Christomanos (Z. f. anorg. Chemie, Bd. 41, S. 276 [igo¢]) Phosphortribromid.Process for the reduction of anhydrous halides According to investigations
by Karl S e u -b e r t and Alfred Schmidt (Liebigs Annalen, vol. 267, pp. 2z8 ff.
[18g2]), the liquid halides, such as SnCl4, As C13, Sb C15, are metallic
Completely indifferent to magnesium, while they, as vapors over highly heated
Magnesium passed to be reduced to the elements. Behaves in the same way
Christomanos (Z. f. Anorg. Chemie, Vol. 41, p. 276 [igo []) phosphorus tribromide.
It has now been observed that in contrast to this, magnesium
and its related elements, zinc and aluminum, with these halides
low temperature (e.g. about 35 ° C) react vigorously with reduction to the
Elements or lower valence levels, if you consider the halides, in organic
Solvents dissolved, can act on one of these metals. Used for this
it is advantageous to use those solvents that react with the metal
the metal halide formed are able to form a soluble addition compound,
such as B. open or cyclic ethers, ketones, carboxylic acid esters and others. Leave it
in this way z. B. the halides of phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth,
Tin, mercury, aluminum and others. reduce to the elements; Titan (q.) Chlori, d,
Iron (3) chloride et al. cannot be converted into the metals using the present process
but only transfer it to connections of lower valence levels.
Beispiel i Zu i Grammatom Magnesiumpulver
i Mol.
Magnesiumbromidätherates mit Äther extrahiert. Die Reaktion verläuft quantitativ;
i Mol.
mindestens 3 Mol. absolutem Äther bei Raumtemperatur etwa i/...
i Mol.
bei Raumtemperatur i Mol.
Ausbeute ioo °f, reines Zinn.Should the reduction fail to occur, leave it

Magnesium, zinc or aluminum are used. Example i To i gram atom of magnesium powder
(e.g. the types FF, FF2o, FF2i from I. G. Farbenindustrie Aktiengesellschaft)

Magnesium bromide etherates extracted with ether. The reaction is quantitative;
the reaction product is free of magnesium. For the complete removal of the phosphorus tribromide,
which is stubbornly retained by the phosphorus formed, the reaction product is heated
in a high vacuum to about 2oo ° in an inert gas atmosphere. The phosphorus possesses
after this treatment a phosphorus content of over 99%, is light red in color,
burns to phosphorus pentoxide and dissolves to hypophosphorous acid even in cold lye

4 gram atoms of magnesium powder under at least 4M01. absolute ether at room temperature
1 mole of tin tetrachloride, the reaction, which begins vigorously after a short time, results
to metallic tin, which can be formed by decanting and washing out

Add about 4 to 5 gram atoms of magnesium powder or magnesium grits
at least 3 mol. of absolute ether at room temperature about 1 / ... gram atom of iodine and

Magnesium, which, as described in Example 3, by iodine or by adding
about ljroo gram atom of bromine was activated under at least 4 moles of absolute ether
At room temperature, one mole of tin tetrabromide leads to the violent onset of the reaction
in a short time for the deposition of metallic tin. Yield 100 ° F, pure tin.
Beispiels Zu etwa 2 Grammatomen Zinkpulver gibt man unter mindestens
3M01. trockenem Äther bei Raumtemperatur i Mol.
Example Add at least 2 gram atoms of zinc powder to
3M01. dry ether at room temperature i mol. Antimony tribromide and supports
the reaction, which soon sets in, by gentle warming, so that the ether is boiling
remain. The black soil body is separated from the supernatant solution, riding
Ether washed out and diluted in to remove the excess zinc metal
Acid entered. The reduction is quantitative. Deep black, finely divided
Antimony. Example 6 To about 2 gram atoms of magnesium (coarse powder or shavings)
one under more than 9 mol. Pure dry ethyl acetate with cooling one with ethyl acetate
dilute solution of arsenic tribromide. When the violent reaction subsided
it is heated to about 50 ° for a short time. The black body becomes after separation
washed out of the supernatant solution and added to dilute acid. the
The yield of black, finely divided arsenic is almost quantitative.
Beispiel?
mindestens i Mol. absolutem Äther i Mol.
Niederschlag auftretende Quecksilber (i) chlori@d verschwunden ist.
i Mol.
erhält man in quantitativer Ausbeute metallisches Zinn.
Beispiel
Zinntetrabromid. Man beendet
Example? Add to i gram atom of aluminum (powder or semolina)
at least one mole of absolute ether and one mole of mercury (2) chloride at room temperature.
After the reaction, which soon began to subside, continued until the ether boiled
increases, the reaction mixture is heated to boiling until the intermediate as white
Precipitation occurring mercury (i) chlori @ d has disappeared. The protruding
Solution is separated off, the sediment is washed by decanting with ether
and to remove the excess aluminum with a suitable diluted
Acid added. The reaction proceeds quantitatively to mercury. Example 8 Will
to about 3 gram atoms of zinc powder under more than 4 mol. of absolute ether at room temperature
i mole of tin (4) chloride was added and the rest of the procedure as in Example: 2, see above
metallic tin is obtained in quantitative yield.
example
Add an initial amount to about 3 gram atoms of magnesium (coarse powder or shavings)
Cooling under more than 6 mol. Dry acetone i mol. Tin tetrabromide. One finishes
the violent reaction after subsiding by briefly heating to about
5o to 55 ° and thus receives quantitative metallic tin.
9o °/a; sehr fein verteiltes graues Pulver. In absolutem Äther allein erfolgt wegen
Beispiel ii Eine Lösung von i Mol. w.asserfreiern Eisen(3)chlorid in absolutem Äther
Example io i mol. Anhydrous cadmium bromide and a little more than i
Gram atoms of magnesium are under a mixture of absolute ether and absolute
Acetone (e.g. i Vol.: 0.3 Vol.) Heated, with a strong reaction with separation
of metallic cadmium is used. It takes several hours to complete the reaction
heated to the boiling point of the solvent mixture. Yield between 8o and
90 ° / a; very finely divided gray powder. In absolute ether alone occurs because of
.the poor solubility of cadmium bromide only a minimal reduction, in absolute terms
Acetone alone will give a much lower yield (about 20%) of cadmium.
Example ii A solution of 1 mole of anhydrous iron (3) chloride in absolute ether
reacts with 1.5 gram atoms of magnesium at the boiling point of the solution to form
of almost white iron (2) chloride and magnesium chloride etherate. Even when in use
a larger excess of magnesium occurs neither in concentrated nor in
dilute solutions of iron (3) chloride in absolute ether result in a reduction to metallic
Iron. In any case, the reduction stops at the iron (2) chloride stage.
