Bei größeren Abdichtungsflächen muß die Abdichtung deshalb aus einzelnen Bahnen zusammengesetzt werden. Die Bahnen werden überlappend verlegt und an den Überlappungsrändern verschweißt. Die häufigste Art der Verschweißung ist die thermische Verschweißung, bei der die Schweißflächen durch Wärmeeinwirkung plastifiziert und aneinandergedrückt werden. In früherer Zeit waren die Schweißgeräte so ausgelegt, daß sie den Schweißdruck mit ihrem Gewicht aufbringen konnten. Diese Schweißgeräte wurden jedoch durch solche Geräte abgelöst, die mit einem Schwanenhals - einem S-förmigen Maschinenteil - zwischen den Bahnenrändern hindurch unter den unten liegenden Bahnenrand greifen. Das unter den unteren Bahnenrand grei fende Ende des Maschinenteils bildet ein Widerlager, das in Grenzen beliebige Anpreßkräfte aufnimmt. Auf diesem Wege konnten annähernd gleichmäßige Schweißnähte erzielt werden. Das Untergreifen des unter liegenden Bahnenrandes hat jedoch auch Nachteile.
