Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a wall, whereby this term is intended to include not only internal and external walls, but also floors and ceilings.
The invention relates in particular to a vertical or horizontal wall (internal wall, external wall, floor or ceiling) comprising composite panels connected to one another by tongue-and-groove joints and uprights (vertical structural uprights or crossbeams) made of sheet metal, preferably made of galvanized iron sheet. The invention is described below with particular reference to an internal wall, but also with reference to an external wall, floor and ceiling.
The invention includes an interior wall comprising uprights made of sheet metal, preferably galvanized iron sheet, and composite panels, connected to one another by tongue-and-groove joints and fixed in rails on the floor, ceiling and side walls. The joint of the panels is formed by a groove in one panel and a tongue in the other panel. A upright made of galvanized iron sheet or other sheet metal extends through the wall opposite the joint. The upright extends between two adjacent panels and defines their boundaries in the central region of the thickness of the panels and therefore has at least one bend. The first bend divides the upright into a web and a flange so that the upright can resist a bending moment and prevents deformation of the wall. In another embodiment, the upright also extends along the inner surface of one of the two panels and supports it.
In a third embodiment, the post is bent over the end of the tongue to increase the moment of mass of the post. The web of the post can be provided with holes for electrical wiring and with molded barbs for carrying insulating materials which Increase the fire resistance of the wall. Cross beams can be provided with special barbs for supporting horizontal panels and the uprights in external walls have a reduced cross-section to reduce the heat flow.
The wall comprises composite panels attached to tracks on the floor and ceiling and side walls, and the panel joint area is connected on one side of the wall to a vertical stud extending through the wall and connected to a vertically extending joint area of adjacent panels on the other side of the wall.
Many attempts have been made to construct such a post from sheet iron and conceal it in the wall. The first type was of U-shaped cross-section, with the flanges adjacent to the inner surface of the panels and the panels being screwed to them, the screw heads creating holes in the surface. The second type includes many embodiments and is characterized by a notch in both panels along the joint area, the sheet iron post forming flanges penetrating both notches. Each post then consists of at least two parts (US-A-2-154,520), three parts (GB-A-1-227,763) or six parts in addition to the screws and the web or shim (US-A-2 412,158).
The main object of the invention is the construction of such a upright, which is in one piece and consists of sheet metal.
In all known types, the notches are cut with a saw blade and therefore their width is a multiple of the thickness of the sheet. To fill the cavity, the sheet is bent so that the flange is doubled and has the same thickness as the width of the notch. This requires increased work and considerable material expenditure, but the main disadvantage is that these supports are difficult to stack for transport. A second aim of the invention is therefore to construct supports that are easy to stack for transport, ie can be stacked compactly, support each other and form a group. This task cannot be achieved, as is clearly evident, by the unbent flanges and notches.
The above-mentioned patents cover composite panels with a notch, wherein one panel is connected to a symmetrical panel on the opposite surface of the wall by means of a stud having a web and a flange, the latter penetrating the notch and connecting the two panels. The connection also involves transferring the forces loading one panel to the other. The stud serves no other purpose. This is clear, for example, in US-A-2 154,520, Fig. 10, where the stud consists of a right and a left part and the right part connects the panels on the right side of the connection area to each other, but has no influence on the panels on the left side. The connection between the plates on the right and those on the left is provided by a connecting rod 18 which exerts a pressure between the upright on the right and that on the left, and the friction resulting from this pressure transmits forces from the plates on the right to those on the left. The ribs 5 and 12 serve the same purpose. It is clear from this that in each connection there are actually two uprights, right and left, and they are connected to each other by the ribs 5, 12 and the connecting rod 18. Based on the disclosure in this patent, the invention includes the following modifications: One upright, the connecting rod 18 and the ribs 12, 5 are saved and the flange thickness in the width of a notch is replaced by a thin iron sheet which is strong enough to transmit the forces.
The present invention relates to a wall (which term, as above, also includes a floor or ceiling) comprising two substantially parallel composite panels AA forming a part of the surface of the wall on each side, and a sheet metal upright, preferably of galvanized iron sheet, with a flange at each end of the cross-section of the upright, each flange being located in a respective notch in the side edge of a composite panel, in which wall each composite panel has, in addition to the notch for the flange of the sheet metal upright in one or other side edge, a groove in one side edge and a corresponding tongue in the opposite side edge.
In use, the side edges with the notches are first connected to the upright of galvanized iron or other sheet metal and then two other plates BB adjacent to the plates AA are connected to them by a tongue and groove joint so that the upright only connects the plates AA but not plate A to plate B, and plate A is connected to plate B by a tongue and groove joint so that a single upright is given with only flanges from one side and plate A is connected to plate B by a frictional tongue and groove joint which makes nailing and connection in the direction of the wall and across the uprights unnecessary.
While in the invention as defined above it is stated that each panel has a groove in one side edge and a corresponding tongue on the other side edge, the invention can of course also be equally applied to a construction in which pairs of composite panels are provided in which one panel of each pair is provided with a groove in one of its opposite side edges and the other panel of each pair is provided with a tongue on each of the opposite side edges. Also, in practice, the notch may comprise the groove or part of the groove formed in the side edge of the panel. Alternatively, the notch may be formed in the composite panel separately from the groove, in which case the notch is preferably formed in the side edge of the panel on which the tongue is provided.
The present invention involves connecting the plates on the right hand side (Fig. 1) as before by a post, the flanges of the post penetrating a notch in the plates and thus connecting only the plates on the right hand side. However, instead of connecting the plates on the left hand side in the same way and then connecting the posts together to transmit forces between the parts on the right and left hand sides, the plate on the left hand side is provided with a tongue which penetrates into a corresponding groove in the plate on the right hand side, this groove being the same groove into which the flange of the post penetrates. Therefore, the plates on the left hand side are not directly but indirectly connected to one another by the plates on the right hand side and the post connecting them.
Of course, the composite panel on the right-hand side may be provided with a tongue that enters a corresponding groove in the left-hand panel, even if the panels on the right-hand side are connected to one another by a notch, a flange and a post as before.
It is known to connect surface units by means of tongue-and-groove joints. It is also known to connect two parallel panels by means of a post, the flange of the post penetrating a notch in each panel, but it is not known to connect these panels to adjacent panels by means of a tongue-and-groove joint according to the present invention.
Thus, the upright according to the present invention connects two composite panels and forms a U-shaped wall unit, but the The connection between the wall units is formed by the tongue-and-groove connection and prevents shearing. Completely different components served this purpose in the patents mentioned above.
The invention is thus a new combination comprising, on the one hand, two composite panels with notches and a single upright made of sheet metal with flanges penetrating the notches, whereby the composite panels are connected to one another, and, on the other hand, a tongue-and-groove connection between two such units. The whole is symmetrical with respect to a centre line in the wall and consists of two panels which can themselves be independent, such as a panel on a wall or a ceiling, or in other words, form a single surface rather than a wall with two surfaces.
Increased strength and load-bearing capacity can be achieved by extending the flange further along the inner surface of one of the composite panels, either the panel with the flange notch or the other panel that does not have the notch.
Increased strength can also be achieved by gluing the joint. Since galvanized iron sheet is oily, the surfaces to be bonded must be cleaned of oil to obtain good adhesion.
A web of a sheet iron upright has only a low moment of mass in the direction normal to it and tends to deflect to the compression side under load. The moment of mass can be increased by 45º inclined ribs in the web, preferably by a continuous pattern of crosses, circular bubbles or spheres, circles or even extended holes to prevent bulging under load and to stiffen the web. Bonding the flanges to the plates also prevents deformation and bulging of the web to a considerable extent.
The fire resistance properties of the wall can be improved by using composite panels of fireproof material with bevels to reinforce the thinner parts in the tongues, grooves and notches. The cavity in the middle of the wall can also be filled with fireproof mats or panels connected to the web by barbs that penetrate the mats to support them even if the surface panels are burned or broken.
Advantageously, suitable holes are provided in the upright for electrical wiring or pipes that run horizontally in the wall.
The uprights are stackable and fit together if the angle between the web and the flange is obtuse and its value is v = arc sin t/h, where the angle is 90 plus v, the thickness of the iron sheet is t and the stack height is h. For v = 5º and t = 0.5mm, the stack height is approximately 6mm, saving 75% of the transport volume.
By cleaning the surfaces of the flanges from oil, they can be bonded to the composite panels. In this case, the bonding transfers frictional forces or transverse forces in the longitudinal direction of the post and the mass moment of the composite panels is calculated with respect to the centerline of the wall instead of the centerline of each panel.
The web of the post is thin, giving the post a low moment of mass in that direction and instability under load, deflection and thus reduced strength. This can be improved by deforming the sheet metal from the centerline of the web. For example, balls can be formed sufficiently closely across the entire web on the left and right sides. Crosses, circles or even holes with chamfers have the same effect.
The invention is described in more detail below by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

Figures 1 to 6 are horizontal views into the end of the joint in a wall according to the invention. Composite panels 1 are connected to each other by a tongue 2 and a groove 3 on each side of the wall. A post 4 has flanges 5 extending into the joint areas between the composite panels, cutting the joint area into the central region of the composite panel. Figure 2 shows a construction similar to Figure 1, but having an inner flange 6 extending along the inner side of the composite panel 1.
Fig. 3 shows a notch 7 extending from the joint in the opposite direction with respect to the tongue 2, with the flange 5 extending into the notch 7. Fig. 4 shows a construction similar to Fig. 3, further comprising an inner flange 6 supporting the plate with the groove. Fig. 6 shows the same type as Fig. 2, but with a flange 8 extending along the end of the tongue 2.
Fig. 7 is an isometric view of a portion of a post 1 with a hole 9 for electrical wiring and a barb 10 for supporting insulating units in the space left inside the wall, in particular insulating mats which can be pressed onto the barbs to fix them in place to resist fire and to fill the cavity in the middle of the wall. These barbs point alternately to the left and to the right.
Fig. 8 zeigt eine Aussteifung durch im Steg des Stehers 1 ausgeformte Kugeln 11.Fig. 8 shows a reinforcement by means of balls 11 formed in the web of the upright 1.
Fig. 9 shows a stack of uprights 1, where the angles between the web and the flange are obtuse and the value is arc sin t/h. When the uprights are installed in the wall, all angles become right-angled, since the angles in the connection area are right angles. The uprights are then placed under some tension, which prevents rattling.
Fig. 10 shows an embodiment of a post, where the wall is a floor or a ceiling. The post is a cross beam or a floor beam (which terms also fall under the scope of the term post), which itself resists the weight loading it or which is glued to adjacent plates 1, which then provide resistance as flanges. The figure shows three types of barbs 12 that support the plates 1 when mounted.
Fig. 11 shows a post 4 with flanges 5, which are manufactured as diamond-shaped units 15, which form a grid.
Fig. 12 shows a post 4 with an inner flange 5, in the embodiment of a post for external walls, whereby recessed sections 13 are provided to reduce the cold flow and the flange 14 only makes up 1/5.
Fig. 13 shows a connection of the composite panels 1 with a wall or a ceiling, wherein the upright is not continuous, but is in the form of a connecting link with a nail hole in a flange 16.
Fig. 14 shows a post 4 with a flange 5 which is scored or otherwise provided with a rough surface in order to increase the adhesion of the adhesive.
Posts for interior walls are normally vertically aligned, however, according to the invention, these posts can also be horizontal, for example for exterior walls in industrial buildings, on the outside of the supporting framework. If the tongue points upwards and the groove points downwards, rainwater cannot enter the connection areas.
It has been found that walls according to the invention are superior in fire resistance to interior walls of any other type, especially to walls containing voids. This is because the flange can be made very small. The flange on one side absorbs the heat in proportion to its size and the web of the upright conducts the heat through the wall. There the other Flange transfers the heat to the adjacent panels. A normal flange is 40mm thick, whereas a flange of the inventive wall can be as little as 6mm thick. A temperature of 1000ºC on one side of the wall results in 380ºC in a normal wall, but only 154ºC in a wall according to the invention. A fire-resistant wall of class A-60 heated to 950ºC can reach 180ºC in isolated places, whereas the inventive wall only reaches 140ºC and therefore a wall according to the invention has a higher fire resistance than a wall of class A-60.
Fire-resistant composite panels are used for fire-resistant walls, such as cement-bonded chipboard. These have the disadvantage that they are almost impossible to nail and therefore have to be screwed on for fastening. With such panels, a wall upright according to the invention is of particular importance, since a connection in it does not depend on nailing or screwing. Therefore, walls according to the invention are both more fire-resistant and easier to build.
For external walls, water-resistant composite panels and uprights are required which do not conduct cold flow sufficiently to prevent dew. Cement-bonded chipboards and a upright as shown in Fig. 12 meet these requirements and are therefore suitable for external wall constructions and at the same time very economical. Fig. 18 shows a section through such a wall, with the upright having a reduced cross-section as shown in Fig. 12.
Fig. 15 shows a composite panel 1 of a wall according to the invention with a tongue 2 and a notch 7 for a sheet metal flange on one side edge and a groove 3 for a tongue of an adjacent panel in the other side edge.
Fig. 16 zeigt einen Steher 4 mit Flanschen 5.Fig. 16 shows a post 4 with flanges 5.
Dasselbe gilt für alle Verbindungen entsprechend den Fig. 1 bis 6.The method according to the invention can be described with reference to Fig. 17. The composite panels AA and BB are manufactured according to Fig. 15. First, the panels AA are connected by the upright 4, which is made according to Fig. 16. Then, the panels BB are connected to the panels AA by means of the tongues 2 and the grooves 3. Since a groove-tongue connection is a friction connection, a force is needed to press the tongue into the groove and, for the same reason, a force is needed to pull the panels A and B apart. Therefore, the connection is strong and does not require any nailing or connection between the uprights in the wall to hold the joints together. The same applies to all the connections according to Figs. 1 to 6.
Fig. 18 zeigt eine erfindungsgemäße Außenwand. Fig. 18 shows an external wall according to the invention. The composite panels and the uprights with recesses 17 according to Fig. 12 form a certain volume. Strips 18 are arranged therein and connected to a windproof plate 19 to define an air duct 22 which is separated from an insulation 20 which is attached to a vapor barrier 21. This wall unit can be manufactured as a whole in a factory.
The main advantages of the invention are that the upright is reduced to half its size, made stackable for transport and storage, conducts only half the cold flow due to the half cross section and additionally has small flanges and therefore conducts less cold flow and is also more fire resistant. The tongue and groove joint creates friction at the joint so that no connecting rods or nails are required. The composite panels with the notch for the flange are just as useful for applications where no flange is present and are therefore doubly useful. Since no nails are required, the flanges can be smaller.
