Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a method for determining the Nitrogen oxide content in a measuring room, especially that Combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine.
When optimizing the combustion process in Kraftma There is a conflict of objectives. Through high burns efficiency is increased, but also the highly temperature-dependent production of stick cloth oxide increased. In internal combustion engines with air excess such. B. Diesel engines or gas turbines is one Catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxide (NO) as with Gasoline engine with regulated catalytic converter not possible.
Through precise temporal and spatial control of the Combustion process can limit the NO development will hold. One is essential for this Knowledge of the combustion process, for which the NO-Ge stop and its spatial and / or temporal distribution offer particularly advantageous information.
In Applied Optics, Vol. 29 No. 16 (June 1990), pp. 2392 to 2404 is a method for determining the NO distribution in the Combustion chamber of an engine specified, the la uses serum-induced fluorescence.

The principle of frequency modulation spectroscopy is in described in the literature, e.g. B. IEEE Journal of Quantem Electronics, QE-20, No. 9, (1984), pp. 1045-1050 with Refe limit, and offers extremely sensitive detection method. The choice of a harmonic of the NO molecule preferably the fourth harmonic with an absorpti line at around 1.3 µm in connection with a III-V Semiconductor laser as light source made possible by the on set of technically mature optical fibers and optical components used for this a simple one and mechanically insensitive structure, which in particular is also suitable for use in motor vehicles.
What is essential to frequency modulation spectroscopy is that an amplitude-modulated detector signal occurs, if the absorption or dispersion in the examined gas ge mix for the two side lines of the modulated lasers mission is different, while an even change change by z. B. Absorption on soot particles not too egg ner such detector signal modulation leads.
The measurement can be based on transmitted or back scattered light. When the transmission contains the detected signal is along the line of sight from on Coupling point and decoupling point integrated influence of the measuring light in the measuring room. A spatial resolution can by separate measurements simultaneously or successively along several different lines of sight and combination of measurement results obtained separately. Meh Further lines of sight can be separated by and / or displaceable coupling-in points and / or coupling-out points of the measuring room are determined. Taking advantage of symmetries in the measuring room can be done with a few lines of sight get along. A high number of lines of sight can by means of computer-aided tomography procedures to a spatial resolution can be linked.
A spatial resolution can also be achieved by crossed beams len take place, whereby a beam is a powerful stimulus beam and the other beam the actual measurement beam of light is. The excitation beam changes in that of the optical properties of the gas or gas mixture z. B. by absorption saturation or strong effect. By modulation, in particular Pulse modulation of the excitation beam can influence it Crossing volume with the measuring beam lifted out and displayed closed on the composition in the crossing volume will be.
Another preferred measure for spatially resolved Determination of the NO content consists in the detection of backscattered light in connection with a Runtime evaluation. A direct term discrimination such as B. the LIDAR measuring principle requires because of the small Path length differences a very high processing wall. The runtime evaluation is therefore carried out by the preferred embodiments described below by a coherence length coding or by a time linear sweep of the modulation frequency.
In the coherence length coding is sketched as in Fig. 1, an interferometer, z. B. used a Michelson interferome ter.
According to the principle of frequency modulation spectroscopy an RF oscillator generates a high frequency signal from the Modu tion frequency fm, which a semiconductor laser HL modu liert. This creates in the emission spectrum of the laser two spaced ± fm symmetrical to the main line Sidelines. The modulation frequency is chosen so that one of the two side lines with the absorption line of the NO molecule z. B. together for the fourth harmonic falls. The modulation frequency is preferably in the range rich 10 GHz. The high modulation frequency is advantageous for the sensitive detection of pressure widened Ab sorption lines.
The light emitted by the laser is transmitted through a light guide ser L1 a fiber optic coupler beam splitter K1 leads, which leads the light evenly to the measuring room dividing fiber L2 and a balancing fiber L3.
The coupling of the fiber L2 to the measuring space R, for example as a combustion chamber of a piston engine takes place advantageously via a gradient index (GRIN) lens G1.
The end of the balancing fiber L3, which is approximately the same Length is like the fiber L2, is mirrored. That from the Measurement room backscattered into the fiber L2 via the lens G1 Light and after reflection in the balancing fiber L3 returning light are shared via the coupler K1 passed to fiber L4 and a second fiber optic Coupler K2 supplied, the mirrored with the end face Fiber L5, the variable range of sliding mirrors Sp and fiber L6 (if necessary with another GRIN lens G2) see above like the output fiber L7 a Michelson interferometer order forms.
As long as there is no nitrogen oxide in the measuring room, it remains the balance of the two spectral side lines too in the backscattered and returning on the fiber L2 Receive light. If NO occurs during the course of Ver burning process, this balance is broken and the backscattered light shows one by the NO absorption or dispersion caused amplitude modulation with the Mo dulation frequency fm, which also affects the in the off input fiber L7 of the photodiode PD supplied as a detector Light continues and as a modulation of the electrical off output signal of the photodiode occurs. By demodulation this diode signal with the modulation signal in the mixer M becomes quantitative for the presence of NO in the measuring room evaluable signal obtained. By means of the phase shifter PS can be the absorption (in-phase portion) or the disper sion (quadrature component) can be evaluated.
A spatial resolution within the measuring space, which has the extension D in a beam direction, can be followed by setting the coherence length Lc of the semiconductor laser HL. A measurable constructive or canceling interference of the backscattered light with the light returning in the compensating fiber only takes place in the interferometer if the transit time difference of the interfe rating optical signal components is not significantly greater than the coherence length of the laser light. The transit time difference in the interferometer results on the one hand from the position of the displaceable mirror and on the other hand from the backscatter position within the measuring space. The mirror position is therefore correlated with the backscatter position in the measuring space R. The interference leads within a range of the transit time shift by ΔL = 0 determined by the coherence length Lc to a course of the receiver signal of the photodiode over the mirror shift x with a plurality of minima and maxima ( FIG. 2).
It is now essential to recognize that even with a constant mirror position due to turbulence, fluctuations and other rapid changes in the measuring space, the receiver signal changes very quickly the position on the curve profile sketched in FIG. 2 and therefore a higher frequency alternating signal component is contained in the output signal. After the demodulation in the mixer M, this alternating signal component can be filtered out by a high-pass filter HP and serves as wet for the presence of nitrogen oxide in the section of the measuring space correlated with the mirror position x.
This gives you the opportunity to move through of the mirror and evaluation of the alternating signal components in the demodulated signal a spatially resolved determination of the NO content. The coherence length of the laser and thus the spatial resolution is in certain Limits through measures known per se for line mash Laser adjustment possible. The coherence length is for a line width of approx. 10 GHz at around 3 mm.
In the process with modulation that is changed in a linear manner frequency is the modulation frequency within a ge small range compared to the amount of the modulation frequency df changes at a constant rate, for example between 10 GHz and 10.5 GHz (df = 0.5 GHz) in 100 µsec.
The resulting sawtooth profile of the modulation frequency is outlined in FIG. 4B. Since the frequency range df is also small compared to the width of the absorption lines, the absorption within this range can be assumed to be constant.
The time-variable modulation frequency fmv is sketched as in FIG. 3, for example by mixing a fixed modulation frequency fmo (e.g. 10 GHz) from a fixed frequency generator FG with the tuned frequency (e.g. 0 to 0.5 GHz) of a controllable oscillator VCO generated in a mixer MF. This modulation frequency fmv is superimposed on the DC control signal of the semiconductor laser HL. The modulated light of the laser is fed to the measuring space R via a fiber L11, a coupler K3 and a fiber L12. The backscattered light from the measuring space into the fiber L12 is fed via the coupler K3 and an output fiber L13 to a photodiode PD as a detector. The electrical output signal of the detector is converted in a further mixer MD with the modulation frequency fmv. Because of the time-linear change in the modulation frequency, the mixture in MD results in a signal component at a difference frequency Δf, which depends on the transit time r of the optical signal and thus on the location x of the backscattering within the measuring space R. The transit time of the electrical signals and the optical signals in the fibers must be taken into account and preferably compensated for. By spectral analysis of the output signal of the mixer MD, a measurement signal dependent on the difference frequency can be obtained and from this a determination of the nitrogen oxide content as a function of the location x within the measurement space can be carried out. This variant of the method is partly similar to the FM-CW method known from radar technology, so that details of the modulation and evaluation can be partially adopted from this area.
