Lubricating oil additive contains, as active constituents, (co)polymers, or (co)oligomers of monomers with long-chain alkyl gps. obtd. by free-radical polymerisation. The free radical initiators (I) used must: (a) decompose to form prim. prods. that are easily sepd. and/or: (b) form no strongly polar decompsn. prods. and are used in amts. of 0.01-5 wt.% under controlled polymerisation conditions, so that the Mw of the prod. is in the 500-30000 range.
