Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an improved process for the selective separation of the constituents of a copper-molybdenum (Mo-Cu) ore by flotation. More particularly, the present invention relates to a process for such separation, carried out at natural pH (i.e., without the addition of alkalis (such as lime) or acids in amounts sufficient to substantially modify the pH) and without the addition of a copper collector in the primary flotation circuit, resulting in the recovery of a primary Mo-Cu concentrate.
In conventional flotation systems for copper ores containing recoverable molybdenum by-products, the ore is first crushed and ground, usually with lime added to suppress pyrite. The ore is then treated in a primary flotation circuit after copper collectors and frothers are added. The resulting coarse copper concentrate contains most of the copper and a significant proportion of the molybdenum. This coarse copper concentrate is then subjected to several post-cleaning or purification flotation stages (usually after re-grinding) to produce a final copper concentrate. This concentrate contains virtually all of the molybdenite (MoS2) recovered in the coarse circuit. The copper concentrate is then treated in a series of separation stages designed to separate the molybdenite, a byproduct in many copper ores, as a high-purity concentrate.
A major problem with this system is that lime, used as is, can suppress some of the molybdenum, causing a reduction in the achievable recovery of MoS2 mineral.
Another major problem with the conventional system is that it requires molybdenum recovery from a copper concentrate with a high reagent content. Therefore, the separation of molybdenum from the copper minerals is particularly difficult. A complex secondary separation system is required, which is costly, requires a high level of copper reagents and can cause a reduction in molybdenum recovery.
In der US-A-2 316 743 wird ein Verfahren zur Gewinnung von Molybänit durch eine primäre Schaumflotation offenbart, wobei ein Dreikomponentensammler verwendet wird, der wenigstens einen höheren aliphatischen Alkohol mit 6 bis 10 Kohlenstoffatomen (den Schäumer), einen Kohlenwasserstoff der Paraffinreihe und einen Kohlenwasserstoff der Terpenreihe umfaßt, wobei der Alkoholgehalt des Schaumsammlers praktisch 40 % ist.US-A-2 316 743 discloses a process for recovering molybdenite by primary froth flotation using a three-component collector comprising at least one higher aliphatic alcohol having 6 to 10 carbon atoms (the frother), a hydrocarbon of the paraffin series and a hydrocarbon of the terpene series, the alcohol content of the froth collector being substantially 40%.
In der US-A-3 426 896 wird ein Verfahren zur Trennung von Molybdän-, Kupfer- und Eisenmineralien enthaltenden Metallerzen offenbart, bei dem neue Molybdän/Kupfer-Sammler unter Verwendung von Isothiuroniumsalzen verwendet werden.US-A-3 426 896 discloses a process for separating metal ores containing molybdenum, copper and iron minerals using novel molybdenum/copper collectors using isothiuronium salts.
In der US-A-4 515 688 wird ein Verfahren zur Trennung der Bestandteile eines Erzes durch aufeinanderfolgende Flotation einer Trübe des Erzes und Wasser bei seinem natürlichen pH unter Anwendung des Zusatzes von Sulfid-Ionen und Cyanid-Ionen zum Drücken oder Senken und Hemmen der Flotation von Pyriten und anderen Unedelmetallsulfiden, die nicht gewonnen werden sollen, offenbart.US-A-4 515 688 discloses a process for separating the constituents of an ore by sequentially flotation of a pulp of the ore and water at its natural pH using the addition of sulphide ions and cyanide ions to depress or lower and inhibit the flotation of pyrites and other base metal sulphides which are not to be recovered.
An object of the present invention is to provide a process for the flotation separation of the constituents of a copper ore (with molybdenum as a by-product) by flotation for This process provides a convenient, inexpensive and effective method of extracting molybdenum of acceptable quality.
Another object of this invention is to provide a process for such separation which can be carried out at natural pH and avoids the use of lime and other pH modifying agents.
Another object of this invention is to provide a method for such separation which avoids the use of significant amounts of copper mineral pressurizing agent.
Another object of this invention is to provide a method for such separation which avoids the use of a copper collector in the primary flotation circuit.
Another object of this invention is to achieve the recovery of a concentrate in the primary flotation circuit which is significantly enriched in molybdenum, which due to its increased molybdenum content can be separated into a molybdenum concentrate with fewer reagents and in a significantly reduced number of purification steps and which provides significantly increased recovery of the molybdenum mineral originally contained in the ore. The copper content of this primary flotation circuit after the purification steps can be diverted to the copper circuits. Thus, the overall copper recovery of the system is not compromised.
Erfindungsgemäß wird ein Verfahren zur Trennung von mineralischen Bestandteilen eines Erzes zur Verfügung gestellt, das Unedelmetallsulfide, einschließlich Kupfer- und Molybdänsulfide, und Pyrite enthält, umfassend die Schritte des Zerkleinerns oder Vermahlens des Erzes zum Freisetzen der Mineralien und zur Bildung einer Wasser/Erz-Trübe;According to the invention, a method for separating mineral components of an ore is provided, which contains base metal sulphides, including copper and molybdenum sulphides, and pyrites, comprising the steps of crushing or grinding the ore to release the minerals and to form a water/ore pulp;
Zusetzens eines Kohlenwasserstofföl-Molybdän-Sammlers und Schäumers zu der Trübe;adding a hydrocarbon oil molybdenum collector and skimmer to the slurry;
Flotierens eines primären Molybdänkonzentrats aus der Trübe in einem primären Flotationskreis;Flotation of a primary molybdenum concentrate from the pulp in a primary flotation circuit;
Discharge of the primary molybdenum concentrate for further processing to form a final molybdenum concentrate and treating the non-floating components of the primary flotation circuit to recover copper and molybdenum, characterized in that the process further comprises the steps of aerating the pulp prior to flotation of the primary molybdenum concentrate, the flotation being carried out at the natural pH of the pulp, which is determined essentially by the water used and the composition of the ore, without the addition of alkaline or acidic pH-modifying agents.
Further features of the method can be found in the dependent claims.
Diese und weitere Merkmale dieser Erfindung ergeben sich für den Fachmann auf dem Gebiet im Lichte der folgenden Beschreibung, der beigefügten Ansprüche und beiliegenden Figuren, von denenThese and other features of this invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art in light of the following description, the appended claims and accompanying figures, of which
Fig. 1 ein Fließdiagramm eines Kupfer-Molybdän-Erz- Trennschemas durch Flotation gemäß der vorliegenden Erfindung undFig. 1 is a flow diagram of a copper-molybdenum ore separation scheme by flotation according to the present invention and
Fig. 2 is a flow diagram for the water balance of a copper-molybdenum flotation process as typically practiced in the southwestern United States where water is scarce.
According to the invention, molybdenum-containing copper ore from a mine is crushed and ground to the desired particle size to form the flotation feed material and the ore pulp.
Pre-processing is designated 1 in Fig. 1. According to the invention, apart from the required aeration, the only pre-processing that may be necessary in this stage would require the addition of very small amounts of redox agents such as sodium sulphide, hydrogen peroxide, etc. Combined contributions from ore mineralization, degree of surface oxidation and water chemistry (if not altered) may result in varying copper and iron sulphide mineral recoveries along with molybdenite in the primary coarse molybdenum stage. The treatment of the ore prior to flotation by aeration and, if necessary, also with special reagents, carried out during or after the crushing stage, is necessary to prevent or minimize this recovery of copper and iron sulphides. The additional special reagents used may have reducing properties, such as hypochlorites or peroxides. The amount of pre-treatment required is just sufficient to prevent or minimize the aforementioned recovery of copper and iron sulphides together with the molybdenite during the primary molybdenite flotation stage. In other words, the amount of redox reagent, if any, used and the amount of aeration is preferably just sufficient to prevent or minimize copper sulphide and pyrite flotation, i.e. i.e., suppressing their natural flotation ability without affecting molybdenite flotation and does not affect the pH.
In the overwhelming majority of cases, neither lime nor other pH modifiers are added (or, if added, lime is present in extremely small amounts compared to conventional lime circuits and only for the purpose of protective alkalinity, i.e. to prevent corrosion of the system).
In the primary molybdenite flotation circuit, no copper collector is added. However, at 2 in Fig. 1, together with a frother, a small amount of a hydrocarbon oil is added as a MoS₂ (moly) collector.
Suitable hydrocarbon oils include gas oil, diesel oil, heating oil etc. Preferably the hydrocarbon contains as little wax as possible.
The primary flotation circuit produces a coarse molybdenum concentrate containing some copper and a non-floated portion.
This concentrate, which is significantly enriched in MoS2 (moly) compared to conventional circuits, is then reground if necessary and fed to purification stages leading to the production of a final molybdenum concentrate. The simplification of the purification stages and the cost savings achieved by the invention are also considerable.
The non-floated portion of the primary circuit is fed to a copper flotation circuit. The non-floated portion contains some copper and the remaining non-floated minerals. Copper collector is added at 3 in Fig. 1.
Whether an oxidizing/reducing agent is added or not (either before primary flotation at 1 or before The performance of the flotation process (at 4 in Fig. 1) depends to a large extent on the natural oxidation/reduction conditions of the ore and the water used in the flotation process.
The coarse copper concentrate is typically returned to crushing and purification operations resulting in the production of a final copper concentrate, a final tailings product and possibly a secondary molybdenum concentrate. This latter concentrate, when generated, represents a small proportion of the total molybdenum disulfide content of the original ore due to the effectiveness of the primary flotation circuit of the invention in recovering molybdenite. This secondary molybdenite concentrate can be sent to the primary molybdenum circuit or to the molybdenum purification circuit, depending on the molybdenum analysis.
Further separation of the rinsing concentrate may require the addition of a small amount of oxidizing/reducing agent sufficient to minimize pyrite flotation.
The process according to the invention makes the use of cyanide unnecessary.
Instead of (or in addition to) a redox additive, aeration is advantageously used to control the redox potential of the slurry. The aeration can take place at 1 in the primary flotation circuit or at 4 in the first rinsing circuit.
Advantages of the process of the invention include simplification of the flotation scheme and savings in all reagents, including those resulting from the omission of lime and minimal, if any, addition of a redox agent, and also in frother and collector consumption.
Further benefits come from improving molybdenum disulfide recovery and/or quality.
Suitable molybdenum-copper ores for the practical implementation of the process according to the invention include copper-molybdenum sulphide ores containing chalcopyrite and chalcocite.
The present process is particularly suitable for ore separation in plants where the water is recycled. In fact, the process of the invention can be advantageously introduced into separation plants where a major portion of the water is recycled, as illustrated in Fig. 2 (prior art). This is because the addition of reagents (including collector and optional redox reagent) is so minimal that they do not accumulate in the recycled water. In Fig. 2, about 60% of the water in the system is recycled after flotation of a coarse concentrate, 4. Additional water is recycled from the rinse circuit 2 of the non-floated portion. All recycled water is collected at 3. The term GPT means US Gallons Per Short Ton of Ore Processed.
The invention is further illustrated below with reference to specific Examples. However, the scope of the present Invention is not limited by these Examples.
Erz: 500 g Kupfer-Moly-Erz der Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Company, hauptsächlich Chalcopyrit enthaltend. Wasser: 350 ml Verfahrenswasser (aus Stufe 1 der Fig. 2).Ore: 500 g copper-moly ore from Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Company, containing mainly chalcopyrite. Water: 350 ml process water (from Stage 1 of Fig. 2).
Primärkonz. nicht-flotierter Anteil berechnete AufgabemengeAfter grinding (for 6 min), Na₂S was added to the pulp (the equivalent of 50 g/ton of ore) in a dressing stage (1 min). The pulp was aerated with mixing for about 2 min and then the air was turned off. Fuel oil, 2 drops, was added to the pulp along with 6 drops of metal iso-butyl carbinol (MIBC), a frother. After flotation of the coarse concentrate (3 min), two drops of 2694, a copper collector, were added in a dressing stage (2 min) and the first mud concentrate was floated (4 min). Then another drop of copper collector was added (2 min) and the second mud concentrate was floated. The electrochemical potential was measured and found to be +40 in the first treatment stage during aeration and in the coarse concentrate flotation stage and +50 in the first rinse flotation stage. The pH was 7.5 during aeration, 7.8 during treatment, 8.0 during primary concentrate flotation and 8.2 during secondary concentrate flotation. The results were as follows: Product Analysis Distribution Weight Coarse concentrate 1-rinse conc. Primary conc. Non-floated portion Calculated feed quantity
