Description
The invention relates to the use of a tool steel for tools for pressing body panels for motor vehicles with a specific chemical composition.
A wide variety of steel grades are used today for pressing tools for automotive body panels, including high-alloy steels, such as SIS 2310 grade steels with the nominal composition 1.55 C, 0.30 Si, 0.25 Mn, 12.0 Cr, 0.80 Mo, 0.80 V, balance iron, but also steels with medium or relatively low content of alloying elements. Among the latter, firstly, mention should be made of the steel grade SIS 2260 with the nominal composition 1.00 C, 0.15 Si, 0.60 Mn, 5.3 Cr, 1.1 Mo, 0.20 V, balance iron, and the steel grade sold under the trade name UHB FERMO with the nominal composition 0.48 C, 0.40 Si, 0.90 Mn, 1.50 Cr, balance iron and impurities. When the requirement of high wear resistance is critical for the selection of the steel grade, steels of the type SIS 2260, which is most similar to the steel of the present inventions, are used first, while UHB FERMO is used when good flame hardening properties and good toughness of the steel are critical factors. It is a disadvantage that not one and the same steel grade meets the high demands regarding wear resistance, flame hardening properties and toughness, because the storage of a number of steel grades increases the overall costs.
In JP 59-118857 a steel alloy is proposed as a backup roll material, which consists essentially of 0.50-0.60 C, ≤ 1.0 Si, ≤ 1.0 Mn 4.60- 5.50 Cr, 0.40-0.50 Mo, 0.10-0.30 V and other impurities and iron as the remainder.
It is an object of the invention to propose the use of a tool steel whose characteristics are better adapted to the requirements for the use of tool steel for pressing tools for body panels of motor vehicles than known types of steel used for this purpose today. In particular, it is intended to propose the use of a tool steel suitable for large, cast tools for punching body panels in the motor vehicle industry. More particularly, it is intended to propose the use of a tool steel which can be used as a universal material in this technical field, the concept of "universal material" implying that the steel should have a higher wear resistance combined with good toughness, especially at cutting edges, which are characteristics that are characteristic properties of the two tool steels that are currently the dominant materials for pressing tools for body panels of motor vehicles. It should be possible to cast the tools in large dimensions and it should be possible to use them in the as-cast state after a suitable flame hardening treatment. The flame hardening properties should be suitable, which includes a relatively low flame hardening temperature and a wide flame hardening temperature range, which imparts the desired hardness to the surface layer of the tool with high accuracy.
Furthermore, the steel should be easy to harden, ie it should be trough hardenable even in large dimensions, and the maximum hardening temperature should suitably be lower than 1,020ºC. In addition to flame hardenability, it is also desirable that the steel be induction hardenable and particularly preferably also CVD-coatable and/or nitridable. However, good flame-hardening properties are more important than the possibility of CVD-coating the tool or nitriding it.
Another object is that the steel and the tool made from the steel have good dimensional stability against heat and that the dimensional changes that can occur during conventional hardening do not lead to shrinkage of the tool.
Yet another object is that the steel is easily weldable, so that the tool made of this steel can be repaired by welding without preheating.
Apart from the above objects, the steel should have only a moderate content of alloying elements, among other things for cost reasons.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention may be attained by characterizing the invention by what is described in the appended claims and in the following description of a preferred embodiment and in the following report of the results achieved.
Die untersuchten Stähle hatten die folgende nominelle Zusammensetzung (Rest Eisen und Verunreinigungen und Spurenelemente in normalen Mengen): Tabelle 1 Zusammensetzung, Gew.-% Stahl No.The steels examined had the following nominal composition (residual iron and impurities and trace elements in normal amounts): Table 1 Composition, wt.% Steel No.
From steels No. 1-5 with the above-mentioned nominal compositions, 50 kg ingots were prepared and test specimens (test bars) were made from these ingots. The test bars were hardened by heating to various temperatures between 900ºC and 1,050ºC for 30 minutes and then cooling in air. The hardnesses achieved are graphically shown in the diagram in the drawing. Due to the small dimensions of the test bars, the hardening process can be considered as a measure of the flame hardening properties, which correspond to the conditions of the flame hardening process. The best values in this regard were achieved with steel No. 2, which also satisfies the other desired properties of the steel according to the invention. The composition of steel No. 2 therefore corresponds to the nominal composition of the steel according to the invention. In the diagram, corresponding graphs were also made for the commercially available reference steels No. 6 and 7.
It is a characteristic feature of the steel according to the invention, as best represented by steel No. 2, that a high and substantially constant hardness is achieved within a wide temperature range. In particular, a hardness between 61 and 63 HRC is achieved by hardening over the entire temperature range of 950-1,050ºC. Without the Without limiting the scope of the invention to any particular theory, as far as the reasons for the results achieved are concerned, there is a sufficient basis for believing that the results have been achieved by the fact that:
- eine verhältnismäßig niedrige Carbidstabilität (stability) erreicht wurde, die eine schnelle Lösung der Carbide und eine hohe Härte im Falle niedriger Austenitisiertemperaturen ermöglicht;- a relatively low carbide stability has been achieved, which enables rapid dissolution of the carbides and high hardness in the case of low austenitizing temperatures;
- der Gehalt an Carbid-bildenden Elementen niedrig ist und der Kohlenstoff-Gehalt daran angepaßt ist, der zwischen 0,5 und 0,7 %, vorzugsweise zwischen 0,55 und 0,65 % liegen sollte, so daß ein vergleichsweise hoher Kohlenstoff-Gehalt nach dem Härten in fester Lösung vorliegt; wenn der Kohlenstoff-Gehalt zu niedrig ist, wird keine ausreichende Härte erzielt, und wenn der Kohlenstoff-Gehalt zu hoch ist, wird der Stahl zu hart und demzufolge auch zu spröde, wobei gleichzeitig die Härte eng von der Flammhärte-Temperatur abhängt, was bedeutet, daß der Temperaturbereich, innerhalb dessen die gewünschte Härte erreichbar ist, zu eng ist;- the content of carbide-forming elements is low and the carbon content is adapted to this, which should be between 0.5 and 0.7%, preferably between 0.55 and 0.65%, so that a comparatively high carbon content is present after hardening in solid solution; if the carbon content is too low, sufficient hardness is not achieved, and if the carbon content is too high, the steel becomes too hard and consequently too brittle, at the same time the hardness is closely dependent on the flame hardening temperature, which means that the temperature range within which the desired hardness can be achieved is too narrow;
Stickstoff ist ein starker Austenit-Bildner, sollte aber nicht in Mengen über 0,1 % vorhanden sein, um den Stahl nicht spröde zu machen.- the content of strong ferrite forming elements (Si and Mo) is low and the content of austenite stabilising elements (Mn and/or Mi) is relatively high, which together with carbon primarily depresses the A₁ line and thereby increases the austenite range compared to the known steels No. 6 and 7 in Table 1. On the other hand, the Si content should be sufficiently high, but not higher than 1.0%, for good fluidity during casting. The Mo content should not be higher than 0.8%, while Ni + (Mn/2) should be between 0.3 and 1.8%. However, the steel should contain at least 0.8% Mn. Nitrogen is a strong austenite former, but should not be present in quantities exceeding 0.1% in order to avoid making the steel brittle.
Steel No. 4 also has good flame hardening properties, but the hardness level is not as high as steel No. 2. Steel No. 3 also has good flame hardening properties in that a hardness of over 60 HRC is already achieved when hardening at a temperature of 950-1,000ºC. However, the hardness decreases when hardening at higher temperatures, which is a disadvantage. As far as steel No. 4 is concerned, it is also a disadvantage that the through hardening ability is impaired primarily due to the lower chromium content. This is also true to a certain extent for steel No. 3. Steel No. 6, which corresponds to the grade SIS 2260, is very hard but has poor flame hardening properties, which is also shown in the graph in the figure, and steel No. 7, which corresponds to the well-known steel grade UHB FERMO, has a lower hardness but better flame hardening properties, which is also shown in the graph.
