Description
Process for producing thixotropic properties in aqueous Dispersions of plastic compounds such as rubber and the like The present invention relates to a method by which in aqueous dispersions of e.g. B. rubber, Gutta-percha, balata, factice and the like, e.g. B. in natural rubber milk, the property the thixotropy, possibly in addition to that of the elasticity can be. The thixotropy facilitates the processing of dispersions of the above Art is very important in a wide variety of areas, as shown in the following example of a thixotropic rubber milk mixture is to be explained. However, it appears it is appropriate to say a few words beforehand about the thixotropic state in general.
Thixotropy is the phenomenon that colloids with their Dispersants form a plastic, sometimes even elastic gel, which by movement, stirring, shaking, pressure and the like in the sol state, i.e. in liquid State, can be transferred. Of particular importance here is the fact that so liquefied dispersions, if left at rest, are returned to the plastic ones Skip gel state. Substances that are thixotropic are found in nature, but can also be produced in the laboratory. To the \ Taturkolloiden that have thixotropic properties, include e.g. B. different thixotropic clays, like the American colloidal clay bentonite. From artificially placed animals thixotropic Gelen is z. B. the dialyzed Eisenoxvdsol mentioned, which one by adding a few millimoles of an electrolyte solution, such as. B. sodium chloride or sulphate, can transform into a thiixotropic gel. Just like one through diverse Additions and their dimensioning in the case of iron oxide sol or an organic thixotropic Sol, e.g. B. your benzoylcystine, the time it takes for your sol state to gel is required, can shorten or% lengthen within wide limits, so one can also with the naturally occurring thixotropic colloids the thixotropic properties largely influence. Is z. B. natural bentonite after being mixed with water Dispersion was stirred, dialyzed, so it loses the ability to be a thixotropic To form gel. If electrolytes are added to a bentonite dialyzed in this way, it can be Here too, as in the above-mentioned cases, the development of the thixotropic state occurs and in particular the consistency of the resulting thixotropic gel within wide limits regulate as desired.
Taucht man z. As has long been known, dispersions offer plastic masses in aqueous compositions compared to organosols, d. H. colloidal solutions of the same substances in organic solvents, when processed in many ways greater difficulty. This is especially true for Rubber milk, in contrast to solutions of rubber in organic solvents. One dives z. B. any form in rubber milk with a rubber content of 35% " which value corresponds to your average content of the rubber milk, so find after removing the mold from the immersion bath and drying the adhering layer, that the remaining rubber film is much thinner; than if you take the shape would have dipped into a 5% gasoline rubber solution. The reason for that is the low viscosity of the aqueous dispersion compared to that in the organic solvent. The transfer of rubber milk or rubber milk mixture in. the thixotropic state now not only eliminates this problem, but makes it possible Furthermore, from the outset, significantly more concentrated dispersions are to be used bring. If you dive a solid body, e.g. B. a diving form, in a highly concentrated thixotropic rubber milk mixture, so is exercised by the immersion of the mold Pressure liquefies the mass enough to allow perfect easy diving. If the form is then slowly removed from the bath, it turns out that one is considerable thicker layer remains on the mold, as the mass, left at rest, increases tends towards the viscosity of the gel form and, as a result, increasingly one Resists dripping.
While it used to be the case to achieve a submerged body of a thickness, how they z. B. for gloves, bicycle grips and the like. Is required, a whole Number of dips had to make, between each of which a drying process was turned on. A single immersion is now sufficient, even for objects from several millimeters of wall thickness. The value of such a rubber dispersion However, it is by no means restricted to the immersion process, but applies in the same way -Measures for the painting of fabrics, because here the mass is due to the painting process is liquefied enough to go smoothly under your knife as you go on the other hand, once applied to the fabric, immediately changes to the gel state and therefore, even when applying layers of considerable thickness, there are no irregularities caused by drainage and the like.
A number of so-called thickeners are already available for brushing and dipping purposes Proposed has been brought to the natural thickness of rubber milk to fix and obtain a viscous liquid. One has to do this more differently Plant mucilages and thickeners such as tragacanth, Iceland moss and others. m., also formaldehyde. However, these Verfalv-s have the disadvantage that the viscosity the rubber milk cannot be reduced again as desired, and that accordingly the concentration of the rubber milk must be kept within certain limits. In contrast the thixotropic systems offer the advantage that they can be used wherever it is required can be made thin again without any special treatment "- can be grounded, and vice versa.
The application of the thixotropic mixtures does not just need to be done Brushing to be done in the usual way by means of the doctor blade. It is just as possible to use the thixotropic rubber dispersion for pouring or to use in conjunction with a spray process, as they are also used in this Fall remains fluid while doing the job, to, left alone, again to assume the plastic state. Show the advantages of thixotropic dispersions not only in the manufacture of items using rubber, balata and the like. Are firmly connected to documents, such. B. the rubberized fabrics, but even with independent bodies consisting of such substances. Particularly beneficial The thixotropic dispersions prove to be in the manufacture of objects by pouring. The manufacture of rubber articles by pouring water In practice, dispersions only become possible through the use of thixotropic Systems. It is also important not to be underestimated that the return in the liquid state or the maintenance of the latter during arbitrary allows the expulsion of air bubbles from the dispersions during Air bubbles are common in dispersions artificially thickened by thickeners can only be eliminated with the greatest difficulty or not at all.
The advantage of the can also be seen in the production of mixtures Pretreatment. One can easily, as long as the thin liquid state exists, a homogeneous one Make a mixture and then store it as long as you want without worrying about it must that the fillers or other additives settle, because this through the solidification that occurs is prevented. If you want the mixing ratio afterwards change or add more substances, you only need the mixtures by stirring etc. to return to the liquid state. as valuable An accompanying phenomenon has been found to be rubber milk and mixtures thereof in the thixotropic state can be drained more easily, presumably because the species the water retention has become a different one.
Colloid dispersions more plastic; leave in general and chewing gum milk in particular can be put in the thixotropic state that one ensures the presence of thixotropic colloids. This can be done in a number of ways und Weise bewirlteei: One sets z. B. the rubber milk already thixotropic colloids to, such as B. Dixiclay, colloidal iron oxide and the like It must be taken into account that the final concentration as well as that present in the rubber milk Electrolytes do not adversely affect the thixotropic state of the colloid. But you can also use the rubber milk with non-thixotropic, but with appropriate Treatment of colloids to be made thixotropic and only this mixture transfer to the tllixotropic state. For example, latex is mixed with dialyzed Bentonite or Chinaclay and the like. And then carry out this mixture by "adding a Electrolytes such as B. potassium chloride, sodium sulfate and others. en., in the thixotropic Condition over. This method is particularly suitable because it has the properties allowed to develop in any degree. A third; possibility still exists in that the colloids naturally occurring in rubber milk are in transferred to the thixotropic state. So one can <for the addition of lithium sulfate Put chewing milk into the tleixotropic state, which is probably due to a corresponding Change in the glucosides present in the rubber milk. One can produce a mixture that is not only thixotropic but also elastic Has properties, this can be achieved by using appropriate Additions. especially those of a liquid immiscible with water, such as z. B. (_) 1, ensures the formation of an elastic two-pleated system. For example, by adding t ') 1 to a rubber milk that has already been made thixotropic with clay gain an elastic dispersion.
Of course, the invention relates not only to dispersions of rubber, but also to those of other plastic materials, e.g. B. factice, balata and gutta-percha, as well as on dispersions of all substances with additives of fillers, dyes and vulcanizing substances. The dispersions prepared according to the invention can be used finitely advantageously for the most varied of purposes. Among other things, they have the particular advantage that they can be used e.g. B. can bring in a fluid state to good adaptation to a complicated profile forums and then convert it into the gel form, whereby the retention of the shape is ensured. EXAMPLE 100 cc of a 60 ° ioigete chewing milk concentrate, which has been protected with 1 g of the stabilizer known commercially under the name saprotin, are mixed with 20 ccene of a 511 /, i, - "en thixotropic iron oxide, whereby a thixotropic rubber milk concentrate is formed EXAMPLE 3.5 g of a clay preparation known commercially under the name Dixiclav in the form of a dialyzed aqueous suspension which, by adding KOH, is brought to a pH of at least 10% are added to 100 ccm of a dozen or so rubber milk In this way a tleixotropic rubber mixture is obtained. EXAMPLE 3 To 100 cc of a 35% rubber milk is added 25 cc of a 12% dialyzed, non-thixotropic bentonite dispersion and 15 cc of 10% KOH The bentonite contained in it is made thixotropic by the potassium hydroxide solution and also gives the rubber milk its thixotropic properties nth rubber milk concentrate are mixed with 5 cc of a 100% Li SO4 solution. Example s 759 skin milk concentrate with a "dry content of 750%" is mixed with .30 g of Dixiclac (a commercially available clay preparation), 20 g of colloidal ZnO (Cadox) and 20 g of a 50% oil emulsion. A thixotropic mixture is obtained with elastic properties.
