- Heat Sensitive Colour Forming Recording (AREA)
Description
This invention relates to the improvement of color toning of a heat-sensitive recording material having excellent image storage stability.
Generally, a heat-sensitive recording material comprises a support and a heat-sensitive recording layer provided thereon which is mainly composed of an electron-donating colorless dye precursor and an electron-accepting color developer, and when this is heated by a thermal head, thermal pen, laser beam and the like, the colorless dye precursor and the color developer react instantaneously to form a recorded image. This is disclosed in Japanese Patent Kokoku Nos. 43-4160 and 45-14039. Such heat-sensitive recording materials have advantages that recording can be carried out by relatively simple devices, maintenance is easy and no noise is generated, and they are used in various fields such as recorders for measuring, facsimiles, printers, terminals for computers, label and ticket vending machines, etc.
Such heat-sensitive recording materials using an electron-donating colorless dye precursor and an electron-accepting color developer have various excellent properties that they have a good appearance and feel and give a high color density and various color tones, but they have problems that when the colored area (recorded image area) comes into contact with plastic articles such as polyvinyl chloride, the area disappears due to the plasticizer or additives contained in the plastic, or when the area chemicals contained in food or cosmetics, it easily disappears or the area is easily discolored when exposed to light for a short period, that is, they are inferior in storage stability of the record. Due to these problems, they are limited in application and improvements are needed in this regard.
As heat-sensitive recording materials that can give recorded images with high storage stability by the reaction of two components by heating, Japanese Patent Kokai Nos. 58-54085, 58-104959, 58-149388, 59-115887 and 59-115888 and U.S. Patent 4,521,793 disclose heat-sensitive recording materials using imino compounds and isocyanate compounds as the two components. These heat-sensitive recording materials are superior in storage stability, but are inferior in heat responsiveness and cannot give a recorded image with a sufficient density by a high-speed printing machine. Furthermore, the resulting image has only a hue of sepia color.
As an approach to improving the heat responsiveness, the inventors in Japanese Patent Kokai No. 60-262686 have disclosed a heat-sensitive recording material comprising three components of an imino compound, isocyanate compound and fluorane compound having blue color. This material has excellent storage stability of the recorded image and heat responsiveness, but it is insufficient in toning effect and cannot form an image having an almost black color. This further has a disadvantage that the non-colored area (background) easily forms a fog.
The above heat-sensitive recording material disclosed by the inventors is superior to conventional heat-sensitive recording materials in terms of image storage stability and heat responsiveness, but it has problems that the stability of the non-colored portion is inferior (fogging in the background) and that the color tone of the image is not a black tone.
As a result of the inventors' intensive research conducted to solve these problems, it was found that the heat-sensitive recording material can be obtained when a fluoran compound represented by the formula:
Diese Erfindung basiert auf dieser Feststellung.(wherein R₁ and R₂ are each a hydrogen atom and a lower alkyl group, a cyclohexyl group or an allyl group, and R₃ is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a cyclohexyl group or an allyl group, and wherein R₄ and R₅ are each a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a phenyl group, a cyclohexyl group or an aralkyl group, wherein 3-N-ethyl-N-(p-methyl-phenyl)-amino-7-(N'-methyl-N'-phenylamino)-fluoran, 3-pyrrolidyl-7-cyclohexylaminofluoran and 3-N-ethyl-Np-methylphenylamino-7-anilinofluoran are also included) is contained in a heat-sensitive recording material comprising an aromatic isocyanate compound and an imino compound having at least one >C=NH group represented by the formula =NH (wherein means an aromatic compound residue which is reacted with the adjacent C=N can form a conjugated system), wherein the imino compound reacts with the isocyanate compound by heat to form a color. This invention is based on this finding.
Fluoran compounds are widely used as colorless dye precursors, but it has been found that the fluoran compound represented by the above formula is particularly effective for color toning. Particularly effective compounds are those represented by the above formula, wherein R₁ and R₂ each represent a lower alkyl group, R₃ is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, and R₄ and R₅ each represent an aralkyl group.
Die Fluoranverbindungen, die erfindungsgemäß verwendet werden, sind grüne Fluoranverbindungen, und als Beispiele davon können 3-Diethylamino-5-methyl-7-dibenzylaminofluoran, 3-Diethylamino- 7-dibenzylaminofluoran, 3-N-Ethyl-N-cyclohexylamino-7- anilinofluoran, 3-N-Ethyl-N-(p-methylphenyl)amino-7-(N'-methyl- N'-phenylamino)fluoran, 3-Pyrrolidyl-7-cyclohexylaminofluoran, 3-Diethylamino-7-anilinofluoran, 3-N-Ethyl-N-p- methylphenylamino-7-anilinofluoran, 3-Diethylamino-7-p- cyclohexylanilinofluoran, 3-Diethylamino-7-(N-cyclohexyl-N- benzylamino)fluoran und 3-Cyclohexylamino-7-(N-methyl-N-p- methylphenylamino)fluoran erwähnt werden.The fluoran compounds used in the present invention are green fluoran compounds, and as examples thereof, there can be mentioned 3-diethylamino-5-methyl-7-dibenzylaminofluoran, 3-diethylamino- 7-dibenzylaminofluoran, 3-N-ethyl-N-cyclohexylamino-7- anilinofluoran, 3-N-ethyl-N-(p-methylphenyl)amino-7-(N'-methyl- N'-phenylamino)fluoran, 3-pyrrolidyl-7-cyclohexylaminofluoran, 3-diethylamino-7-anilinofluoran, 3-N-ethyl-N-p- methylphenylamino-7-anilinofluoran, 3-diethylamino-7-p- cyclohexylanilinofluoran, 3-diethylamino-7-(N-cyclohexyl-N-benzylamino)fluoran and 3-Cyclohexylamino-7-(N-methyl-N-p- methylphenylamino)fluoran should be mentioned.
When blue fluoran compounds such as 3-dibutylamino-6-methoxy-7-anilinofluoran, 3-dimethylamino-6-ethoxy-7-anilinofluoran, 3-diethylamino-6-ethoxy-7-anilinofluoran and 3-dibutylamino-6-ethoxy-7-anilinofluoran are used instead of the fluoran compounds of the present invention, the storage stability of the background deteriorates (fogging) and, moreover, the color toning effect is not sufficient and a desired color tone cannot be obtained. Furthermore, when fluoran compounds having a black color such as 3-N- Ethyl-N-isopentylamino-6-methyl-7-anilinofluoran, 3-(N-methyl- N-cyclohexylamino)-6-methyl-7-anilinofluoran, 3-diethylamino-7- n-trifluoromethylanilinofluoran and 3-diethylamino-6-methyl-7-anilinofluoran are used, the background fogging can be improved, but the color toning effect is not sufficient.
Usually, in the present invention, the fluoran compound is added in an amount of at least 0.5 wt.%, preferably 1 to 100 wt.%, particularly preferably 3 to 50 wt.% of the imino compound. If the addition amount is less than 0.5 wt.%, the color toning effect is not sufficient, and if it is more than 100 wt.%, it may be economically disadvantageous.

The heat-sensitive recording material of the present invention comprises a support and provided thereon a heat-sensitive recording layer which forms a color when heated, as mentioned above. As the support, paper is mainly used, but nonwoven fabrics, synthetic resin films, laminated papers, synthetic papers, metal foils and composite sheets including combinations of these can be used depending on the use. The heat-sensitive recording layer may comprise a single layer or a plurality of layers having a multilayer structure. In the multilayer structure, an intermediate layer may be provided between layers. Furthermore, a protective layer may be provided on the heat-sensitive recording layer. This recording layer can be formed by coating a mixture of an aqueous dispersion of each color-forming component, which is finely powdered, and a binder, on a support and drying the coating. In this case, each color-forming component can be contained in one layer, and thus the multilayer structure can be formed.
