Description
Process for the production of carbonyl cyanide The carbonyl cyanide (carbon oxycyanide) of the formula C O (C N) 2 had hitherto remained unknown. It has now been found that it can be obtained if the diisonitrosoacetone of the formula HON = CH-CO-CH = NOH is used. For this purpose the diisonitrosoacetone is used initially by the action of the usual acylating agents in a diacyl derivative of the general formula AC-ON = CH-CO-CH = N 0A C converted. This is what has been gained in this way Diacyl derivative subjected to thermal decomposition, which occurs in two consecutive Phases runs.
In the first phase of thermal decomposition, which is expedient under is carried out under greatly reduced pressure, takes place on heating to a suitable Temperature the cleavage of the diacyl derivative according to the equation AC-ON = CH-CO-CH = NOAc > - AcON = CH-CO-CN - AcOH. Acid is formed with the excretion of x molecules Ac O H the acyloximinoacetyl cyanide of the formula Ac O N = C H - C O - C N. This Cyanide is now subjected to the second phase of thermal decomposition, which is caused by Heating is brought about at a higher temperature than in the first phase and expediently takes place under a medium negative pressure. There is a In turn, one molecule of acid A c O H is split off, and the carbonyl cyanide is formed according to the equation ACON = CH-CO-CN> AcOH + CO (CN) ,. The carbonyl cyanide formed 'distilled out of the reaction mixture. It is made by careful cooling collected and obtained in a pure state by repeated distillation.
As acylating agent, for. B. Anhydrides of fatty acids, such as acetic acid and propionic anhydride can be used.
The process can be simplified if one looks at the isolation of the diacyl derivative is dispensed with by adding the excess after acylation of acylating agent used and the acid formed Ac O H under reduced Pressure is distilled off at the lowest possible temperature and immediately thereafter corresponding increase in temperature the first phase of thermal decomposition brings about. Another simplification is that you can do the two phases thermal decomposition are combined in one and the same operation by after the first cleavage reaction has ended, by increasing the pressure and temperature appropriately causes the second cleavage reaction without the intermediate in the reaction to isolate occurring acyloximinoacetyl cyanide.
Example Diisonitrosoaceton is in the water bath with a triple Amount by weight of acetic anhydride heated until it dissolves. Become out of the solution initially under 12 mm pressure and at a temperature of up to 80 ° the acetic acid formed and the excess acetic anhydride is distilled off, then the temperature is increased to ioo to iio °. After the cleavage reaction is over, the is formed Acetyloximinoacetylcyanid at i 2 mm pressure and i 3o to 14o` bath temperature from the Distilled out reaction mixture and collected in the receiving vessel. It is one solid colorless compound that melts at 90 °. Yield 6o to 65% of the theoretical, calculated on diisonitrosoacetone.
The cyanide obtained is used for further cleavage under Zoo to 220 mm pressure heated to 15o to 17o ° and the distillate collected with strong cooling. A mixture of carbonyl cyanide, acetic acid and hydrogen cyanide is obtained from which the pure carbonyl cyanide by repeated fractional distillation, first is obtained under reduced pressure, finally at atmospheric pressure. yield on pure carbonyl cyanide 3o. to 40% of the theoretical, on acetyloximinoacetyl cyanide calculated.
The carbonyl cyanide is an almost colorless liquid, which at 65 boils up to 66 ° below atmospheric pressure and has a specific weight of 1.124. Its smell is deafening and reminiscent of hydrogen cyanide.
The carbonyl cyanide is a very reactive compound that leads to various organic-synthetic purposes, in particular to introduce the C O C N radical, is suitable.
