Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a safety device for an electrochemical cell according to the preamble of the claim 1 and a method according to the preamble of the claim 13.
The term cell is also intended to mean an entire cell cluster or a cell Include battery. Preferably, the Safety device for a lithium thionyl chloride cell applied will.
The melting point of lithium is only 179 degrees Celsius. Melts lithium due to an unscheduled temperature increase hung the cell, there can be between the lithium anode and the Result in an internal short circuit leading to a violent Reaction and, as a result, rupture of the cell cup can lead. A similarly violent reaction can also occur between Lithium and the non-aqueous electrolytes take place since lithium not thermodynamic here, but only because of a difficult soluble protective film on the lithium surface, made of reak tion products between lithium and the electrolyte solutions results and another reaction between lithium and the Prevents electrolytes from being stable. If the enamel is exceeded The point of lithium is the effect of this protective film impaired, and there may be a violent reaction. The strong heat development caused by such reactions leads to such a strong increase in pressure that the cup burst can. These problems are particularly severe with high-current cells large electrode surface. Not yet bursting at one To cause excessive pressure, it is known to break points built into the cell cup or cell lid or rupture discs to weld, which at a certain pressure, for example it corresponds to an elevated temperature of 100 degrees Celsius, break. With larger cells or batteries you also have Pressure relief valves installed.
These safety devices are in the event of external short circuits relatively effective, but not for the internal ones mentioned above Short circuits that may only occur during discharge occur in a cell and cannot be determined during manufacture are. Such internal short circuits can be such a quick local Overheating of the cell and thus such a rapid increase in pressure condition that a built-in predetermined breaking point or an overpressure valve does not respond quickly enough to cause an explosion prevent. This risk exists particularly with larger cells or batteries where the location is subject to local overheating Under certain circumstances, be far from the built-in predetermined breaking point can.
In addition, predetermined breaking points or pressure relief valves have the Disadvantage that electrolyte vapors are released in an uncontrolled manner, which also leads to corrosion of corrosive electrolytes components surrounding the cell, e.g. B. Electronic components.
DE-OS 36 33 385 relates to a galvanic cell a soluble electrode, a cathodic discharge electrode and a liquid electrolyte effective as a depolarizer, in which a circulation device for an electrolyte between the opposite surfaces of the soluble electrode and the impermeable lead electrode is provided. A However, a safety device is not provided. DE-PS 29 39 667 describes a battery which is similar in construction, in which common container between the cells an elastic material is arranged, which contains certain chemical substances that react with the components escaping from the cells and neutralize them. It is therefore a neutralizing one Wrapping the cell in without any control Dependence on certain extreme battery states that occur the.
Dort sind jedoch keine Maßnahmen für den Fall plötzlich auftretender Gefahrensituationen, die zur Explosion führen könnten, vorgese hen, um eine Explosion und dergleichen zu verhindern.EP-OS 02 94 553 has a cell of similar construction, in a circulation valve via a control valve and a heat exchanger tion device with temperature control is provided. There are however, no action in the event of sudden occurrence Dangerous situations that could lead to the explosion hen to prevent an explosion and the like.
The US-PS 46 37 928 deals with safe disposal used lithium batteries, mechanical and chemical Process steps are combined.
The invention is based on the technical problem Security device according to the preamble of claim 1 so to design that even with internal short circuits a quick Addressing enabled and bursting is prevented.
The technical problem is solved according to the invention by the features of the characterizing part of claim 1 and claim 13, respectively. Further embodiments of the invention are in the dependent claims under protection.
The basic principle is in facilities that are capable of critical conditions of the electrochemical cell to remove the electrolyte from the cell as quickly as possible.
This removal of the electrolyte takes place via at least one Discharge valve and in practice at least one additional opening, this actually makes it possible for the electrolyte to flow out is.
Preferably inert gas under pressure is in the shortest Time introduced into the cell, with the cell electrolyte over at least one drain valve is quickly pressed outwards. The The electrolyte is expediently placed in an electrolyte container introduced. In a further stage you can create a complete closed electrolyte circuit between cell, electrolyte container and put it back to the cell. Can in this cycle to use a reusable valve from which the same line on the one hand for the supply of electrolyte, and in the event of a disaster for rapid introduction of the pressurized inert gas into the Cell is used.
Different taps, valves, pumps, pressure gauges, Temperature sensors, pressure relief valves, additional predetermined breaking points be arranged on the cell and storage container etc. These cocks and valves can be mechanical, pneumatic or electrical or act electromagnetically, you can manually or via a Control and regulating device can be operated automatically.
By quickly removing the electrolyte solution from a cell or battery, the current flow is suddenly interrupted, so that consequently, high short-circuit currents can no longer flow. This also prevents the cell from overheating, so that no critical overpressure can arise or uncontrolled reactions could take place. This draining of the The entire system also works in the event of an internal local short circuit the cell, bursting or exploding of the cell takes effect prevented.
Suitable valve arrangements prevent the Electrolyte into the cell, the inert gas under pressure can also be like the electrolyte over the electrolyte tank and for example, a pressure relief valve can be discharged. Suitable Inert gases for lithium cells are, for example, dried air, Noble gases such as argon or nitrogen and other inert gases Gases.
The cell is emptied particularly well and quickly Intermittent switching on and off of the gas supply achieved.
An electrolyte circuit can also be used for normal operation ensure a largely uniform electrolyte temperature and thereby dangerous temperature and pressure increases prevent. In this electrolyte cycle is also preferred a heat exchanger installed, depending on the need via a further circuit warms the electrolyte flowing through or usually cools down. Blow out the electrolyte the cell with inert gas has the additional advantage of one Cooling effect. By blowing out at intervals, you can any overpressure that occurs can be reduced.
The whole operation of the safety device can be done with the help of temperature sensors, electronic switches, control units Execute directions and the like fully automatically. This also includes the short-term interval-like sequence the gas supply when blowing out electrolyte etc.
Exemplary embodiments are shown schematically in FIGS. 1 and 2.
Fig. 1 shows an embodiment with a cell operated without circulation of the electrolyte in a schematic representation. The electrochemical cell ( 1 ) is operationally filled with the electrolyte. For emergencies, a collecting container ( 2 ) is connected via a check valve ( 3 ), into which the electrolyte is pressed, if necessary, by means of compressed gas from the gas bottle ( 4 ) via the valve ( 5 ). Excess pressure in the collecting container ( 2 ) is released through the bursting membrane ( 6 ). The control unit ( 7 ) continuously detects the temperature, the pressure and the voltage of the electrochemical cell via the lines ( 8 ), ( 9 ) and ( 10 ) and opens the valve ( 5 ) if permissible values occur via the line ( 11 ) ) with several pulses and at the same time switches the cell off via the switch ( 12 ).
Fig. 2 shows another embodiment in which the electrochemical cell ( 1 ) is operated with constant flow of the electrolyte. The position of the valves and switches shown corresponds to the operating state; when the safety device is triggered, its position is just reversed. The collecting container ( 2 ) here is also a storage container for the electrolyte ( 13 ), and this is conveyed in a circuit by the pump ( 14 ). After exiting the cell ( 1 ), the electrolyte is tempered by a heat exchanger ( 15 ) which is also designed for emergency cooling and then reaches the storage container. It is then sucked in by the pump ( 14 ) via the valve ( 16 ) and conveyed back into the cell ( 1 ) via the line ( 18 ). In addition to the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 1, the temperature in the storage container ( 2 ) and the pump output are monitored by the differential pressure gauge ( 19 ) and the flow meter ( 20 ) with the aid of the control unit ( 7 ). In an emergency, the electrolyte circuit is first interrupted by switching off the pump ( 14 ) via the switch ( 21 ) and by closing the valve ( 16 ). The cell ( 1 ) is emptied by pulsing the valve ( 5 ) by means of gas from the pressure bottle ( 4 ), and after cooling in the heat exchanger ( 15 ), the electrolyte enters the collecting and storage container ( 2 ). In this example, its gas space is relieved of excessive pressure instead of a rupture disc by a valve ( 17 ) actuated by the control unit ( 7 ).
Such a safety device has great flexibility on and can by further measurement, control, comparison and Control devices are supplemented, such as electrical or electro African actuators. It is also electronic Data acquisition with automatic triggering of security device easily feasible. Still it works Device already if (initially) only part of the possibility ten is exhausted.
Finally, the safety device can not only in the case an impending overheating of the cell or battery but also after a normal discharge. This applies for example to a battery with internal, serial Interconnection of battery electrodes. So that safe disassembly and disposal of such a system is ensured, one can also advantageous before the electrolyte from the cell remove and then using a suitably dimensioned Resistance discharge the cell or battery completely, as far as that due to any remaining electrolyte in the Cell is possible. After that, safe disassembly is such Battery systems possible.
The safety device described is in principle for everyone electrochemical cells and batteries, in particular lithium bat terien, applicable. However, it is particularly advantageous for larger systems can be used where the necessary additional equipment are reasonable in relation to the battery size.
