Process for the production of hydrogen cyanide It has been proposed
Methane with ammonia with formation of hydrocyanic acid and hydrogen using
of catalysts. The attempts to implement are under normal pressure
has been carried out, and it has been shown that this results in only very low yields
of not yet 10%, based on the ammonia used, of hydrocyanic acid in the end gas
can be obtained. There are also known works, methane with ammonia under
to transform the action of high voltage electrical discharges into hydrogen cyanide:
Attempts have also been made to combine ammonia with methane with the addition of oxygen
to implement at contacts to hydrocyanic acid. While in the first method the low ones
The yields mentioned in the second place are unsatisfactory
The great disadvantage of the process is that it has a high negative calorific value of the reaction
must supply electrically. The third method indicates besides the need
the use of catalysts, which is always difficult, for example
special. Cleaning devices, etc., is connected to the disadvantage that one
as a result of the action of oxygen, it is a completely worthless end gas in addition to hydrogen cyanide
receives.
solchen Menge,- däß auf je i Mol. Ammoniak i Atom Kohlenstoff der umzusetzenden
Überschusses an. Ammoniak zerstört wird.Attempts have been made to address the disadvantages of the conversion between hydrocarbons
and ammonia with the formation of hydrocyanic acid without the use of catalysts
Increase the amount of ammonia to eliminate. Here ammonia is used in an amount
the more than one mole of ammonia for each carbon atom present in the reaction mixture
of the hydrocarbons to be converted is. The proposal to increase the amount of ammonia
was made - because when using ammonia and hydrocarbons in one

The heating of the reaction tube or the reaction space elements can
In a particularly advantageous manner by gas firing, the regenerative
to be led. Before the acetylene is removed, the hydrocyanic acid is used, for example
removed from the mixture by alkaline washing with sodium hydroxide solution. The reaction
can be carried out in unfilled reaction spaces. But also filling materials,
which favorably influence the reaction, for example aluminum oxide on support bodies
or as such, are introduced into the reaction spaces. In some cases it has
the addition of oxygen-containing; gases not involved in the reaction
in small amounts, for example of water vapor, proved to be beneficial, probably
because of the undesirable catalytic decomposition of ammonia into its elements at random
active sites in the reaction space by poisoning these active sites with the
added gases, is reduced.

The method is carried out, for example, using the apparatus shown in the drawing. The ammonia intended for conversion, after passing through the speedometer i and the pressure regulator 2, combines with the methane that has passed through a gas meter. The mixture enters the dryer 3 and from there, from the reducing valve, 4 into the reaction tube 7, which consists of aluminum oxide and has an internal diameter, which is housed in the furnace and has a length of 8 cm. The gas mixture, - Removing the austriti the tube 7 either transit DIE filled with caustic soda and sulfuric acid washing apparatus io or transit, the pipe 1 is 3 direct- sucked via the, tap connector by the suction pump ii 12th The vacuum is regulated in the reaction tube with the aid of vacuum gauges 5 and 6. The hydrocyanic acid is washed out in the first washing tower and the undecomposed ammonia is washed out in the second. In the caustic soda that is placed in the first washing tower, the amount of hydrogen cyanide absorbed can be determined by adding potassium iodide and titration with silver nitrate, while the amount of ammonia absorbed is determined by titration with sulfuric acid. The quantities of the gases brought into reaction, namely the hydrocarbons and the ammonia, as well as the reaction products washed out in the corresponding time are determined directly in this way.

It follows from this that the temperature coefficient of the rate of decomposition of ammonia is smaller than that of the rate of formation of hydrogen cyanide: To determine the amount of ammonia destruction when using an excess of ammonia compared to methane at normal pressure, experiments were carried out in which ammonia was used in an excess of 25 percent by volume over methane. -The comparison. The values of the following table -with those of the preceding ones shows that the amount of destroyed ammonia when using an excess at normal pressure compared to that at negative pressure under otherwise identical conditions is 66 to 70% compared to 21.5 to 23%: In the process according to the invention, in comparison to the reaction of methane with excess ammonia at normal pressure, the essential advantage of the simultaneous formation of substantial amounts of acetylene is obtained. When the duration of the stay in the vacuum is increased to 0.1 seconds, the hydrogen cyanide yield reaches the same amount (201) as when heating at normal pressure for 0.6 seconds. The production of a partial pressure by vacuum at high temperatures by the process according to the invention requires a significantly lower energy expenditure compared to that by gas dilution, since in the latter case very significant amounts of gas used for dilution have to be brought to high temperatures uselessly. Furthermore, since the dwell time is not shortened by diluting the hydrocarbons, the tests show that a substantial part of the methane is converted into carbon, which is deposited in the pipes. On the one hand, there remains a threat to the technical implementation through clogging of the reaction spaces used; on the other hand, the essential advantage of the process according to the invention, namely the simultaneous formation of significant amounts of acetylene, is not obtained.
