Elektronenemission hervorgerufenen Energieentzugs in sehr kurzer Zeit so stark ab,
If an electrical circuit is interrupted by a switch, its
Contacts are in a highly evacuated housing, so occurs when the contact is separated
an electron discharge which conductively bridges the gap between the contacts and thus the flow of current
lasts for a while. Depending on the type of contact material used
A distinction is made between two types of electron emission. When the contacts are made of a material with a high melting point
exist, e.g. B. made of tungsten, the so-called glow electron discharge occurs. It
namely becomes the point at which the contacts touch each other before the separation,
due to the high current density heated so strongly that it comes to glow, whereby from the negative contact - · the
Cathode - glow electrons are repelled without a result of the 'high melting point
of the contact material, evaporation of the cathode surface occurs. If the contacts
are further apart, the cathode cools down as a result of the
Electron emission caused energy withdrawal so strongly in a very short time,
that the electron emission ceases and the current passing between the contacts
is interrupted.
die Oberfläche der Kathode sich soIf, on the other hand, the contacts are made of a material with a relatively low
Melting point, e.g. B. copper exist, it occurs at the moment of contact separation
a so-called cathode spot on the cathode, d. H. due to the high current density
Induced heating of the cathode surface causes a certain amount of the cathode metal to evaporate. If now
the electrons emitted by the cathode at the same time hit this metal vapor,
so it is ionized; so negatively charged electrons are formed after the opposite contact
to migrate, and positively charged ions moving towards the cathode accumulate on its surface
and thereby creating a voltage gradient directly on the surface of the cathode which is of the order of magnitude of
Million volts per centimeter. This high voltage gradient attracts more electrons
out of the cathode and thus causes the path between the two contacts, which is filled with metal vapor, as well
then still remains conductive when the contact distance has already been reached
has become relatively large. In the event that the voltage difference
disappears for a moment between the contacts, which z. B. with alternating current
occurs at the end of each half cycle, electron emission commences instantaneously
off and cannot start again when the voltage returns, since meanwhile
the surface of the cathode looks like this
der Schalter bedingt.has cooled far that the conditions for the occurrence of a cathode spot are not
more are available. Contacts made of a material with a low melting point are therefore
quite useful with alternating current. With direct current, however,. where the voltage between the contacts has its full value
maintains, it would not be possible to interrupt the current with such contacts,
ίο Rather, the cathode stain would be permanent
persist and in a short time a destruction of the surface of the negative
Cause contact. So until now, you had to rely on vacuum switches
for direct current contact materials with a high melting point, e.g. B. tungsten to use, which is a considerable increase in price
the switch is conditional.
However, even with direct current, contacts made of materials with a low melting point,
z. B. made of copper, if there is a voltage between the switch contacts during the interruption process
is placed, which is a compensating current directed opposite to the current to be interrupted
evokes. This is achieved in a very simple manner according to the invention in that the direct current to be interrupted
an alternating current is superimposed. This will reduce the voltage difference between the contacts when switching off
temporarily made to zero, so that at this moment the circuit is finally interrupted
will.
In the figure, an embodiment of the invention is shown. At 50
is the housing of a vacuum switch, in which the contacts 51 and 52
are located. The supply lines are vacuum-tight into the interior of the housing through corrugated pipes
introduced. The lower corrugated pipe has such a mobility that the movement
the switch rod can be transferred into the interior of the switch. The vacuum switch
lies in a circuit which is indicated by the direct current generator 57 and the .ein resistor4 & schematically indicated
Consumer is educated. In series with the switch is the overcurrent
responsive trip coil, which has a pawl on the lever 54 and a
The opening spring mechanism acts. Furthermore is in the circuit
the secondary coil 70 of a transformer 69 connected, its primary winding
is powered by a suitable AC power source. A circuit breaker 72 is located in the primary circuit of the transformer
as well as the contacts 64 and 65, which shortly after the separation of the switch contacts 51 and 52
getting closed.
The mode of operation of the arrangement is as follows: When the release device responds
the contacts 51 and 52 are separated, with an arc between them
or a discharge occurs. Shortly thereafter, the contacts 64 and 65 touch each other and thus close the primary circuit
of the transformer 69. As a result, an alternating voltage is induced in the secondary winding 70 thereof
on the voltage of the generator 57 in the load circuit, stored. When the superimposed
AC voltage is sufficiently large, the current in the load circuit will be at some point on the AC voltage wave
brought completely or almost to zero. At this moment the arc or the electron discharge between the
Vacuum switch contacts 51 and 52 extinguished and the circuit interrupted.
As soon as the circuit is interrupted at the contacts of the vacuum switch, it disappears
the load on the secondary winding of the transformer, and its primary winding only takes a magnetizing current
on. The primary circuit can now be interrupted again by the switch 72. The switch 72 can
either operated by hand or by one at the same time as the switch movement
set in motion, but with a delay to be switched off interruption device, z. B. a timing relay controlled
will.
