Description
The present invention relates to a new method for preserving wood in its natural and processed forms.
It is recognized that there are a large number of wood preservatives available on the market which are applied in one form or another to provide protection against wood-destroying organisms. Nevertheless, almost half of all treated wood is treated with acidic copper, chromium and arsenic compounds, i.e. the C.C.A. preservatives. While C.C.A. provides excellent protection against rot and insect attack at a relatively low cost, its continued use is associated with a number of disadvantages.
A. treatments impart a green color to the wood, which is undesirable for many uses. This inorganic wood preservative does not provide protection against attack by molds and other wood-discoloring organisms. C.C.A. treated hardwoods are particularly susceptible to soft rot. When C.C.A. treated wood is burned, toxic gases can be released and the resulting ash can contain dangerously high levels of water-soluble arsenic. The E.P.A. has determined that pesticide products containing inorganic arsenic meet or exceed the limits for carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive or fetotoxicity for several mammalian species.
Ein Aspekt der vorliegenden Erfindung stellt eine zweistufige Methode zur Haltbarmachung von Holz dar, wobeiOne aspect of the present invention is a two-stage method for preserving wood, wherein
(a) in einer ersten Stufe das Holz unter Druck mit einer flüssigen Zusammensetzung in Kontakt gebracht wird, welche eine biozid wirksame Menge einer Kupferverbindung aus der Gruppe Kupferammoniumcarbonat, Kupfersulfat und einem Kupferethanolaminkomplex enthält, und(a) in a first step, the wood is brought into contact under pressure with a liquid composition containing a biocidally effective amount of a copper compound from the group consisting of copper ammonium carbonate, copper sulphate and a copper ethanolamine complex, and
(b) einer weiteren unabhängigen Stufe das Holz unter Druck mit einer flüssigen Zusammensetzung in Kontakt gebracht wird, die Natriumdithiocarbamat in Konzentrationen mit biozider Wirkung enthält.(b) in a further independent step, the wood is brought into contact under pressure with a liquid composition containing sodium dithiocarbamate in concentrations having a biocidal effect.
The copper compound can be dissolved in any suitable liquid, such as water or a hydrocarbon. The amount of copper compound used should be in excess of that required to completely react the dithiocarbamate to form a copper salt of the dithiocarbamate, e.g., copper dimethyldithiocarbamate. This amount can be easily determined by routine experimentation.
The dithiocarbamate can be dissolved in water, a chlorinated hydrocarbon or any liquid that facilitates the penetration of the dithiocarbamate into the wood.
The dithiocarbamate forms water-insoluble salts or chelates upon contact with the copper compound.
The order of application of the two steps can be reversed. Either the copper biocide or the dithiocarbamate biocide can be used in the first step. The decision as to which of the The choice of which of the two biocides is used in the first step may depend on the wood being treated, the equipment available, the solvent used, etc. Simple experiments can determine which of the two biocides is preferred in the first step. In some experiments we have found that it is advantageous to use the copper compound first because it penetrates deeper into the wood.
Our two-step process requires additional equipment, but this is more than compensated for by the ability to provide wood with attractive and weather-resistant properties that cannot be achieved with a single C.C.A. treatment. Brown tones of varying intensity can be achieved in a simple way. The addition of oil in the last treatment step combines the best properties of oil- and water-based wood preservatives.
The two treatment steps are both carried out using pressure. The retention of chemicals in the wood depends on many factors, including the concentration of the treatment solution, the treatment procedure and the condition of the wood before treatment. It is possible to dry the wood between the first and second treatments, but it is obvious to the skilled person that applying an "empty cell" treatment in the first step will achieve the same purpose.
Copper complexes of dithiocarbamate, which are formed as a result of the two-stage process, have a brownish color. The combination of copper with sodium dithiocarbamate gives a particularly pleasant brown color. If the color formation is of primary importance the dithiocarbamate compound is preferably used in the second process step.
The compositions and treatment steps of the present invention overcome many of the disadvantages of C.C.A. treatment without significantly increasing the cost of the treated wood. Using the present invention, the wood can be colored in pleasing brown tones, surface growth of fungi and soft rot bacteria can be prevented, and the need for the use of inorganic arsenic in the treatment can be avoided.
In addition to the copper compound and the dithiocarbamate, the wood treatment compositions according to the invention can also contain known wood treatment materials such as naphthenic acids, alkylammonium compounds, etc.
Fire retardant properties can be imparted to wood in a number of ways. Phosphates, borates and bromophenols can be included in certain of the copper biocides. These compounds can be administered alternately with the dithiocarbamate. Oils for water resistance and weather resistance can be emulsified in the dithiocarbamate solution. Copper biocides dissolved in heavy oils, used in the last treatment step, result in particularly good weather resistance of the wood.
In a first step, the trunk of a Yellow Southern Pine was treated with a 2.5% aqueous copper ammonium carbonate solution (8% EPA registration number 10465-3), and after this solution had been infused into the wood had penetrated, the wood was treated in a second step with a 0.33% aqueous sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate solution.
