Description
The invention relates to a method for System optimization of fiber optic transmission links when commissioning with a transceiver both ends of the route.
In the optical transmission of signals, in particular of digital signals in the baseband via optical fibers several factors influencing the planning of the Transmission links to take into account the respective To optimally meet system requirements. To the System requirements count in the event of a transfer from Digital signals especially the data rate for a safe Transmission, i.e. a still permissible bit error rate or the required signal-to-noise ratio as well as the permissible Pulse width distortion. At a given Distance range that corresponds to the transmission path to be bridged, a predetermined damping of the Optical fiber at the respective optical Wavelength and additional losses due to detachable and then non-detachable connections must be for a given Receiver sensitivity a certain optical Transmission power can be achieved.
On the other hand, because of the limited Dynamic range of the receiver the signal power at their Input does not get too high to cause clipping effects avoid. If, for example, transmission systems with very high demands on low bit distortion both in Distance range of meters as well as kilometers of use the dynamic range of the receiver is sufficient even with a lot of effort for automatic control circuits no longer out. A limited remedy could be found by manually setting the transmission power in for example, reach two or three levels. The planning and attitude is complicated by the fact that both optical transmitter as well as the optical receiver and scatter also occurs in the transmission components and also changes during operation are expected, for example due to Temperature fluctuations and aging of components.
With regard to the influencing factors explained in the planning of transmission systems is not fully known may be, and in view of the possible changes in the Operation need considerable system reserves when planning be provided at a certain transmission distance guarantee under compliance with the system requirements can. In practice it often turns out that because of the Planning uncertainties a much greater distance could be bridged. However, this would be in individual cases A technical check is required in each case. However, that is complex, because in general a delivered Transmission system only need to be installed.
In this well-known The process begins during an initialization phase a signal with full power in a first transmitter unit generated. A second transmitter unit has the lowest performance effective. Then the transmission power becomes the second Sending unit increased continuously until this triggered reception signal in the first transmission unit assigned receiving unit a sufficient Has reception level. The change in the transmission power of the second transmission unit is carried out on repeated request of first transmission unit until the assigned to it Level monitoring device a sufficiently high Received level and no increase in transmission power requests more.
To use this transmission system both Sender and receiver always in an optimal range To be able to operate is an optical one at the receiving end Power meter and an evaluation device arranged, the output signals of the evaluation device via a Return channel can be fed to a laser transmitter. The Evaluation device always generates output signals when the receive level has an upper or lower threshold exceeds or falls below. The fed to the laser transmitter Output signal then ensures that the transmission power is raised or lowered accordingly.
The invention is accordingly based on the object To provide method for system optimization, which for Setting the transmission power of the respective transceiver uses less energy and is easy to use Commissioning changes the respective transmission power.
This object is achieved with the method according to claim 1.
When installing such an optical fiber Transmission route and preferably later for each So commissioning is in both directions of transmission, who generally use separate optical fibers, the optical transmission power selected just high enough that the system requirements are met. Because as an optical Transmitters generally light emitting diodes or semiconductor lasers to be used, the respective driver current does not have to be unnecessarily high, so that the life of these components is significantly extended can be. At the same time changes the Operating parameters taken into account, so always safe asked that the system requirements are met at the Transmission of digital signals the specified bit error rate is not exceeded.
The requirements for the recipient in particular with regard to their dynamic range and thus the required Effort is reduced. The same applies to others Components on the transmission path, for example Coupling elements because of possible scatter, Temperature changes, aging influences and the like. can be compensated. The bridgeable distance increases in the desired manner because of the to be planned Collateral can be much smaller. On the other However, the distance can also be very small because Oversteer of the receiver are safely avoided.
Developments of the invention are the subject of Subclaims. So the change in transmit power continuous at maximum signal transmission power, for example maximum bit rate. But is possible also a gradual change in transmission power, namely always within specified maximum limits. The first Signal that the achievement of the system requirements in reports the respective receiver back to the respective transmitter, can in the simplest case by such an increase in Transmission power take place that the receiver is overridden.
The invention is based on a Embodiment in connection with the drawings described.

Fig. 1 den prinzipiellen Aufbau einer Lichtwellenleiter- Übertragungsstrecke mit zwei Sendeempfängern; Figure 1 shows the basic structure of an optical fiber transmission link with two transceivers.
Fig. 2 is a flow diagram for a system optimization according to the invention.
Referring to FIG. 1, two optical transceivers 1, 2 connected to each other via optical fibers 3, 4 in both transmission directions. The optical waveguides 3 , 4 consist of optical fibers of a known type and contain splice points, plug connections and, in the case of greater distances, also intermediate amplifiers in a manner not shown in detail. The digital data to be transmitted are fed to the transceiver 1 , 2 via data inputs 5 and 7, respectively. The data then arrive at signal conditioning circuits 8 and 9, respectively. There is pulse formation, possibly reformatting and level adjustment. Subsequently, the data to be transmitted are each fed to an electrical-optical converter 10 , 11 and then transmitted to the other transceiver via the respective optical waveguide 3 , 4 . After conversion back into electrical signals in an optical-electrical converter 12 or 13 , the signals pass through a signal conditioning circuit 14 or 15 at the receiving end and are then available at signal output 16 or 17 .
Fig. 2 erläutert schematisch die Verfahrensabläufe. Fig. 2 schematically illustrates the procedures. The transceivers 1 , 2 are referred to as "module A" and "module B" for simplicity. In order to indicate that the one transceiver 1 , 2 or the one module A, B takes over the control of the setting process, this module is referred to as the "master" and the other module as the "slave". Switching can take place in such a way that the other module becomes the "master" or "slave". In the simplest case, the switchover or recoding is carried out using a mechanical switch 20 , as shown in FIG. 2. In the position shown, module A is the master and module B is the slave.
After commissioning in accordance with block 21 and selection of the position of the switch 20 in accordance with block 22 , module A becomes the master in accordance with block 23 and module B in accordance with block 24 becomes the slave. In accordance with block 25, module A then changes its optical transmission power either continuously or in steps. In module B, the received signal is checked in accordance with block 26 to determine whether it corresponds to a predetermined reference signal. If this is the case, the first signal is transmitted in the form of information B to the master in accordance with block 27 . Upon receipt of the information B in accordance with block 28, the latter sends the second signal in the form of information C in accordance with block 29 to the slave, which, when the information C in accordance with block 30 is received, switches over by means of the switch 20 , ie module B becomes the master and module A to the slave. The transmission power is then set in module B. The associated blocks are correspondingly labeled 25 ', 26', 27 ', 28'. At the end of the setting process, the connections can then be switched optically and electrically in accordance with blocks 31 and 32 in both directions.
