Description
This invention relates to electrical reluctance machines having a primary part having a primary core defining primary poles with pole faces, and a secondary part having secondary poles with pole faces, and a coil or set of coils.
The stator is described as having windings in the gaps between the stator poles. These are stated to follow the conventional pattern of magnetizing the poles in alternating opposite polarities.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows a known construction of a switched single-phase reluctance machine with salient poles which can be operated either as an electric motor or generator. However, the term motor is used in this description for the sake of simplicity, although it is to be understood that the invention is equally applicable to electric generators.
The switched reluctance motor of Figure 1 comprises a stator core 1 and a rotor 2, both formed with four salient poles 3 and 4 respectively. The stator core consists of several lateral metal laminations in a stack. Each salient stator pole 3 carries an excitation coil 5. The coils 5 are wound so as to create north (N) and south (S) poles alternately around the stator. As shown by the dashed lines 6, each sector of the joined laminations of the core 1 carries half of the magnetic flux generated in one of the connected adjacent stator poles.
In this type of engine, the slats are usually made of a Strip metal blank stamped. Since the general external shape of each lamella is circular, a considerable amount of material is left between the lamella stampings, which can only be discarded as metal scrap. Although this scrap can of course be recycled, it is of course desirable to use the strip with as little waste as possible.
In addition, each pole carries its own copper winding. This design requires a significant amount of copper, which increases both the weight and the cost of the motor.
The aim of the present invention is to provide an electrical machine that optimizes the use of the core material and the copper windings in order to reduce manufacturing costs.
The present invention is characterized in that the coil or each coil is connected to and/or arranged with respect to the primary poles so as to define groups of adjacent primary poles, the magnetic polarity of the pole piece faces in each group of primary poles being the same with respect to the coil(s) and the magnetic polarity of the pole piece faces of primary pole groups in adjacent groups being opposite, and that a region of the primary core between adjacent primary poles in a group is relatively radially thinner than that between adjacent groups of primary poles.
The terms primary and secondary are used to describe the relatively moving parts of the machine. The poles connected to the coil or coils could be the rotor or stator of the machine.
In this way, the magnetic flux through the core between the groups of stator poles is increased by an amount related to the number of stator poles in a group.
Also, the magnetic flux in the stator core between poles within a group is significantly reduced towards the center of the group. Therefore, this area of the stator core between the stator poles in a group is now less dependent on considerations of the amount of magnetic flux therein, as it no longer has to serve as a path for all the magnetic flux between different pole groups. Thus, the thickness of the stator core in this area can be reduced and even designed and shaped with less consideration of the magnetic flux therein. The main criterion that remains is to ensure sufficient mechanical strength of the stator core. However, a slight increase in the material thickness of the stator core between the different groups will probably be required due to the increased magnetic flux in this area.
Preferably, each group of adjacent stator poles is enclosed by a single coil. This reduces the amount of material, such as copper, required for the windings in a given machine.
Preferably, the thinner region of the stator core defines a flat outer surface of the core.
Preferably, the core consists of a number of laterally extending slats. In this case, if the flat outer sides are formed by the thinner regions of the core, the slats can be punched from a strip, so that less material is used in forming the slats and less waste material is left over from the punchings. In this last respect, if the thinner or flat regions are punched from a strip side by side in a row, it is possible to reduce the overall length of strip used and also leave less waste.
The invention also extends to a machine as described above which is connected so that it functions as a motor and the same machine which is connected so that it functions as a generator.
The present invention may be carried out in various ways, some of which are described below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig.2 einen Querschnitt durch einen erfindungsgemäß auf gebauten elektrischen Reluktanzmotor undFig.2 shows a cross section through an electric reluctance motor constructed according to the invention and
Fig.3 shows a cross section through another electric reluctance motor according to the invention.
Fig.2 shows a switched single-phase salient pole reluctance generator having a stator 10 in which a rotor 12 is mounted. A core 13 of the stator consists of a stack of lateral metal laminations which also define four angularly equidistant stator poles 14. A copper coil 16 is wound around each of the stator poles 14. The coils are energized simultaneously.
The rotor 12 comprises a ferromagnetic steel part which defines four equally spaced rotor poles 18.
It will be apparent that this switched reluctance motor design is in many respects similar to that shown in Fig.1. However, in the electric motor of Fig.2 each of the coils 16 is connected so that the stator pole sequence around the core 13 is north/north/south/south (NNSS). By reconnecting the coils 16 in this way the path of the magnetic flux is restricted to that in the rear region of the core 13 connecting adjacent different groups of pole pairs (NN and SS) as indicated by the dashed lines 20. Thus for a given excitation current in the windings, the amount of magnetic flux in this reduced path is doubled. Therefore, the substantially retundant connecting regions between the like poles have a very reduced lateral thickness. It follows that four of the lengths of the coil 16 extending axially in the stator 10 are retundant since they play no part in generating the magnetic flux in the path between the various pole pairs (NN and SS) used to turn the rotor 12.
Fig. 3 shows a modified double salient pole switched reluctance motor with a single phase winding for a stack of laminations which takes advantage of the above-mentioned sequence of stator pole orientations. In this embodiment, a stator core 22, again comprising a series of lateral metal laminations in a stack, defines four equiangularly spaced stator poles 24. Pairs of stator poles 24 are each connected by a relatively thick portion 26 of the core 22. Adjacent stator poles 24 in each similar pair are connected by a flat relatively thinner portion 28 of the core 22. Copper coils 30 in the core 22 are each wound in a loop to encompass one of the pairs of adjacent similar stator poles 24 connected by the corresponding thick portion 26.
As stated above, by changing the windings to excite the stator poles 24 in an NNSS sequence, there is no longer any magnetic flux in the sectors of the core 22 between similar poles 24. Thus, the thickness of the regions 28 is no longer dictated by the magnetic flux. Therefore, their shape and size are reduced to that required to maintain the overall mechanical strength of the core 22. This allows the thinner regions to be formed with flat outer edges. Under other conditions, the region 28 could be shaped to accommodate an adjacent component in a particularly confined space. In this case, the shape would be specially designed for the particular purpose.
However, because the amount of magnetic flux in the regions 26 is effectively doubled, it is necessary to increase their thickness above that required in an equivalent conventionally wound motor. However, overall, the absence of four coil sides and the need to conduct magnetic flux between poles of like polarity results in a considerable reduction in the dimensions of each lamina.
As mentioned above, the laminations for an electric motor are stamped from a metal strip. When this embodiment of the present invention is formed with flat sides due to the absence of magnetic flux in approximately half of the core, each lamination can be stamped with considerably less waste between it and an adjacent stamping than would be the case with conventional circular stamping. Thus, the amount and hence the cost of steel strip required for a given number of laminations is significantly reduced.
Designing each coil to include a pair of adjacent poles eliminates four coil lengths along the length of a conventional salient pole electric motor, with little or no reduction in performance. This results in a consequent reduction in the amount of copper required for the windings as a whole to about half that required along the length of the motor, in addition to a slightly increased amount at the end of each winding. Such an overall reduction in the amount of copper used in the windings results in both a reduction in winding resistance and a cheaper and lighter core.
Der Nutzen aus der Reduzierung der Kupfermenge und die verbesserte Wirkung nehmen mit Zunahme des Längen-/Breitenverhältnisses des Motors zu.The performance of the motor can be further improved by adjusting the proportions of the copper and iron core sections to accommodate the new winding strategy. If For example, if the two coils now used each have the same number of turns as each of the original four series coils in an equivalent known reluctance motor, the emf per coil will be doubled in the present embodiment since each coil now comprises two stator poles. Neglecting the end windings for the moment, the removal of the four extra coil sides will halve the resistance of the winding and hence the copper loss and the weight of the copper used. However, the amount of copper required for the end windings must be somewhat larger than in the previously known equivalent motor to encompass both poles. The benefit of reducing the amount of copper and the improved efficiency increase as the length/width ratio of the motor increases.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that Figs. 1 and 2 represent only two applications of the present invention which serve to illustrate the advantages of the new motor design. There are many possible variations in the detailed design of the motor fins according to the basic principles set out in Fig. 3. For example, pole arcs, air gap diameter with respect to overall dimensions, coil arrangements and the relative thickness of various parts of the fins can be changed in specific designs. However, all benefit from reduced copper content and a reduction in the amount of fin material required.
Furthermore, the invention could also be used for motors with an increased number of poles. For example, the invention could be used in an 8/8-pole motor, in which 2 coils comprise 4 poles or, alternatively, in which 4 coils each comprise 2 poles.
Although it is more common for the excited component to be the stator, it is of course possible for the rotor to be the excited component instead.
The invention can be used for switched reluctance motors as well as for some forms of stepper motors and synchronous reluctance motors which have salient poles on both the stator and the rotor. While the invention has been described in relation to a single phase motor, in which the number of rotor and stator poles is usually equal, the invention is equally applicable to combinations of rotor and stator poles in single and multi-phase applications, including, for example, multiple stacks of laminations incorporated in a single motor such as a stepper motor. In this case, many combinations of rotor and stator poles are possible.
In an alternative design, the thinner sections are omitted entirely. The remaining sections of the core that maintain the magnetic flux path are mounted in a support frame or housing that may or may not be part of the motor.
The single-phase machine described can be used both as a single part and as a stack of a multi-phase machine.
