Description
Common applique works include one or more layers of material, the top layer of which is a thermoplastic material onto which a design is printed. Such applique works are generally bonded to a substrate, usually a garment, by heat and high frequency welding. Applique works are traditionally produced in sheet form, with the applique print image being repeated a dozen or more times on the sheet before the sheet is separated into individual applique works. One of the biggest problems associated with the use of thermoplastic material is its low elasticity when stretched. Although it attempts to return to its original state, such an attempt is usually not 100% successful, i.e. the material distorts after stretching, causing distortion of the printed design. When multiple colors are printed on the applique sheet, the thermoplastic material moves or stretches slightly with each individual color print. Consequently, it is impossible to print larger sheets with the colors over exactly the same registration across the entire sheet. Furthermore, traditionally, printing inks must be cured at 160ºC or higher. However, the melting point of thermoplastic material used in the manufacture of applique work is usually between 180ºC and 200ºC, while distortion occurs at 150ºC, causing the applique work to distort after printing.
Tuch, indem der Transferbogen angepresst wird.GB-A-2 243 332 describes a printing method which provides an ink image forming step and an ink image transfer step. During the ink image forming step, an ink image is formed on a hot melt type adhesive layer on a transfer sheet using a heat sensitive image transfer recording device. During the image retransfer step, the ink image and the hot melt adhesive layer are transferred to an image receiving member such as a cloth by pressing the transfer sheet.
The transfer element comprises a base or carrier on which are carried a release layer of thermoplastic material, an intermediate layer, a pattern or design superimposed on the base layer, a second base layer formed over the pattern or design, and a top layer of adhesive. The transfer is applied by raising its temperature to a level which causes the release layer to melt and the top layer to become tacky, whereby the top layer, design, carrier layers, and a portion of the release layer can be released from the base or carrier and transferred to the surface of the article. The temperatures of the release and top layers are controlled to reach a state where the adhesive effect of the release layer to the article surface exceeds the extent of adhesion of the top layer to the transfer part, so that the latter can be peeled off, leaving the transfer bonded to the article surface.
This invention aims at an improved application work and manufacturing method.
Dementsprechend vermittelt diese Erfindung eine Vorgangsweise der Herstellung einer Applikationsarbeit, bestehend aus Folgendem:Accordingly, this invention provides a method of manufacturing an applique work comprising:
Vermittlung eines Laminats, bestehend aus einer ersten Schicht von thermoplastischem Material und einer zweiten Schicht von Substratmaterial zum Tragen besagten thermoplastischen Materials während des Druckens;providing a laminate comprising a first layer of thermoplastic material and a second layer of substrate material for supporting said thermoplastic material during printing;
sowie Drucken eines spezifischen Designs auf die Außenseite besagter ersten Schicht;and printing a specific design on the outside of said first layer;
This is a printing process for the laminate in which no ink is used, i.e. no design is printed on the laminate.
The use of a "blind printing process" prepares and stabilizes the thermoplastic material layer. This results in less distortion of the design when the design is subsequently printed on the laminate and when two or more prints are made, there is a better registration of the printing inks in relation to each other.
This invention also provides an application work consisting of a laminate with:
A first layer consisting of a thermoplastic material; and a second layer of substrate material on which said thermoplastic material is carried during printing of a specific design on the first said layer.
Das Substrat enthält Polyester- und Polyamidfasern.The substrate contains polyester and polyamide fibers.
In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the substrate is a silicone material which, for practical reasons, has a nominal weight of 180 g/m². Alternatively or additionally, the substrate may be paper with a silicone coating or coating.
From a practical point of view, the thermoplastic material is PVC and the substrate provides a stable base for the PVC. Thus it limits the movement of the PVC under different ambient temperatures, different wetness conditions during printing and different humidity conditions. The substrate also allows the PVC to maintain its normal state during the curing of the printing inks at temperatures above 150ºC when it would normally begin to distort. Thus it provides a stable base for printing inks to be cured at temperatures in the range 150ºC to 200ºC and preferably between 165ºC and 185ºC.
In an example of application work according to this invention, a layer of thermoplastic material 0.2 mm thick is supported on a 0.2 mm thick substrate and coated with an adhesive layer to which flock fibre is adhered. The flock fibre has a fibre content distributed at a rate of 100 g per m² as opposed to the normal rate of 80 g per m². The fibres are also cut to a length of 0.5 mm while the fibre has a nominal weight of 1.7 g/b km fibre (1.7 Desitex).
The substrate has the following limits, which are average production values:
It is advantageous to have a thickness of 0.125 mm for the adhesive layer in order to bring the root of each fiber into contact with the thermoplastic layer, leaving 0.375 mm of the length of each fiber free.
Die maximale Dicke der bedruckten Appukationsarbeit ist ungefähr 1 mm, vorzugsweise 0,9 mm.The maximum thickness of the printed applique work is approximately 1 mm, preferably 0.9 mm.
Controlling the flock fibre allows for a more accurate printing process as the improved density and uniformity of the height of the flock fibres more closely resembles a flat surface. The "blind printing" process also has the effect of removing single fibres, i.e. extra long fibres that protrude from the finished flock fibre surface.
During printing, the improved density and pressure equalization resulting from the uniform height of the fibers reduces the surface movement of the fibers when the weight and pressure of a printing screen is applied to the flock surface. The surface is more similar to a flat, consistent surface and produces a clear impression.
The ink used to print the design onto the thermoplastic material is a water-soluble ink containing a thickener (normally Sericol ZE596) and a flock transfer catalyst (normally Sericol FT386), preferably in a ratio of 5 and 6% by weight. The thickener also allows the application of printing ink directly onto the flock fiber itself without causing "bleed-through", i.e. without ink bleeding beyond the printing area. The use of a catalyst and a thickener improves the viscosity of the printing ink, which leads to improved application and lower transparency. They also lead to a reduction in the curing temperature of the printing ink and better adhesion between the printing ink and the flock fiber.
The ink curing process is carried out for two to three minutes using a dryer, such as a gas dryer, operating at a constant temperature of 165ºC to 185ºC.
Printing can be done with resolutions up to 11.8 dots per mm.
Each ink is dried for between one and three hours at room temperature after curing to prevent any unnecessary movement of the thermoplastic material layer. After the final print, the application work is dried at room temperature overnight. Alternatively, drying can be done at a suitable temperature above room temperature, such as up to 40ºC, in an oven dryer.
The elongation percentage of the finished product (substrate, PVC and flock fiber) is subsequently compared with the substrate itself and with the PVC and flock fiber layer without substrate carrier.
Finally, during welding of the applique work of this invention to a garment, an impermeable acetate film can be inserted between the applique work and the garment to prevent migration of printing ink between the two.
