Abstract
Description
In 1930, the American physicist and spectroscopist described August Herman books a preparation method to produce a jet black soot-like structure from the semi-metal Bi [1]: In the presence of atmospheric Residual gas at a pressure of around 40 Pa is thermally evaporated and beats as Semi-metallic soot on a carrier or on the recipient wall. in the Anglo-Saxon language usage has developed for these networks from the smallest metal or semi-metal crystals naturalized the name Blacks. The following will accordingly spoken of "metal soot" when it comes to conductive Starting material (metals, semimetals or semiconductors). It is known that Networks of said starting materials are deep black if the individual Size s of the network-forming particles is in the 10 nm range. Independently of, whether the particles are crystalline (as in the case of most of the substances examined) or are amorphous (as in the case of some semiconducting substances), referred to below the established term "nanocrystal" [2] individual particles from this specific Size range (1 nm <s <30 nm with boundaries flowing on both sides). Accordingly, all macroscopic structures are made up of each other touching nanocrystals are summarized "nanocrystal networks" called.
The present patent has the representation and the technological use of Nanocrystal networks made of insulating substances as well as metal soot and primarily of multi-component mixtures of both material classes with each other and with each other.
Thanks to the perfected vacuum technology and the use of high-purity noble gases (mostly He) instead of atmospheric low-pressure gas, Pfund's technology was subsequently developed into a widely used method with which high-purity networks can also be produced from thermally evaporable non-metals and can also be sealed under high vacuum [2]. Fig. 1a outlines the principle of this preparation method - sometimes less precisely - referred to as "noble gas condensation" in the literature. The process is technologically and economically more complex than others (e.g. the precipitation method for the production of catalytic blacks such as Pt black), but provides samples with less contamination and can therefore also be used on non-noble metals and other reactive substances. It is initially reserved for small-volume samples with a special technological function.
Another crucial advantage of the modified Pfund method is in that not only one-element networks can be prepared, but - using several evaporators also mixtures of any solid Let substances be created. The evaporators can both with Joule heat (High current heating) as well as with high power lasers (Electron beam evaporation is too expensive because of the residual gas in the recipient and prone to failure).
Metal soot and networks made of insulating nanocrystals tend to agglomerate on the one hand and are characterized by their remarkably low density on the other. The latter is characterized using the fill factor f; which is defined as the ratio (intrinsic volume of the crystals) / (total volume of the network) and therefore is a pure number 0 <f <1. Natural networks, such as those generated by the method Fig. 1a, have typical f values of a few percent (f ∼ 0.01... 0.05). The compacting of networks to nanocrystalline solids (f → 1) was already proposed in 1984 [3] and is not the subject of the present patent. Compacted into bulk material, nanocrystals represent an economically and technically complex class of solids. This is specifically about the state of the loose network (or network mixture) with low fill factors f <0.3. This includes the area of reversible compression of the networks if the desired application so requires. Reversible compression means that the networks can be brought back to the lowest density state by suitable influences (in the simplest case, for example, shaking or electrostatic separation). This means that the networks are preferably in a vacuum or in a gas. For special applications, it is also intended to be embedded in a liquid matrix. Applications of networks that are embedded in a solid or highly viscous matrix are covered by other patents.
With the low natural density of the networks and their strong tendency to Agglomeration is accompanied by other characteristic properties: the "necks" their dimensions naturally lie between neighboring nanocrystals below 10 nm or even below 1 nm. This gives you structures like this with conventional nanotechnology (e.g. lithography) not or not yet can be generated. Here there are statistically distributed (instead of ordered) Structures, but they can be created with much less effort. For effects in which only the dimension of the structure and not its degree of order what is decisive is that networks form with their loose coupling and with it associated advantages ideal applications. The interaction between neighboring nanocrystals are described in the literature as reinforced Van der Waals Attraction interpreted [4] and responsible for the tendency towards agglomeration made. The geometric constraints in a statistical bed of Nanocrystals with a sufficiently high melting point prevent the formation of denser ones Structures (f <0.05) when only Van der Waals attraction and gravity act. Considerable external pressure is required to form a nanocrystalline solid (<10 GPa) required. The loose structure of the networks brings little thermal and, in the case of metal soot, also low electrical Conductivity with itself. It is obvious that these properties are positive e.g. B. on the signal yield in thermocouples or thermoelectric converters impact.
Comparative measurements of the dielectric function ε = ε 1 + i ε 2 of systems with matrix-isolated nanocrystals and of nanocrystal networks have shown that the degree of agglomeration has a decisive influence on the frequency and temperature response ε (ν) and ε (T): Both are in isolated nanocrystals Dependencies are strikingly weak, while networks show the expected dependence ε 2 (ν) ∼ ν -1 for metals [2]. A significant influence of the fill factor f on ε was also found for networks: ε 1 and ε 2 rise sharply within the range of reversible compression and the temperature dependence of ε 2 (and thus that of conductivity) changes its sign (δε 2 / δT <0 ) [2]. In the case of carrier-free networks (those that are in a vacuum or in a selected gas), f can easily be changed in both directions. It is thus possible to control the dielectric function of the networks and all of the resulting properties within certain limits. Possible influences on the filling factor f of the networks and thus the contact between the particles are mechanical, electrical, thermal and - in the case of ferromagnetic nanocrystals - also magnetic effects.
Embedded in a gaseous (or conditionally also low-viscosity liquid) matrix or In high vacuum, the fill factor of the networks can also be used for contact between the particles within the range of reversible compression for make specific applications usable. The possibilities include mechanical, electrical, thermal and - if ferromagnetic nanocrystals are used - also magnetic effects with which the networks from the outside can be influenced. Public address, acceleration and externally applied Pressure are examples of mechanical interference.
Electrical or electromagnetic interference includes electrostatic Interactions, radiation with electromagnetic waves including the Light, ultraviolet and shorter-wave radiation.
Die Nanokristallnetzwerke bestehen wahlweiseThe aim of the invention is the representation and use of nanocrystal networks and multi-component network mixtures as sensors, detectors and thermoelectric converters. The samples can be melted in quartz ampoules under high vacuum or with a suitable gas / gas mixture or be in a liquid, as shown in Fig. 1b. Quartz ampoules with suitable vacuum-tight contact bushings are of particular interest because of their thermal insensitivity and their optical properties. The nanocrystal networks are optional

The mixtures are produced using the technique modified for several simultaneous evaporator sources according to Fig. 1a. Unconventional nanocrystalline mixtures ("forced sealing") and their technical application are primarily the subject of the present patent. The contacting and shaping of the networks can be adapted to the requirements in question. All networks should be stored (in vacuum, gas or gas mixture, liquid or liquid mixture) in such a way that their fill factors and the properties associated with them can be controlled within reversible limits by external influences. Solid elements are all elements and compounds which, because of their sufficiently high melting temperature at room temperature, form stable nanocrystal networks if they are produced using the method outlined in Fig. 1a. The mixing ratios of multi-component networks can be controlled via the evaporation rate of the individual thermal sources and are to be determined empirically for the respective application.

Fig. 1a Sketch of Pfund's technology for the production of nanocrystals and nanocrystal networks from solid substances (metals are given as examples), which are vaporized in the presence of a low-pressure residual gas (e.g. helium with pressures below 1 kPa). Ohmic high-current heating and high-power lasers are primarily considered as thermal evaporation methods. Interatomic collisions with the residual gas atoms cool the metal vapor to a supersaturated state and homogeneous nucleation creates nanocrystals in the recipient space, the size of which is essentially determined by the evaporation rate and the residual gas pressure. By convection from the hot evaporator to colder surfaces in the recipient, the nanocrystals are mainly deposited on the polished surface of a hanging cold trap, which is kept at 77 K with liquid nitrogen. The vacuum recipient (not shown) comprises the parts of the apparatus shown. After the evaporation and condensation process has ended, the nanocrystal networks (e.g. soot) deposited on the cold trap can be placed in a quartz tube ( Fig. 1b) using a glass funnel (a ring membrane made of thin Teflon film has proven useful) . conduct. Alternatively, high vacuum can be restored before stripping. Several independent evaporators are installed to generate unconventional nanocrystal mixtures. The mixing ratio of the chemically different network components is then determined by the individual evaporation rates.
Fig. 1b Detailed view of the z. B. via a commercial compression fitting and a corrugated hose flexibly suspended glass container (preferably quartz glass). If necessary, two or four thin metal wires are melted into the ampoule as contacts in a highly vacuum-tight manner, part of the contacts running through the bore of a glass cylinder in the manner shown, which is brought from an oblique side arm of the glass vessel to the network below by tilting the flexible arrangement can to put the contact directly on the nanocrystals. Magnetic manipulation with appropriate stamps is also conceivable. After completing this procedure, the quartz tube is sealed in a vacuum-tight manner (indicated by the arrows). The weight stamp is used later in the gravitational field of the earth or by means of technical acceleration also for contact-free change of the network fill factor. This arrangement shown by way of example is to be modified accordingly for the respective purpose.
