When the retraction valve 25 is opened, the passage 32 communicates with the piston chamber 15 through the opening 33, through the passage 25a of the retraction valve 25, the passage 35, the bore 27a of the spring holder 27 and through the bore 23a of the retraction valve 23. In addition, the piston 3 is provided at its upper part with two control grooves 3a.

At the lower end of the pump housing 1a there is a servo cylinder 51 with a freely movable servo piston 52. The upper end of the servo piston 52 abuts the piston guide 7 of the piston 3. A piston chamber 53 contains a servo cylinder 51, a cover 54 at the lower end of the servo cylinder 51 and a servo piston 52.
The piston chamber 53 of the fuel injection pump 1 arranged in this way is connected either to the line that connects the fuel tank 61 via the pump 63 and filter 62, or to the line that creates a direct connection to the fuel tank 61 when the directional control valve is in operation. Furthermore, a pressure accumulator 64 is located on the main line between the directional control valve 65 and the fuel pump 63.
The operation of the present invention is described below.
In the fuel injection system shown in Fig. 1a, the piston chamber is directly connected to the fuel tank 61. Accordingly, the servo piston 52 is in its lowest position due to the pressure of the spring 8. The piston 3 is also in the lowest position, as can be seen in Fig. 1b.
Even in this position, the oil is supplied to the accumulator 64 by pump 63 and thus collected in the accumulator 64. The suction chamber 17 is also supplied with fuel from a pump P (not shown) via fuel inlet 12 through the fuel chamber 14 and the outlet opening 16. Excess fuel is returned to the fuel tank T (not shown).
If the directional valve 65 is activated in Fig. 1(a), a liquid under increased pressure is pumped from the pressure accumulator 64 into the piston chamber 53. This liquid under high pressure serves to move the servo piston 52 up and down. The servo piston 52 moves the piston 3 up and down via the piston guide 7 - as shown in Fig. 1b. When the piston 3 moves up and down, the diesel oil in the piston chamber 15 is put under excess pressure. This pressurized Fuel moves the return valve 21 upward against the pressure of the spring 22, causing the shutter 21a to move upward from the seat 31 and the valve to open. Thus, the fuel is injected from the injector into the cylinder via an injection line (not shown). At this moment, the return valve 25 and the inlet valve 23 close the seats 19 and 34 under internal pressure, see Fig. 1(c). When the fuel is injected in the desired amount, the piston 3 stops its up and down movement, causing the pressure in the piston chamber to drop abruptly, thus causing the spring 22 to push the outlet valve 21 downward to open the valve 21. Consequently, since the fuel in the line is reduced at this moment by the amount ΔQ = π/4 d² l, the pressure in the injection line is abruptly reduced to a level similar to a pressure at which the injector valve is closed. Since the wave of pressure in the line, which has a higher amplitude than that required to open the valve, returns to passage 32, the wave force is conducted through orifice 33 to the check valve 25 to push it down and open seat 34, sucking the fuel back into the injection pump via oil passage 35. Then the pressure in the injection line can gradually fall below a level at which the injector is opened and the check valve 25 is closed. The injector cannot reopen, that is, it is possible to avoid the occurrence of secondary fuel injection, so that the injection cycle can be completed. The bore of the orifice 33 has an optimized size so that no negative pressure is generated in the injection line and the cavitation problem can be avoided. After the injection cycle is completed, the piston 3 is controlled to move downwards. Since the pressure existing in the piston chamber 15 can be reduced below the pressure prevailing in the suction chamber, the inlet valve 23 is moved upwards against the pressure of the spring 24, thereby opening the seat 19 and thus allowing the supply of fuel from the suction chamber through the seat 19 into the piston chamber 15. The fuel supply stops when the piston 3 stops its downward movement. At this moment the spring 8 causes the piston 3 to move downwards to facilitate the fuel supply.
During the above-described working cycle, the connection between the piston chamber 15 and the outlet opening 11 is interrupted by the control grooves 3a. The discharge and supply of diesel oil for the piston chamber 15 does not take place via the outlet opening 11. Fig. 2 shows the relationship between the control grooves 3a and the outlet opening. The operation of these control grooves 3a together with the outlet opening 11 is described below with reference to Fig. 2. For modification the effective area of the control grooves, the positions of the control device 6 are changed and the piston 3 is rotated. The stroke of the piston during its up and down movements is represented by the distance S₁. If the stroke of the piston exceeds the distance S₁ and reaches an additional stroke ΔS₁, the piston chamber 15 establishes a connection with the outlet opening 11 via the suction opening 3b. If the piston 3 moves upwards, the pressurized diesel oil in the piston chamber 15 is guided via the outlet opening 11 into the fuel chamber 8. This reduces the pressure of the diesel oil so that the injection of fuel into the engine cylinder cannot take place. A maximum stroke in the control device position Rc₁ is therefore (S₁ + ΔS¹), where ΔS₁ represents a limit stroke, whereby the engine can be protected from overloading. Accordingly, S₂; and ΔS₂ represent a normal stroke and a limit stroke in the controller position Rc₂, respectively.
