexafluoropropylene (HFP) and perfluoro(alkylvinyl)ethers of the formula
wobei n = 2-12 bedeutet,where n = 2-12,
These compositions are high molecular weight products which are solids at room temperature and are Emulsion copolymerization at 50ºC using ammonium persulfate as initiator. The high molecular weight of these compositions does not allow their use in solvent-free sealants cured at low temperatures.
Low molecular weight copolymers of VF2 and HFP having molecular weights of 1000 to 22000 and where the ratio of VF2 to HFP is on the order of 70:30 to 45:55 are also known. For example, US-A-3,069,401 discloses the preparation of VF2/HFP copolymers at a temperature of 100-250°C in the presence of peroxide initiators. Such compositions are useful as plasticizers in fluorocarbon elastomers where they serve to improve processability. The low molecular weight copolymers are co-vulcanized with the fluorocarbon elastomers at temperatures greater than 150°C. Such compositions cannot be cured at room temperature to form rubbery materials and are therefore unsuitable for use in seals and coatings intended for low temperature applications.
Room temperature liquid iodine containing VF₂ copolymers can be obtained by copolymerization of VF₂ with one or more fluoroolefins, such as hexafluoropropylene, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluoroethylene, vinyl fluoride, chlorotrifluoroethylene, pentafluoropropylene, perfluorocyclobutene, perfluoro(methylvinyl)ether, perfluoro(ethylvinyl)ether or perfluoro(propylvinyl)ether. Such liquid copolymers are disclosed in US-A-4,361,678. These copolymers contain 10-90 (preferably 40-80) mol% VF₂ and 1-30 (preferably 2-20) wt% terminal iodine and have molecular weights of 900-10,000. They can be crosslinked by organic peroxides, polyhydroxy compounds and polyamines. However, the crosslinking processes take place at 100°C and cannot be adapted for curing at room temperature. In addition, the process disclosed in US-A-4,361,678 leads to low yields.
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Copolymer mit niedrigem Molekulargewicht aus Vinylidenfluorid mit einem Molekulargewichts-Zahlenmittel von 2500-15000(ebullioskopisch bestimmt durch Lösen einer Gewichtsmenge von Copolymer in Pentafluorochlorbenzol), umfassend copolymerisierte Einheiten eines a) Vinylidenfluorids, b) eine zweite Comonomereinheit der FormelThe present invention relates to a low molecular weight copolymer of vinylidene fluoride having a number average molecular weight of 2500-15000 (determined by ebullioscopic means by dissolving a weight amount of copolymer in pentafluorochlorobenzene) comprising copolymerized units of a a) vinylidene fluoride, b) a second comonomer unit of the formula
-CF&sub2;CFQ-,-CF2CFQ-,
wobei Q = F, Cl, CF&sub3;, OCF&sub3;, OC&sub2;F&sub5; oder OC&sub3;F&sub7;, vorzugsweise CF&sub3;, OCF&sub3; oder OC&sub3;F&sub7; ist,where Q = F, Cl, CF₃, OCF₃, OC₂F₅ or OC₃F₇, preferably CF₃, OCF₃ or OC₃F₇ ,
und c) eine dritte Comonomereinheit mit der Formeland c) a third comonomer unit having the formula

wobei R'f = (CF&sub2;)&sub3;COOR, (CF&sub2;)&sub5;COOR, (CF&sub2;)&sub3;OCF(CF&sub3;)COOR,where R'f = (CF2 )3 COOR, (CF2 )5 COOR, (CF2 )3 OCF(CF3 )COOR,
und R = C&sub1;-C&sub6;-Alkyl ist,and R = C₁-C₆ alkyl,
und wobei das Molverhältnis der copolymerisierten Einheiten von Vinylidenfluorid zu zweitem Comonomer und zu dritten Comonomeren (15-120) : (3,5-32,5) : (1,5-4,0) beträgt.and wherein the molar ratio of the copolymerized units of vinylidene fluoride to second comonomer and to third comonomers is (15-120) : (3.5-32.5) : (1.5-4.0).
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ferner ein Verfahren zur Herstellung der vorstehend definierten Copolymeren mit niedrigem Molekulargewicht, wobei das Verfahren das in Kontakt Bringen in Lösung von Vinylidenfluorid mit den zweiten und dritten Comonomeren in einem inerten Lösungsmittel bei einer Temperatur von 20ºC-100ºC in Gegenwart eines Initiators der FormelThe present invention further relates to a process for preparing the low molecular weight copolymers defined above, which process comprises contacting in solution vinylidene fluoride with the second and third comonomers in an inert solvent at a temperature of 20°C-100°C in the presence of an initiator of the formula
[C&sub2;F&sub5;(CF&sub2;OC(CF&sub3;)F)xCOO]&sub2;,[C2 F5 (CF2 OC(CF3 )F)xCOO]2 ,
wobei x = 1-3 ist, umfaßt, und worin das Molverhältnis von Vinylidenfluorid zu dem zweiten Comonomer und zu dem dritten Comonomer 1 : (1,2-0.,1) : (0,02-0,1) beträgt.where x = 1-3, and wherein the molar ratio of vinylidene fluoride to the second comonomer and to the third comonomer is 1:(1.2-0.1):(0.02-0.1).
The present invention also relates to a composition comprising the copolymer as defined above and a fluorinated alcohol of the formula H(CF₂CF₂)nCH₂OH, where n = 1 to 4.
The compositions of the present invention are low molecular weight vinylidene fluoride copolymers that are liquids at room temperature and that can be used without solvents or with small amounts of solvents to make seals and coatings that have excellent resistance to fuels and chemicals. In addition, the copolymers are curable at relatively low temperatures, including room temperature, and can be used to make molded parts. Solvent-free seals are desirable because the presence of solvents leads to shrinkage and porosity. Such problems are exacerbated when vulcanization takes place at elevated temperatures.
Diese Comonomere fungieren als Härtungsstellen und sind ausgewählt aus der Gruppe bestehend aus Verbindungen mit der FormelThe copolymers of the present invention are terpolymers of vinylidene fluoride, a second comonomer which is a halogenated olefin or a fluorinated ether, and a third comonomer which is a fluorinated ester. The second comonomer can be chlorinated or fluorinated 1,1,2-trifluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, perfluoro(methylvinyl)ether, perfluoro(ethylvinyl)ether, or perfluoro(propylvinyl)ether. The third comonomer is a perfluorovinyl ether derivative having ester groups. These comonomers function as cure sites and are selected from the group consisting of compounds having the formula

wobei R'f = (CF&sub2;)&sub3;COOR, (CF&sub2;)&sub5;COOR, (CF&sub2;)&sub3;OCF(CF&sub3;)COOR ist, und R = C&sub1;-C&sub6;- Alkyl, bevorzugt R = C&sub1;-Alkyl.where R'f = (CF₂)₃COOR, (CF₂)₅COOR, (CF₂)₃OCF(CF₃)COOR, and R = C₁-C₆-alkyl, preferably R = C₁-alkyl.
Besonders bevorzugte Beispiele derartiger Comonomere sindParticularly preferred examples of such comonomers are
CF&sub2;CFO(CF&sub2;)&sub3;COOCH&sub3;, CF&sub2;CFO(CF&sub2;)&sub5;COOCH&sub3; undCF2 CFO(CF2 )3 COOCH3 , CF2 CFO(CF2 )5 COOCH3 and

The numerical value of the average molecular weight of the polymers according to the invention is 2500-15000, preferably 3000-7000. Copolymers with numerical values of the average molecular weight above 15000 have viscosities that are too high for them to be used as sealants without solvents.
For example, a preferred process involves contacting vinylidene fluoride and the second and third comonomers described above in the presence of a peroxide initiator, such as bis(perfluoropolyoxyalkanoyl)peroxides having the structure
[C&sub2;F&sub5;(CF&sub2;OC(CF&sub3;)F)xCOO]&sub2;,[C2 F5 (CF2 OC(CF3 )F)xCOO]2 ,
Other peroxide initiators suitable for the preparation of the terpolymers include those peroxides of the general formula (RfCOO)₂, in which Rf is a perfluorochloroalkyl or a perfluorochlorocycloalkyl radical.
In order to obtain copolymers with improved resistance to aggressive media, for example gaseous fluorine, it is preferred to carry out the polymerization in the presence of a chain transfer agent with the formula RfBrx, where x = 1 or 2 and Rf is a perfluoroalkylated alkyl radical.
Preferably, the chain transfer agent is 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane. Generally, 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane is present in an amount such that the molar ratio of brominated tetrafluoroethane to monomers is (0.2-2.2):1.
The reaction can be carried out at pressures below 0.8 MPa with stirring. A reaction time of 4-6 hours is usually sufficient and yields of 70-90% can generally be achieved.
The bis(perfluoropolyoxaalkanoyl)peroxides suitable for use as initiators in the copolymerization reaction can be prepared by the process disclosed by A.S. Sibert and D. Swem in Analytical Chemistry, 30, No. 3,385(158). The process consists in reacting acid fluorides and hydrogen peroxide in CFC-113 in the presence of potassium hydroxide at -10°C.
The terpolymers contain ester units that act as cure sites. Polyamines can be used to crosslink the polymers at room temperature. Suitable polyamines include aliphatic and fatty acid-based di- and polyamines, such as xylylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine and diethylenetriamine. Generally, 3-8 parts of polyamine hardener per 100 parts of polymer are used. Curing takes place over a period of several hours at room temperature. For example, the terpolymers can be mixed with a polyamine hardener over a period of 5-20 minutes. The resulting mixture can then be placed in a mold that is pressurized, for example 10 MPa, for a period of about 18-24 hours. Longer periods of up to 170 hours at room temperature can be used to more fully develop a crosslinked network.
Cured polymers of the invention are suitable for use as components of coating or adhesive formulations. When used in such applications, the polymer compositions can be various conventional additives such as fillers, antioxidants, ozonation inhibitors, solvents, setting retarders, anti-corrosion additives, pigments and adhesive resins. In general, such additives are present in amounts of 1-150 parts per 100 parts of polymer, preferably in amounts of 5-50 parts per 100 parts of polymer. The pot life of the compositions when mixed with various additives is generally not less than 8 hours at room temperature. When the copolymer formulations are used as coatings, they can be applied by brush, spray or by dipping. Fluorinated alcohols, for example H(CF₂CF₂)nCH₂OH, where n = 1-4, can be used as setting retarders, particularly for liquid copolymers according to the invention, and serve to control the pot life and improve the physical properties. When such fluorinated alcohols are present, the lifetime in the reaction vessel can typically be extended by several orders of magnitude without a loss of tensile strength.

TABELLE I The copolymer products of Examples 1-7 can be cured by adding aliphatic or fatty acid-based aromatic di- and polyamines in an amount of 3-8 parts per hundred parts of polymer at room temperature. The copolymers of Examples 1-7 were each mixed with 4-7 parts by weight of the curing agent xylylenediamine (a mixture of the meta and para isomers in the ratio 75:25) at room temperature for a period of 3-5 minutes. In the case of the copolymers of Examples 2 and 4, 10 to 20 parts of ethyl acetate were additionally present. The compositions were then filled into a mold and held at room temperature for a period of 18 to 24 hours under a pressure of 10 MPa. The vulcanizates thus obtained were rubbery materials which reached maximum physico-mechanical properties after 120-170 hours at room temperature or during a short heating cycle. The results of physico-mechanical tests of the cured compositions are shown in Table 1. The copolymers of Examples 3-7 prepared in the presence of 1,2-dibromotetrafluoroethane exhibited increased resistance to gaseous fluorine as illustrated for the polymers of Examples 1 and 5 by the results of contacting for 120 hours at 20°C at a pressure of 0.05 MPa. Results are shown in Table II. TABLE I
