Process for the production of potassium formate Processes are known for using potassium sulfate as a starting material for the production of potassium formate. These processes have gained some importance as ways of producing potassium carbonate (potash) and potassium oxalate, using potassium formate as an intermediate. The process for the production of potassium formate from potassium sulfate is based on the reaction equation: K.S04 + Ca (OH) 2 + 2CO = CaS04 + 2HCOOK. However, as more recent publications have shown, the formation of potassium formate does not proceed entirely in the sense of this equation, since the potassium sulphate partly forms multiple salts (syngenite or potassium sulphate-pentacalcium sulphate) with the gypsum that is formed. In order to avoid the formation of these salts or. To recover the potash from these compounds with the lowest possible losses, very special measures are required, as can be seen, for example, from the description of the process in French patent specification 733 985, which enable the economical production of Make potassium formate considerably more difficult. These measures consist in using either a significantly different ratio than the stoichiometric ratio of Ca (OH) 2 and K2 S 04 (in order to bring about a favorable shift in the ratio of calcium formate to potassium formate in the solution, which in fact causes the gypsum to approximate is obtained free of potash, but has the prerequisite that it is carried out in two process stages) or that it is carried out in a single pass, whereby temperatures and also higher carbon oxide pressures must be used by about zoo ° higher.
A process has now been found which also ensures the quantitative conversion of the potassium sulfate to potassium formate in one operation, but offers further technical advantages. These consist in selecting substances for the aids in the process in which the possibility of syngeneic-like compounds is excluded from the outset. This means that, in comparison to the lime process, it is possible to work without the use of higher pressures and higher temperatures and without a multi-stage operation, in particular without the various measures to avoid the formation of syngenite or to eliminate its consequences. Substances which satisfy these conditions are the oxydic compounds or compounds of barium which can be hydrolyzed with formation of hydroxides, namely Ba (OH) 2 or Ba S. The latter is combined with potassium sulfate, carbon dioxide and water according to the following equation; implemented: K2 S 04 -E- 2-CO + Ba S + 2H, 0 = BaS04 + aHCOOK + H, S their content of Ba S and Ba 0 corresponds to a total of 169.5 parts of Ba S. It is then allowed to act at an elevated temperature, expediently at 150 to 16o °, carbon oxide in the form of generator gas or gases with a higher carbon oxide content with stirring. The formation of formate proceeds extremely quickly and quantitatively (yield 97 ° 10 and more), with the release of hydrogen sulfide. The latter is drained from the autoclave from time to time using one of the known methods. After switching off the agitator, the resulting dense barium sulfate settles very quickly, whereupon the pure I 441 # 1 formate solution is removed from the autoclave '_ Any small excess of
formate can by adding the
th amount of potassium sulfate as potassium
föiniat can be made usable. The resulting barium sulfate is made into a paste with charcoal in a known manner, briquetted, reduced to sulfur barium and used again.
The procedure described can be changed so that mau
works with higher concentrations. The reaction runs smoothly even if
there is only a slight excess of water over the theoretical ratio.
