Abstract

A steel melt of specified composition is cast to thin steel slab, annealed, descaled, finish rolled to hot rolled strip and subjected to controlled cooling. A steel melt is cast to thin steel slab which contains iron, inevitable impurities and the following, all expressed as wt%. carbon (C): 0.06-3, silicon (Si): 0.1-3.0 and manganese (Mn) 0.3-1.1. The sum of Si and Mn contents is 1.5-3.5. At least titanium (Ti) or niobium (Nb) is present at a level of 0.005 - 0.15. The following maximum percentages are also contained: chromium (Cr): 0.8, molybdenum (Mo): 0.8, copper (Cu): 1, nickel (Ni): 1. The thin slab is annealed from an entry temperature at 850 -1050 degreesC, at 1000 -1200 degreesC for 10 - 60 minutes. The slabs are descaled in a washer, the spray being at 300 bar or more. The slabs are finish-rolled to hot-rolled strip or sheet at temperatures of 750 - 1000 degreesC. Controlled cooling brings the sheet to a suitable temperature for winding onto rolls.
