Description
Process for the regeneration of adsorbent carbons The invention relates to a process for the revitalization of adsorption coal, as used in benzene recovery plants or the like. Is used. Such coal is usually regenerated by heating or treating the loaded coal with so-called purge gases in the Heat. However, these means do not do justice to all cases. Many times, for example in the production of benzene, they lead to incomplete regeneration. It stays After each expulsion, constituents return to the charcoal, which gradually accumulate and so gradually reduce the adsorption capacity of the coal, so that gradually a larger number of periods of work the coal of a more thorough, deeper one Must be subjected to regeneration.
According to the invention, adsorption coal, as used in benzene recovery plants or the like. For use. comes, in a closed mass initially, z. B. with overheated Steam, preheated to about 2oo ° and then mixed in with steam oxygen-containing gases, especially air, up to a total oxygen content of the gases of a maximum of 15 percent by volume oxygen in this way. Regulation of temperature Treated at about 3oo to 500 ° that only an oxidation of the impurities takes place.
According to the invention the thorough regeneration of the damaged succeeds Coal with practical avoidance of annoying burn-up. Burning the impurities starts by itself, only as a result of the addition of oxygen. The temperature of the gases has no direct influence on the destruction of the impurities. The process is self-sustaining without any external heat input only through the Heat of reaction that arises when the impurities are oxidized. A feed heat extraneous to the process is not required.
When working according to the invention, one more or less develops limited reaction zone through which the coal mass travels with the progressive oxidation of the impurities. This results in a heat balance, insofar as the supplied oxygen-containing Gases through the already regenerated layers of coal are heated by them cool them down at the same time. The gases emerging from the reaction mass cause in turn, the preheating of the coal layers still to be regenerated. By the .invention mode of operation then continues to have the effect that the Impurities are removed without a deposition of secondary carbon he follows.
Proposals have already become known which amount to for the treatment of coal for the purpose of its activation or regeneration oxygen-containing Use gases, water vapor or mixtures of both. None of the known ones procedure lets t however recognize the features of the invention = those therein that the removal of the impurities without separation of secondary '' Carbon without external heat supply with lumpy coal in a closed mass succeed. On the contrary, the known methods show that they either work first towards the formation of secondary carbon, the must be removed again afterwards, or that it is carried out with external heat supply be, or that they are another to achieve the effect according to the invention lack the necessary action.
In addition to what has been said before, there is also the fact that most of those who have become known Proposals concern procedures for the activation and otherwise reveal, that the same procedure for activation and regeneration is not always used Target lead, so that such suggestions do not affect the method of the invention can be closed.
The regeneration of the coal, according to the invention, in a dormant shift is carried out is expediently carried out in the adsorbers themselves. The regeneration can be carried out at ordinary, elevated or reduced pressure, the Oxygen concentration and temperature the pressure conditions within the specified Limits are to be adjusted.
The oxygen concentrations to be used, the flow rate of the oxygen-containing mixture, the reaction temperatures, the gas temperature, etc. are still essentially dependent on the course of the process. conditional Type of activated carbon itself and on the type and amount of harmful adsorbed Impurities. Incidentally, the oxygen concentrations and temperatures are interdependent insofar as z. B. higher oxygen concentrations lower Temperatures determine - and vice versa. In general, an oxygen content should be the oxygen-water vapor mixtures of less than rö percent by volume, z. B. 2 to 8 Percentage by volume, essentially come into question. The oxygen is beneficial in Form of air supplied.
In some cases it has proven to be useful to regenerate the Activated carbons of a pre-cleaning z. B. subjugate by treating with solvents, which are capable of removing some of the impurities by dissolving them from the activated carbon to remove.
Der Abbrand der Kohle selbst war erheblich geringer als 5 % .Example Activated charcoal, which had lost about% of its original capacity due to prolonged use in the benzene production plant of a gasworks, was heated to about 200 ° C. with superheated steam. About 25 percent by volume of air was then added to the steam. Immediately, as a result of the oxidation of the constituents on the carbon, there was a rapid increase in temperature. The temperature inside the coal was then kept between 400 and 450 ° C by changing the amount of air added until most of the damaging components had been oxidized and removed. In this way, the original adsorption capacity of the coal was almost completely restored. The burn-up of the coal itself was considerably less than 5 % .
