Abstract

Gases from a multicylinder engine (1) are led through a chamber (8) which may be a combined absorption/reflection silencer. Between this and a catalytic converter (9), the flow through an intermediate tubular section (4) is throttled by a rotary valve (10) operated by a stepper motor (12) in a control circuit (13). An angular position sensor (15) associated with the crankshaft supplies signals to a compensatory network (17), which receives inputs also from the ignition circuit (18) and a reference cylinder TDC sensor (19). The position of the stepper motor (12) is detected (16) and fed back to the compensatory network (17).
