Description
The invention relates to a method for joining materials, applicable both to joining hard materials, in particular light metal alloys, and to joining soft or fragile materials, in particular synthetic laminated, fiber-reinforced materials (often called "composite materials"). The invention also relates to a riveting device for carrying out the said method.
Riveting devices are known which are essentially composed of two parts: a mandrel comprising a shank and a head, and a sleeve designed to receive the shank of the mandrel in order to be deformed with its head in order to form a post-formed fastening head on one side of the materials. Reference is made, for example, to FR 2 306 361 which describes a riveting device of this type. However, the known devices of this type are not suitable for soft or fragile materials: during riveting, the sleeve undergoes a significant radial expansion at its end (in order to form the post-formed head), which is likely to cause significant damage to this type of material in the area under said post-formed head, with the risk of delamination and detachment of fibres. Whatever the nature of the materials being joined, the fastening support created by the post-formed head is essentially longitudinal and is of the type reduced dimensions that the holding force of the fastening is only moderate.
Furthermore, EP-A-0 216 405 describes, with reference to Figures 7 to 10 thereof, a blind riveting process, that is to say a riveting process in which access to the material to be riveted is carried out from one side only and which is completed by breaking the mandrel due to a corresponding tension exerted on it. This process avoids damaging the materials at the level of the reshaped head, but it is subject to blind processes (in particular those in which it is necessary to break off the mandrel shank at the end of riveting) and leads to a less resistant joint. This process also in no case allows radial compressive stresses to be introduced between the sleeve and the materials to be riveted without damaging the latter; in numerous applications, these compressive stresses have had the effect of increasing the fatigue behaviour of the joint.
The invention proposes to create a new riveting method that is applicable to any material without the risk of damage in the case of fragile materials, resulting in excellent fastening behavior (shear, tensile, fatigue behavior).
A further object of the invention is to provide a recessed connection in which a good flush fit and without the need to grind the riveting device.
Gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung besteht das Verfahren darin,For this purpose, the joining method according to the invention uses a riveting device comprising, on the one hand, a mandrel having a shank and a head, and, on the other hand, a sleeve for receiving the shank of the mandrel with a sleeve-shaped end that can be deformed by the head of the mandrel to create a post-formed head on one side of the materials to be joined. According to the present invention, the method consists in
in den miteinander zu verbindenden Materialien eine Bohrung einzubringen, mit einem Senkloch auf mindestens einer Seite der genannten Materialien,to drill a hole in the materials to be joined, with a countersunk hole on at least one side of the said materials,
eine Hülse zu verwenden, deren hülsenförmiges Ende an ihrer äußeren Oberfläche mit einer peripheren Einbuchtung versehen ist, welche eine durch eine Anlegezone auf das freie Ende der Hülse zu verlängernde Biegezone bildet, wobei die genannte periphere Einbuchtung entlang der Hülse derart angeordnet ist, das sie den Ursprung des Senkloches dann freigibt, wenn die Hülse in die genannte Bohrung eingeführt ist, einen Dorn zu verwenden, dessen Kopf mit einer Unterfläche versehen ist, deren Durchmesser in Richtung des Schaftes abnimmt, und der in der Lage ist, das hülsenförmige Ende der Hülse zu verformen und im Bereich ihrer Biegezone umzubördeln;to use a sleeve whose sleeve-shaped end is provided on its outer surface with a peripheral indentation which forms a bending zone which can be extended to the free end of the sleeve by a contact zone, said peripheral indentation being arranged along the sleeve in such a way that it exposes the origin of the countersunk hole when the sleeve is inserted into said bore, to use a mandrel whose head is provided with a lower surface whose diameter decreases in the direction of the shaft and which is able to deform the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve and to flange it in the region of its bending zone;
die Hülse derart in die Bohrung einzuführen, daß ihr hülsenförmiges Ende, das zum peripheren Umbördeln vorgesehen ist, sich auf der Seite des Senkloches befindet, wobei sich die Biegezone zu beiden Seiten des Ursprunges des genannten Senkloches erstreckt, und wobei die genannte Hülse für sich alleine in Abwesenheit des Dornes in die Bohrung eingeführt wird; die Hülse in der Bohrung mittels eines Hohlkolbens zu halten, der sich auf der dem Senkloch gegenüberliegenden Seite gegen die Hülse abstützt; worauf der Dorn auf derjenigen Seite der Materialien, auf der sich das Senkloch befindet, herangeführt wird, und zwar fluchtend mit dem hülsenförmigen Ende der zum peripheren Umbördeln vorgesehenen Hülse;to insert the sleeve into the bore in such a way that its sleeve-shaped end, which is intended for peripheral flanging, is on the side of the countersunk hole the bending zone extending on either side of the origin of said countersunk hole, and said sleeve being introduced into the hole by itself in the absence of the mandrel; holding the sleeve in the hole by means of a hollow piston which bears against the sleeve on the side opposite the countersunk hole; whereupon the mandrel is introduced on the side of the materials on which the countersunk hole is located, in alignment with the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve intended for peripheral flanging;
den Dorn am hülsenförmigen Ende der Hülse in diese einzuführen;insert the mandrel at the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve into it;
auf den Kopf des Dornes mit Hilfe eines Niethammers einen Druck auszuüben, um zu bewirken, daß der Kopf das hülsenförmige Ende der Hülse verformt, wobei die Unterfläche des Kopfes ein zentrifugales Umbördeln des Endes der Hülse gewährleistet, so daß die Anlegefläche der Hülse mit dem Inhalt des Senkloches befindlichen Materialien in Kontakt gebracht wird;applying pressure to the head of the mandrel using a riveting hammer to cause the head to deform the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve, the undersurface of the head ensuring centrifugal crimping of the end of the sleeve so that the contact surface of the sleeve is brought into contact with the materials contained in the countersunk hole;
In this way, during riveting, the peripheral beading protects the beginning of the countersunk hole from any stress and the fastening head is formed by beading the sleeve in the area of its beading zone (and not by expansion, as is the case with the device described in patent FR 2 306 361). This avoids damaging the materials under the reshaped head and allows a large-sized support to be made which adheres perfectly to the materials. The so-called flanging is advantageously carried out by means of a circumferential indentation around the sleeve. It can also consist of a shoulder.
The length of the sleeve can be adjusted so that its free end, after flanging, is essentially flush with the outer edge of the countersunk hole. In this way, a good flush is obtained on the side of the reshaped head without having to carry out any reworking (this process is very dangerous due to the fragility of the connection).
The method according to the invention can be used in particular to obtain a countersunk joint. A sleeve is therefore used which has a preformed head which, when riveted, fits into a corresponding countersunk hole provided in the materials (as opposed to the countersunk hole provided for the post-formed head). On the side of the preformed head, a good flush can be achieved without any finishing work by providing a mandrel which projects beyond the preformed head and by causing this projecting part, when compressed, to flow and spread out in the cavity of said preformed head, which can be provided with a small countersunk hole for this purpose.
In order to increase the fatigue behaviour of the joint, the method according to the invention can be carried out using a mandrel whose shaft has an outer diameter which is larger than the bore of the Sleeve is designed to achieve expansion of the sleeve when the mandrel is inserted and to create radial pressure between the sleeve and the materials to be joined. Such expansion creates radial compressive stresses between the sleeve and the materials, which considerably improve the fatigue behavior of the joint. In the case of conductive materials, such expansion also increases the passage of electrical current. Note that the sleeve used preferably has an external diameter substantially equal to the bore: expansion is thus achieved solely when the mandrel is inserted, without the risk of milling at the sleeve-material interface. In the case of light alloy materials, the mandrel is best designed to achieve expansion of between 0.1 mm and 0.4 mm; in the case of composite materials, the amount of expansion is reduced and limited to between 0.05 mm and 0.2 mm, in order to exclude the risk of delamination.
The invention relates to a riveting device which allows the method described above to be carried out. This device comprises, on the one hand, a mandrel with a shank and a head, and, on the other hand, a sleeve for receiving the shank of the mandrel with a sleeve-shaped end which is suitable for being deformed by the head of the mandrel, the sleeve having a sleeve-shaped end which is provided on its outer surface with a recess which forms an extended flanging zone against the free end by means of a bearing zone, and the mandrel having a head which has a lower surface with a diameter which decreases towards the shank in order to to deform the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve and to flange it at the level of the flanging zone, whereby the outer diameter of the mandrel is adapted in such a way that it exceeds the bore diameter of the sleeve by a value of between 0.05 mm and 0.3 mm.
Further features, objects and advantages will become apparent from the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate, by way of example and not limitation, an embodiment of a riveting device according to the invention and a joining method. The drawings, which form an integral part of the description, show the following:
Figures 1 and 2 are enlarged axial sections of a sleeve and a mandrel, respectively, which are components of the riveting device.
Figures 3 to 8 illustrate the process for joining materials using the said device.
Figure 9 is a section through a connection created in this way.
The riveting device shown by way of example in Figures 1 and 2 is made up of a sleeve 1 (Figure 1), which can be made in particular of titanium (T 40) in order to take advantage of the deformability of this material, and of a mandrel 2 (Figure 2), which can be made in particular of stainless steel (austenitic steel) in order to take advantage of the advantageous mechanical properties. In addition, these materials are Compatible with most materials to be joined (light metal alloys, composite materials,...).
The sleeve 1 comprises, on the one hand, a preformed countersunk head 3 of frustoconical shape and a cone angle α for example of the order of 1000, and, on the other hand, a cylindrical sleeve body 4 with an external diameter Dd, the end of which opposite the head 3 is provided with a circumferential indentation 5 in the form of a groove. The interior 6 of the sleeve is formed by a bore which is cylindrical in shape over most of its length (diameter Da), with a small countersunk hole 6a at the level of the head 3 and a conical section 6b at the opposite sleeve-shaped end. The cone angle β; of this cone is, for example, of the order of 150. This cone extends to the level of the indentation 5 to create a zone of reduced thickness Zm in the area of the beginning of the indentation, the thickness of the sleeve increasing from this zone to the center of the indentation. A flanged zone of the sleeve is thus created which extends from the zone Zm to the center of the indentation.
In the preferred embodiment shown, the base 5a of the recess is cylindrical, with its axis coinciding with the axis of the sleeve, and its flanks 5b and 5c are frustoconical, the flank 5b having a cone angle χ which is smaller (of the order of 40º) and which merges into a cylindrical surface 7 located at the end of the sleeve. This conical flank 5b and its cylindrical extension 7 form a cylindrical contact surface which is intended to come into partial or total contact with the materials to be joined during riveting. The cylindrical contact surface 7 and the frustoconical surface 6b are connected to the outermost narrow side 4a of the sleeve via rounded parts.
Mandrel 2, which is intended to penetrate into the sleeve 1 during riveting, has a solid cylindrical shaft 8 with a diameter Dm and a head 9, which has a lower surface 9a and a short cylindrical strip 9b.
The diameter Dm of the shaft 8 is larger than the bore Da of the sleeve 1 in order to widen it during riveting. The difference between these diameters depends on the application and is between 0.1 mm and 0.4 mm when joining materials made of aluminum alloys, and between 0.05 mm and 0.2 mm when joining composite materials.
The lower surface 9a is of a truncated cone shape with a cone angle δ, for example of the order of 135º. It is connected to the shaft via a curve 9b, which ensures progressive flanging of the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve during riveting.
The length of the mandrel shaft is chosen such that the mandrel passes the beginning of the countersunk hole 6a at the end of the insertion; this length of overshoot is small enough for the material to creep into this hole. Countersunk hole in the sleeve when flanging. In the example shown, an overhang length of the order of 0.5 to 1.0 mm produces good results and allows good flushness to be achieved on the side of the preformed head.
Figures 3 to 8 illustrate the method for joining materials using the riveting device described above.
These materials can, for example, consist of sheets 10 and 11 made of synthetic laminated, fiber-reinforced material (Figure 3). These sheets are held in the usual way by means of clamping jaws 12 and are provided with a cylindrical bore 13 with countersinking on both sides in order to create two identical countersunk holes 14 and 15, the cone angle η of which is, for example, in the order of 100º. The bore Dt corresponds to the external diameter Dd of the sleeve 1 (play less than 0.05 mm).
A sleeve 1 is used with a length that is greater than the thickness of the materials to be joined, deflected in such a way that the sleeve-shaped end of the sleeve exceeds the materials by a length of the order of 0.5 to 1.25 mm, such that the free end of the sleeve at the end of the flanging is substantially flush with that of the outer edge of the countersunk hole 15.
The sleeve 1 is inserted into the hole of the materials until its preformed head 3 is in the corresponding countersunk hole 14 of the hole (Figure 4) the indentation 5 The sleeve is designed such that in this position it extends on both sides of the beginning of the countersunk hole 15.
Sleeve 1 is now held in this position by means of a hollow piston 16 which rests against the front surface of the preformed head, as shown in Figure 4.
The mandrel is then placed on the side opposite the preformed head of the sleeve and inserted into it (Figure 5). In the case of composite materials, the mandrel chosen has a shaft that causes a slight expansion of the sleeve (between 0.05 mm and 0.2 mm).
The mandrel is pressed into the sleeve by means of a riveting hammer 17 (solid piston). This penetration ensures the expansion of the sleeve and the appearance of compressive stresses on the internal surface between the sleeve and the composite materials. Note that these compressive stresses are purely radial and do not cause any damage to the materials due to the extent of the expansion mentioned. At the end of the penetration, the head of the mandrel comes into contact with the sleeve and deforms its sleeve-shaped end: the lower surface 9a of the head causes a centrifugal crimping of this end; the crimping weakens in the zone of lesser thickness, defined by the indentation 5, and extends progressively along the indentation. Figure 6 illustrates the progressive crimping of the sleeve. Note that the composite materials are not stressed during this crimping, especially at the level of the countersunk hole. 15 and its beginning which remain without contact with the sleeve.
The mandrel is driven into the sleeve until its contact surface comes into contact with the materials to be joined inside the countersunk hole 15 (see Figure 7). In the case of composite materials, the flanging is carried out in such a way that a moderate pressure is exerted between the sleeve and the materials in order not to damage the latter. In this case, only the cylindrical contact surface 7 comes into contact with the materials. In the case of metallic materials, in particular light metal alloys, the pressure can be higher, with part or all of the frustoconical contact surface 5b (flank of the recess 5) coming into contact with the materials to be joined.
The mandrel is then driven into the sleeve by means of a driver 18, which presses the protruding part of the shaft of the mandrel wide and causes its material to creep into the small countersunk hole 6a of the sleeve (Figure 8).
The method according to the invention results in a joint as illustrated in Figure 9, with the advantage of a good flushness of the two sides without the need for grinding operations. This joint has excellent mechanical properties due to the presence of the pressurized stainless steel mandrel inside the sleeve (superior shear behaviour of 30 to 60 percent with respect to that of solid rivets made of Light metal alloys, tensile and stress behavior of about 10 to 15 percent, excellent fatigue properties). Micrographic examinations of joint sections have confirmed that the sheets of composite material were not damaged by riveting.
