Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a microwave method with which Fiber materials or in fiber composite materials the local average orientation of the fibers can be characterized.
Not only natural materials (e.g. wood), but also Textile materials (e.g. fabrics, felt) and reinforced polymers contain fibers whose tensile strength exceeds the failure limits of the material. Glass or carbon fibers cause, for example, the high strength of modern poly mer materials. With a suitable fiber orientation, a certain preferred direction he particularly high strength aims. Deviations from this orientation - even if they only available locally, e.g. B. in the weld line of reinforced Injection molded parts - cause a loss of strength that can lead to component failure and consequential damage.
Quality assurance is responsible for detection and evaluation of component weaknesses. Characterization of the local fiber Orientation is therefore a job of quality assurance only perform non-destructively on the usable component lead is.
With the growing use of polymer composites also increases the urgency of these investigations and the effort to do the destructive fiber analysis (i.e. cutting of the material and statistical analysis of the elliptical Replace fiber gates) with non-destructive processes, which, for example, correlated with the preferred fiber direction take advantage of thermal or dielectric anisotropy. The former require a high expenditure on equipment (laser excitation and thermographic temperature field analysis). Reduce the latter refer to a frequency range in which the materials go are sufficiently transparent and in which polarization effects are observed, essentially in the microwave range.
It is known that microwaves are successfully used for determining e.g. B. the moisture content of paper and other fiber materials are used (J. Kalinski, Feingerätetechnik 23, 11 (1974)), recently also for the investigation of fiber orientation (S. Osaki, J. Appl. Phys. 64, 4181 (1988)). This research but use a waveguide and resonator technology, i.e. one closed arrangement, based on the geometry of the test specimen film-like specimens of limited size.
The object of the invention is to limit this avoid and non-destructive investigation more general and practical geometries right down to the component. The object is achieved according to the invention by Characteristic features of claim 1. Further developments of inventive method, facilities for its through leadership and applications are specified in the subclaims.
The method according to the invention is based on the fact that, according to Figure 1, a quasi-optical design of the microwave measuring section is used to detect the fiber orientation via the dielectric anisotropy associated with it. This measuring section is rotatably arranged as a transmission or reflection arrangement. In the case of a non-statistical distribution of the fiber directions (preferred direction), the reflection and transmission of the material area located behind the pinhole depend on the angle of rotation α, with a change of α by 360 ° corresponding to two periodicity cycles of the detector signal profiles. The direction of the fibers results from the angles at which the extremes occur. Because of noise and standing wave effects, however, a Fourier analysis of the signal profiles is more sensible: The phase angle determined from real and imaginary Fourier components indicates the fiber direction, whereby it should be noted that there is a phase shift of 90 ° between the transmission and reflection results. The amount of modulation formed from the components, based on the mean signal level, is a measure of the degree of orientation of the fibers. The aperture causes a local limitation of the investigation area, so that one- or two-dimensional grid-like scanning operations are possible, for. B. for detection and assessment of the anisotropy change in the weld line or gate area. The decision about transmission or reflection measurements is made according to the peculiarities of the test object. With CFRP materials, the reflection arrangement is usually more suitable, which also has the advantage that it allows the examination of hollow bodies.
Verschiedene Modifikationen können die Ergebnisse verbessern:Various modifications can improve the results:
With weak absorption and reflection, the accuracy can be Increase the speed of the orientation angle measurement in that a mirror is placed behind the test specimen at a suitable distance is brought so that the reflection arrangement also transmissions shares recorded with double sample run.
The arrangement presented is suitable for larger samples and Components whose rotation would be more complex than that of the transmitter / Receiver arrangement. For smaller objects to be examined the relative orientation preferably ver by object rotation changes.
The measurements are based on the fact that the interaction of the microwaves with fiber-like material deposits depends on the direction of polarization, which is changed in Figure 1 by rotation relative to the test object. If the polarization direction is controlled by other devices, there is no need for mechanical rotation. This can shorten the measuring time (currently approx. 30 s) and simplify the construction of the apparatus.
Es zeigenIn the following the invention is based on the sketch of an example stick measuring and testing device as well as on the basis of measurement curves purifies. Show it

Fig. 2 zeigt solche Ergebnisse eines uniaxialen CFK- Laminats. In the measuring device according to FIG. 1, the microwave radiation emitted by the transmitter S strikes the sample located behind the slide provided with a pinhole. Detector E 1 , detector E 2 accordingly detects the transmitted radiation from this reflected radiation. The sample can be moved in a grid-like manner by a displacement device in order to identify defective areas. When the angle α is rotated, the relative orientation of the electric field strength vector with respect to the fibers changes, since the transmission and reflection signals of samples with partial fiber orientation depend on α. Fig. 2 shows results of a uniaxial such CFRP laminate. The maxima in the reflection curve R occur when the fibers are predominantly parallel to the field strength vector, correspondingly the maxima in the transmission curve T when oriented perpendicularly thereto. The associated angle shows the fiber direction. Fig. 3 shows a corresponding measurement for a GFK material. Here the anisotropy is less pronounced, but still clearly recognizable. Because of the signal structure, the direction should not be determined by reading the extrema, but by Fourier analysis, in which the entire course of the curve is used to determine the angle.
