Abstract

The rotary arm has an elongated, lightweight arm structure (7) which is mounted at its one end to pivot about a rotation axis (10). An access area (5) is positioned near the distal end of the arm structure. Two actuator coils (6a,b) are mounted at the distal end of the arm within a magnetic field (H). The actuator coils are connected to actuators (23a,b) for providing a magnetic force within or parallel to the plane of rotation of the arm structure when one coil is activated. The actuator provides a force-vertical to the plane of rotation when the second coil is activated.
