bzw. ARROW-Fasern verwendet. Mit dem Bauelement lassen
sich folgende Operationen ausführen: Schalten, Verstärken, Begrenzen, logisches
Verknüpfen. The invention relates to an optically non-linear, planar component that
is applicable as a building block for an optical computer. Other areas of application
are optical communication technology and integrated optics,
especially if instead of the planar ARROW structures, Rib (ARROW's)
or ARROW fibers are used. Leave with the component
the following operations are carried out: switching, amplifying, limiting, logical
Link.
Baba, Y. Kokubun, T. Sakaki, K. Iga; J. of Lightw. Techn. 6 (1988) 1440).
Lineare und nichtlinieare Kopplergeometrien aus herkömmlichen Schichtwellenleitern,
Ribwellenleitern und Fasern wurden theoretisch und experimentell
sehr intensiv untersucht (siehe z. B. G. I. Stegeman u. a. J. of Lightw. Techn. 6
(1988) 953).Planar linear ARROW structures are known and have already been developed
manufactured and their properties investigated experimentally (see e.g .: T.

Linear and non-linear coupler geometries from conventional layer waveguides,
Rib waveguides and fibers have been theoretically and experimentally
examined very intensively (see e.g. G. I. Stegeman et al. J. of Lightw. Techn. 6
(1988) 953).
Lineare Kopplergeometrien bestehend aus Bragg-Wellenleitern wurden kürzlich
vorgeschlagen und theoretisch untersucht (siehe z. B. G. Lenz, J. Salzman

proposed and theoretically examined (see e.g. G. Lenz, J. Salzman

Linear and non-linear coupler geometries from planar ARROW's, Rib-ARROW's
and ARROW fibers have not yet been examined.
planaren Anordnung nach Anspruch 1 und 2.The invention has for its object a planar optical component
to realize what an almost complete coupling of energy
from a shaft-guiding system to one or more other shaft-guiding systems
Systems permitted, regardless of how far the wave-guiding
Systems are apart. Related to that
there is the requirement that the coupling length L does not increase with distance
of the wave-guiding dielectric layers extreme (exponential)
grows. According to the invention, this object is achieved with a
planar arrangement according to claims 1 and 2.
steuerbar. The invention is also based on the object with an arrangement
a planar optical component with the operations switching, amplification,
Limit to realize logical connection. The solution to this task
succeeds according to the invention with a planar arrangement according to claim 3
and 5. By varying the input intensity of the guided electromagnetic
After the fixed propagation length L, wave is the initial intensity
in the different ARROW's dynamically as a function of the input intensity
controllable.
ARROW A bezeichneten Eingangskanal geschickt.
Würde man
The simplest structure consisting of two ARROWs according to Fig. 1 is considered to illustrate the functioning of the planar optical component. The arrangement consists of alternating dielectric layers (glass with n = 1.53 and e.g. a polymer with n = 1.69). The coupling was simulated at a wavelength of 1.06 µm and is shown in Fig. 2. A Gaussian bundle was sent into the input channel labeled ARROW A in Fig. 1. Complete coupling into the ARROW B output channel is achieved after around 4 mm, although the two ARROWs are 15 µm apart. If you were to implement a coupler with conventional waveguides of the same distance, complete coupling would only take place after many kilometers. A coupling would therefore practically not be possible.
If materials with self-focusing or defocusing non-linearity are used for the dielectric layers, a planar optical component with the above-mentioned functions is obtained. The "Switch" function is shown in Fig. 3. By increasing the input intensity in channel A, the output signal can be switched from channel A to channel B according to the fixed coupling length. The steepness of the switching curve in comparison to an equivalent waveguide coupler (same refractive indices, same non-linearity and same coupling length) is remarkable.
