Description
The present patent application is related to EP-A-0 436 623 (Agarwala) dated September 26, 1989, which is filed concurrently with this application. The entire disclosure of this parallel application is incorporated herein by reference.
The present invention relates to electrical energy converters using a superconducting element.
Electrical energy converters exploit the principles of electromechanical energy conversion to convert energy from mechanical to electrical form or vice versa. The energy conversion can be realized as translational or rotary motion or both. In the following discussion, the rotary motion generated by a rotary energy converter will be treated primarily as an example only, and it is assumed that the case of translational motion can be easily derived from the case of rotary motion. Rotary energy converters are well known and include synchronous, induction and direct current machines. Rotary energy converters can be used as a generator or motor under the appropriate conditions. The basic principles that explain the operation of these energy converters are essentially the same: voltages can be generated by the relative motion of a magnetic field with respect to a winding, and torques can be generated by an interaction between the magnetic fields of a stator and a rotor winding. For a general overview of these principles and relevant references, see, for example, "Electric Machinery" by Fitzgerald et al., published in 1971 by McGraw-Hill, Inc.
Although the basic principles have remained unchanged since the development of the first electrical energy converters in the last century, dramatic changes in materials and technology have been noted to develop more powerful, more efficient rotary energy converters.
For example, it is traditionally the case that DC machines use current-carrying conductors called armatures and mount them on a rotor; that a field winding circuit is mounted on a stator to create a magnetic field, thus providing a means of electro-mechanical energy conversion; and that various types of mechanical sliding contact arrangements for supplying current to the moving conductors, generally carbon brushes and commutators. However, this latter part, the mechanical sliding contact arrangement, can affect the operation of the DC machine. This is because the ability to transfer the required armature current across the brush contact on the commutator without sparking and without excessive local losses and heating of the brushes and commutator can be a limiting factor in the successful operation of the DC machine.
Verwiesen sei zum Beispiel auf "DC Motor- Speed Controls-Servo Systems, An Engineering Handbook" ("Gleichstrommotoren - Geschwindigkeitsregelung - Servosysteme, Ein technisches Handbuch") von Electro-Craft Corporation, Hopkins, Minnesota, herausgegeben 1980.An important response to this problem was the relatively recent development of the brushless DC machine, and in particular the brushless DC motor. This took advantage of the advent of semiconductor electronic components, so that the mechanical sliding contact arrangement can be replaced by semiconductor electronic sensors and switching devices. In line with this change, the armature winding in the brushless DC machine is also typically mounted on the stator. For example, see "DC Motor- Speed Controls-Servo Systems, An Engineering Handbook"("DC Motors - Speed Controls - Servo Systems, A Technical Handbook") by Electro-Craft Corporation, Hopkins, Minnesota, published in 1980.
This discussion of advances in DC machines is for illustrative purposes only, and it should be noted that significant recent advances have also been made in AC synchronous machines and induction machines. An electromagnetic suspension and positioning device is disclosed in US-A-3572854.
I have now discovered a new way of using superconducting materials and magnets to build a new type of electrical energy converter. The converter according to the invention can be used under the appropriate conditions as an AC synchronous motor or generator, as a brushless DC motor or generator, or as an induction motor or generator.
Der Energieumformer besteht ausThe energy converter consists of
a) einem Supraleiterlager;a) a superconductor bearing;
b) einem magnetischen Rotor, der so angeordnet werden kann, daß er schwebend gelagert ist, sich gegenüber dem Supraleiterlager bewegt und ein erstes Magnetfeld erzeugt; undb) a magnetic rotor which can be arranged so that it is suspended, moves relative to the superconductor bearing and generates a first magnetic field; and
c) einem Stator mit einer an eine Energie-Quelle/-Ableitvorrichtung anschließbaren Ankerwicklung zur Erzeugung eines zweiten Magnetfeldes zwischen Stator und Rotor, wobei sich das erste und zweite Magnetfeld gegenseitig so beeinflussen, daß ein elektromagnetischen Drehmoment erzeugt wird, welches der Drehung des Rotors entgegenwirkt, wenn der Energieumformer als Generator arbeitet, und in Drehrichtung wirkt, wenn der Energieumformer als Motor arbeitet.c) a stator with an armature winding that can be connected to an energy source/dissipation device to generate a second magnetic field between the stator and the rotor, whereby the first and second magnetic fields influence each other in such a way that an electromagnetic torque is generated that counteracts the rotation of the rotor when the energy converter operates as a generator and acts in the direction of rotation when the energy converter operates as a motor.
The energy converter described above is suitable for many applications and offers, compared to the known electrical energy converters exceptional advantages. This is the case for the following reasons. The invention makes use of the Meissner effect, ie an induced recoil force field or a displacement field is developed between the superconductor bearing and the magnetic rotor. This in turn can be used together with the changes in the magnetic field arising between the elements of the energy converter described above to produce an extremely stable floating bearing of the magnetic rotor relative to the superconductor bearing even at very high rotational speeds of the rotor, e.g. at rotational speeds of at least 300,000 rpm. In addition, the magnetic field generated between the superconductor bearing and the magnetic rotor contributes to the creation of an essentially frictionless energy converter, ie that a friction coefficient of approximately zero arises at the interface defined by the superconductor bearing and the magnetic rotor.
As summarized above, the magnetic rotor can be arranged so that it is suspended and moves relative to the superconductor bearing (or vice versa). The movement can be either translational or rotational, or both.
Preferred embodiments of the magnetic rotor include the use of a magnetic rotor with a correspondingly designed magnetic pole configuration. For example, in one embodiment of the invention, the magnetic rotor preferably has a configuration with n pole pairs, where n is at least two. The magnetic rotor preferably has the shape of a "pie-shaped" disk, where n "pie slices" can be defined as having alternating north-south magnetization. The magnetic rotor can again, for example, have the shape of a rectangle, with the columns in the rectangular magnetic rotor being alternately associated with the north-south magnetizations. In another example, the magnetic rotor can have the shape of a ring with concentric and alternating north-south magnetizations.
In operation, the energy converter can set a load in motion through the magnetic rotor. The movement of the rotor load can be understood by applying force or torque equations. For example, the energy converter can be considered as a mechanical rotation system and described as follows:
(1) Rotor/Last-Masse (Trägheitsmoment J).(1) Rotor/load mass (moment of inertia J).
(2) Auf Rotor/Last ausgeübtes Drehmoment (T), das durch ein sich veränderndes Magnetfeld induziert wird;(2) Torque (T) exerted on rotor/load induced by a changing magnetic field;
(3) Elastizität oder Steifigkeit K der Rotor/Last-Masse, die für das anliegende Drehmoment eine rückstellende Kraft (analog einer Feder) sein kann.(3) Elasticity or stiffness K of the rotor/load mass, which can be a restoring force (analogous to a spring) for the applied torque.
In general, the stiffness K of the energy converter occurs in the form of the movement of the magnetic rotor suspended on the superconductor bearing. The stiffness K can be determined by the material and the microstructure properties of the superconductor bearing as well as by the arrangement of the magnetic poles transferred to the magnetic rotor. In particular, there are theoretical considerations that the stiffness is related to the fact that the superconductor bearing does not simply repel the magnetic rotor (Meissner effect), but actually binds the magnetic field lines that have arisen in the superconductor due to the partial penetration of the magnetic flux, and thus holds the magnetic rotor relative to the superconductor bearing. This holding effect in turn corresponds to the stiffness of the energy converter.

Preferred features of the energy converter according to the invention are described below.
Das Supraleiterlager kann aus einem Supraleiter 1. Art oder einem Supraleiter 2. Art bestehen. The superconductor bearing can consist of a type 1 superconductor or a type 2 superconductor. In a type 1 superconductor, a direct magnetic transition can occur from the superconducting Meissner state to a normal state, which is characterized by a magnetization field Hc with a critical phase transition. The type 1 superconductor can completely displace an applied magnetic field from its interior as long as H is smaller than the critical field Hc. (This property is the Meissner effect). In contrast, when H > Hc, the type 1 superconductor loses all its superconducting properties. Consequently, in the present invention, the type 1 superconductor bearing is expediently kept below the critical field Hc. Type 1 superconductors are referred to as soft (in contrast to the hard type 2 superconductors), and these include all natural superconductors except vanadium and niobium.
In contrast to superconductors of the first type, there is no direct transition from the normal to the superconducting state in superconductors of the second type. A superconductor of the second type only exhibits the complete Meissner effect below a lower critical magnetization field Hc1. Between Hc1 and a higher critical magnetization field Hc2 (ie Hc1 < H < Hc2) defines a mixed state for the type 2 superconductor. This mixed state is an example of an inhomogeneous superconducting phase, and an external magnetic field can penetrate into the volume of the superconductor. Outside of Hc2, the type 2 superconductor no longer exhibits the characteristic superconducting properties.
As shown above, hard superconductors of the second type can be contrasted with soft superconductors of the first type. Superconductors of the second type include superconducting compounds and alloys, e.g. a superconducting ceramic with a 1-2-3-Y-BaCu oxide. The superconducting transition temperature of this material is close to 90 K and has an upper critical magnetization field Hc2 > > 100 K Oe.
In both type I and type II superconductors, the critical magnetization field (Hc for type I and Hcl for type II) for levitation is relatively low, typically less than a few hundred oersteds. Thus, in the present invention, the superconductor bearing preferably contains a type II superconductor because Hc2 can be significantly higher than Hc1. In addition, type II superconductors are preferred because it is believed that magnetic flux penetration and bonding within these superconductors induce lateral stability in the levitation phenomenon, properties which may be lacking in type I superconductors. In both type 1 and type 2 superconductors, magnetic flux penetration and bonding can be improved by the selective application of impurities, e.g. by adding silver or silver oxide impurities to type 2 Y-Ba-Cu oxide superconductors. Furthermore, magnetic flux penetration and bonding can be improved by structural and physical methods, e.g. by microgrooving and physical patterning on the superconductor at the macroscopic or microscopic level. Further details on superconductors in general can be found in the work of Duzer and Turner, Principles of Superconductive Devices and Circuits, Elsevier, New York, 1981, Chapters 6 and 8, and the work of Ashcroft and Mermein, Solid State Physics, Holt-Saunders, New York, 1976.
As just explained, the superconductor bearing is preferably made of a type II superconductor. A preferred type II superconductor bearing is a Y-Ba-Cu oxide known as the "1-2-3" phase. This composition is preferred because it has a high superconducting transition temperature TC; because it has a strong anisotropy of the magnetic and electrical properties; because it has a large upper critical field Hc2; and because it exhibits a significant Meissner effect and magnetic flux binding in both single crystals and sintered ceramics. The 1-2-3-Y-Ba-Cu oxide is an extreme superconductor of the second type and has a superconducting transition temperature of approx. 90 - 95 K. This high transition temperature has the advantage that the required ultra-low temperature cooling can easily be achieved with liquid nitrogen.
It should be noted that although the preferred superconductor bearing is a Y-Ba-Cu oxide, recent work with a Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu oxide system and a Ti-Ba-Ca-Cu oxide system suggests that these systems could be advantageously used in the near future. In the latter systems, superconducting phases can be realized at higher temperatures; however, the existing uncertainties, e.g. with regard to their reproducibility and insulation, indicate a preferred use of the "traditional" 1-2-3 Y-Ba-Cu oxide.
A preferred process for the preparation of superconducting powders from 1-2-3-Y-Ba-Cu oxide (as well as Bi- or Ti-containing Cu oxides) will now be discussed. Attention should also be drawn to the flow diagram shown in FIG. 1. For this purpose, a Y-, Ba- and Cu- Prepare a cation-containing aqueous solution in the required stoichiometric ratio (1:2:3) with a total metal ion concentration of approximately 1 M. Typically, this involves the use of either the metal chloride, the nitrate salts, or a mixture. The room temperature metal salt solution (pH 2-3) is added to a thoroughly stirred, buffered, cold (5-10 ºC) brine containing appropriate amounts of sodium or potassium hydroxide and carbonate to cause complete precipitation of the metal ions and maintain a pH of 10-11 after addition is complete. The precipitate is collected shortly thereafter, either by filtration or centrifugation, and washed thoroughly with distilled water to remove residual sodium/potassium and chloride/nitrate ions. Since the barium hydroxide/carbonate is partially soluble at neutral pH, the pH of the filtrate is monitored and washing is stopped at pH 10. The washed coprecipitate is dried in air at 80ºC, mechanically ground to a fine powder, and calcined in a stream of dry air or oxygen at 900-950ºC for six hours. The resulting black, friable solid is reground to form a black, moisture-sensitive powder. The powder is cold pressed (10,000 psig) into pellets which are sintered in oxygen at 950-1000ºC for 2-12 hours, annealed in oxygen at 400-500ºC for 6-12 hours, and then slowly cooled to room temperature in oxygen. The samples prepared by this process are all single phase and typically have an onset temperature of 90-95 K as determined by DC and AC magnetic sensitivity.
To achieve levitation forces with maximum Meissner effect, completely dense ceramic superconductor pieces are preferred. To achieve densities of more than 60-80% of the theoretical density achieved by firing cold-pressed samples (see above), hot-pressing processes are preferably used. For example, superconducting ceramics made of 1-2-3-Y-Ba-Cu oxide can be obtained by hot-pressing in the Following oxygen annealing, densities of over 90% can be achieved. The density can be further increased to greater than 99% of the theoretical density by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). It is also possible to improve the orientation of the ceramic grains during densification processing. To compensate for the loss of oxygen during HIP, longer oxygen annealing times are typically required.
Furthermore, and as summarized above, the energy converter according to the invention contains a magnetic rotor which can be arranged so that it is suspended and moves relative to the superconductor bearing. The magnetic rotor can be made of any permanent magnetic material or an electromagnet. The magnetic rotor preferably consists of a permanent magnet, in particular a "supermagnet" based on a rare earth or transition metal, although conventional ferrites or alnico magnets can also be used.
The preferred rare earth permanent magnet rotor has a high coercivity or high energy product of at least 5 MOe. Such a magnet can be produced by a sintering or melt spinning process. Preferred magnets having a Sm-Co composition can be produced by sintering, for example, while magnets made of a Nd-Fe-B alloy can be produced by sintering or melt spinning. Further details on these processes are contained in the works of M Sagawa et al., J. Appl. Phys., 55, p. 2083 (1984) and J.J. Croat, IEEE Trans. Magn. MAG-1, p. 1442 (1982). These references are referred to in the bibliography here.
The permanent magnet is magnetized in a desired magnetic pole configuration in accordance with a specific application design. For example, the magnetization of a single continuously magnetic rotor can be isotropic or anisotropic and, as shown above, a multi-faceted, have multipole patterns.
In a preferred embodiment, the magnetic rotor may have a three-part structure, namely (a) a first magnetic element having at least two pole pairs that is electromagnetically coupled to the stator winding; (b) an intermediate magnet that is in direct contact with and magnetically coupled to the first magnetic element; and (c) a second magnetic element that is (1) in direct physical contact with the intermediate magnet, (2) separated from the first magnetic element by the intermediate magnet, and (3) magnetically coupled to the superconductor bearing.
The second magnetic element preferably provides a rotationally symmetric magnetic field configuration when the rotor primarily rotates relative to the stator. In contrast, the second magnetic element preferably provides a translationally symmetric magnetic field configuration when the rotor primarily translates relative to the stator. If a discrete or discontinuous translational or rotational movement of the rotor is desired, the magnetic element preferably contains at least two pole pairs. With this construction, these discrete movements can occur in steps.
The magnetic rotor with the three-part structure is preferred for the following reasons. It is theoretically assumed that this structure minimizes any magnetic interference of one magnet with the other. At the same time, this structure maximizes the electromagnetic coupling of the first magnetic element with the stator winding, and independently the magnetic coupling of the second magnetic element with the superconductor bearing, thereby increasing the lateral stability and the desired rotational/translational freedom of the rotor suspended above the superconductor bearing.
As summarized above, the energy converter of the invention includes a stator, which in turn includes a stator winding that can be connected to an electrical energy source and thereby generates the second magnetic field. The preferred drive electronics for controlling the commutation of the windings are shown in Fig. 2. In particular, a permanent magnet rotor is present in Fig. 2. In other embodiments not shown, the magnetic rotor can be an electromagnet. Also shown in Fig. 2 are a plurality of rotor position sensors, which preferably include a Hall effect measuring system, although an electro-optical switching system or a high frequency sensor system can also be used. The rotor position sensors provide input signals to a logic circuit in a known manner and thus generate logic signals that can be used to control the commutation of the windings. The logic signals therefore act on a driver circuit and a commutation control stage with a transistor bridge circuit to change the polarity of a supply voltage applied to the stator windings. As a result, torque reversal is achieved, not by reversing the mains voltage as in a traditional motor, but by shifting the logic functions by 180º el.
According to the principles of the present invention, a brushless DC motor was constructed in the following manner.
Es wurde ein Supraleiterlager (s. Fig. 3A) entsprechend den obigen Erläuterungen hergestellt. A superconductor bearing (see Fig. 3A) was manufactured according to the above explanations. The superconductor bearing consisted of a superconducting ceramic high-temperature material of the second type Y Ba2 Cu3 O7. The superconductor transition temperature was in the vicinity of 90K, so that its superconductivity was maintained in liquid nitrogen (boiling point 77K). The superconductor bearing had a critical magnetization field Hc2 > 100 K Oe. The superconductor bearing had the shape of a disk with a diameter of about 29 mm and a thickness of 4.5 mm. It had a slight curvature with a depth of about 0.7 mm at the center. It was theoretically assumed that such a curved shape would enhance the lateral stability of a magnetic rotor mounted above the superconductor bearing and facing its concave surface.
A magnetic rotor with a three-part structure was made. It is shown in Fig. 3B. The first part of the rotor was an eight-pole pair annular permanent magnet. The magnet was made of a plastic-bonded Nd-Fe-B alloy and had the shape of an annular disk with an outer diameter of 20.5 mm, an inner diameter of 8.7 mm and a thickness of 1.27 mm. The magnet was magnetized to have eight pole pairs with alternating pole sectors, facing each other at an angle of about 45° at the center.
The second part of the rotor consisted of three buffer layers, each layer consisting of a soft, unalloyed steel with high permeability and high saturation magnetization. Each buffer layer had the shape of a disk with a diameter of 21 mm and a thickness of 0.10 mm.
The third part of the rotor consisted of a magnet with a north pole on one planar surface and a south pole on an opposite planar surface. This magnet was made of a plastic-bonded Nd-Fe-B alloy like the eight-pole magnet and had similar dimensions.
The magnetic rotor with this three-part structure was held together by mutual magnetic forces.
The stator shown in Fig. 3C (prior art) consisted of a stator winding of the type used in a model number U-1E from Sony Corp., Japan. The main component of this component was a set of three copper coils mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB). The PCB consisted of It also consisted of three Hall effect sensors, which were used to determine the polarity of the second magnetic field and thus controlled and switched the current supplied to the copper coils via a conventional H-bridge transistor circuit. The armature winding was connected to an external 9V battery.
A brushless DC machine 10 was built according to the embodiment. It is shown in Fig. 4. It consisted of a superconductor bearing 12 made of Y Ba2 Cu3 O7 and was immersed in a quartz Petri dish 14 with liquid nitrogen 16. A magnetic rotor 18 was suspended above the bearing 12. The rotor 18 consisted of an eight-pole pair permanent magnet 20, a buffer magnet 22 and a bipolar magnet 24 located opposite the bearing 12. The magnet 20, on the other hand, was located opposite a brushless stator 26 and 3 Hall effect sensors 28. A drive electronics 30 was electrically connected to the stator 26 and consisted of a 9V battery circuit and a conventional H-bridge transistor switch (not shown). A single facet mirror was attached to the rotor 18 to demonstrate the use of the energy converter 10 to deflect a laser beam 34 in a laser scanner at a rotational speed of 15,000 rpm. This produced a clear scanned line at the position of a photocell 36 without diffusion or flutter.
The brushless DC machine of the embodiment was modified to demonstrate its use as a brushless AC synchronous machine and as an induction machine. In the former case, the stator winding was connected to an AC power source, the Hall effect sensors were removed, and the machine functioned as a brushless AC synchronous motor. In the latter case, the stator winding was reconnected to an AC power source, eddy currents were created in the magnetic rotor, and the machine functioned as an induction motor.
