Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a combined transmitter and receiver ger for optical communication according to the Preamble of claim 1.
The sending and receiving stations for the optical message usually contain as optical transmitters a laser diode used to regulate the bias current and the mod lationsstrom optically coupled to a monitor photodiode is. A white is for receiving the optical useful signals tere photodiode provided.
To reduce the effort for optical messages Transmission is particularly in the case of near-optical optics Networks for both directions of transmission both at point to Point connections as well as in passive optical networks common optical fiber used. In terms of The available laser diodes will also be used for both Direction of transmission with one within the scope of the specimen litter the same wavelength worked. For this same thing lenbetrieb has adopted the so-called equality procedure citizens, in which the laser diodes for both transmission lines can send messages simultaneously. Another common one The operating mode used is the so-called ping-pong mode, at which the laser diodes send alternately.
A further reduction in the total effort at opti messaging is by reducing the on wall for the sending and receiving stations. Since the Costs of the sending and receiving stations significantly due to the opto-electrical converters, i.e. the laser and the photodi oden, to be determined, the saving is one of the opto electrical converter desired.
The object of the present invention is therefore in being a combined transmitter and receiver at the beginning mentioned type so that one of the opto-elec trical converter can be omitted, but in the Hin look at the temperature and aging-dependent characteristics the laser diodes continue to be able to regulate Bias current and modulation current must exist.
According to the invention the object is achieved in that the one Combined transmitter and receiver mentioned above under Ver no monitor diode to use the partial reflection Tiertes light of the station's own laser diode for their Regulation by the in the characterizing part of claim 1 given characteristics is formed. It results in before in addition to an increase in that of the laser diode emitted light output an additional effort reduction tion, as part of the current to the monitor diode closed electronic components such as the Photo current amplifier can be omitted. Preferred further training the combined transmitter and receiver according to the invention gers are described in claims 2 to 8.
The invention is intended in the following with reference to in the drawing illustrated embodiments are explained in more detail.

In Fig. 1, an embodiment of the transmitter and receiver fiction, contemporary with a symmetrical 2 × 2 coupler K, which has 2 free fiber ends on each connection side, is shown. At the first free fiber end 1 of one side of the coupler K, the laser diode LD is ruled out, which is connected to power supplies for the modulation current Imod and the bias current Io. With the second free fiber end 2 of this side, the photodiode PD is connected, to which a receiver ED for the digital transmission signals and a control device RE for the bias current and modulation current control of the laser diode are electrically connected. With the first free fiber end 3 of the other side of the coupler K, the optical waveguide for the signal transmission is connected, the second free fiber end 4 of this coupler side is closed with a defined reflection point RS.
For the implementation of a defined reflection point RS, several solutions are possible in which the free end of the coupler fiber KF is prepared accordingly. When exporting approximately example of FIG. 3, the coupler fiber KF is to cut off straight, so that a flat end face both SF for the sheath M as well as the fiber core of the coupler fiber KF KN results. Subsequently, the coupler fiber KF is encased in the end face SF with a plastic sheath KM, which consists of a partially permeable synthetic resin-containing adhesive with a corresponding refractive index for light of the frequency range used. In the exemplary embodiment, a reflectance of 4% was set, so that a comparatively small part of the light from the laser diode LD coupled into this branch of the coupler is reflected back into the coupler and reaches the photodiode PD via the fiber end 2 .
Another solution for a defined reflection point using a mirror arrangement SP is shown in FIG. 4. For this purpose, a flat end face SF was again generated both for the jacket M and for the core KN of the coupler fiber KF. The end face and thus the light outlet opening opposite a mirror SP is arranged, which is attached to a mirror holder SPH. The Spiegelhalter tion SPH is screwed onto a threaded piece GWS, which surrounds the coupler fiber KF, so that the distance between the mirror SP and the end face SF can be changed by rotating the mirror holder SPH and the reflectance can thus be adjusted. Disturbing reflection components from the end face of the fiber can be prevented by angled grinding of the fiber or dispersion oil.
A further possibility of setting the degree of reflection at the reflection points RS according to FIGS. 3 and 4 is obtained by bending the fiber in question directly in front of the reflection point. Since the light in curved fibers is strongly attenuated depending on the bending radius, the power of the reflected light can be easily adjusted by bending the fiber in question.
In so-called ping-pong operation, the photodiode receives from the opposite laser diode only a signal if the station's own laser diode does not transmit. The station ne photodiode either takes the reflected radiation the own laser diode or the transmission signal of the distant one Laser diode on, so that by an appropriate switch the output signal of the photodiode PD either to the receiver ED for the digital signal or to the control device RE is switched. In the combined transmitter according to the invention and receiver is omitted optically with the laser diode coupled monitor diode, the function of which is the receiving photodi or takes over. In this case, the laser diode only has to to emit light towards the coupler K The other side the laser diode to which the monitor in the prior art diode is coupled, can therefore be fully mirrored, so that the power of that emitted by the laser diode Useful light increased accordingly.
When using the equilibrium method, that is, when the laser diodes of both directions of transmission simultaneously transmit on the same wavelength, it is expedient to reduce the cross-talk to separate the transmission signals of the two directions by an electrical frequency separation from one another. While transferring in one direction according to Fig. 4a to the amplitude A in the baseband, the transmission signals of the other directions are modulated by a sine carrier, and thereby, as shown in Fig. Shifted by a specific frequency with respect to the base band 4b. Due to the reflection at the defined reflection point RS, both signals reach the photodiode PD and are converted into corresponding electrical signals. These signals can be easily separated from one another by means of electrical filters, so that, if necessary after a conversion of the frequency-shifted signal, the corresponding signal components are fed to the receiver ED for the digital signals and the control RE for the bias current and the modulation current of the laser diode.
Instead of a symmetrical coupler, an unsymme trical coupler can be used.
In the future, the practical use of the combined transmitter and receiver according to the invention will mainly take the form of optoelectronic integrated circuits in which the laser diode, photodiode and a connection for the optical waveguide are integrated on a chip CH, as shown in FIG. 5. The photodiode PD and the laser diode LD are connected to the optical waveguide in the arrangement according to FIG. 5 via a controllable coupler. As a controllable coupler, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer was provided, which is coupled on one side to the laser diode and the photo diode and on the other side to the optical waveguide, the second connection of this side being designed as a defined reflection point RS . The Mach-Zehnder interferometer consists of two coupling sides KS1, KS2, which are connected to each other via the electrical waveguide. To control the permeability, one of the two waveguides is arranged adjacent to an electrode EL, which can be supplied with an electrical signal. Now sends the station's own laser diode, then the coupler is controlled by the electrode so that, for example, 99% of the light output reaches the optical waveguide and 1% in the branch with the defined reflection point RS. In turn, 99% of the reflected light reaches the photodiode, which generates a corresponding electrical signal for the laser control RE. Receives the optoelectronic integrated circuit light from the opposite station, then the coupler is switched so that the light from the optical fiber can reach the photodiode completely. This enables a simple application for the ping-pong operation in integrated circuit technology already mentioned.
