Abstract
Description
In marine research, the measurement of the content of dissolved oxygen and z. B. the CO 2 in situ for the measurement tasks for which there are still no satisfactory measurement methods. The solutions that are currently known and are used take advantage of a membrane effect in which oxygen ions from the oxygen gas dissolved in seawater pass through the membrane pores under certain conditions and thus build up an electrical potential across the membrane, which is then determined.
Weitere Mängel dieses Verfahrens liegen in mangelhafter Meßgenauigkeit, in Drifteffekten, in Abhängigkeiten von dem Durchfeuchtungsgrad der Membranen u. v. a. m.One of the most crucial weaknesses of this process is that the The process of potential formation is very slow, so that often measuring times of a few minutes are required. Other shortcomings of this procedure lie in poor measurement accuracy, in drift effects, in dependencies on the degree of moisture penetration of the membranes u. v. a. m.
The applicant therefore sought completely different measurement options for the accessibility and measuring methods. He found it with a new method and a measurement arrangement, which is described below.
The following process and arrangement description refers to Fig. 1. However, it is only an exemplary arrangement to simplify the new method for in situ measurements, eg. B. the dissolved oxygen fes in water or sea water, much faster and more accurately and with higher resolution than the known methods.
The basic idea of the procedure is to be strict according to their quantity defined sea water sample with an equally strictly defined amount of Substance in situ as quickly as possible with the amount of sea water sample mix, which has a high affinity for the dissolved oxygen and forms a new chemical compound with it, which in its optical absorber tion spectrum is changed by the bond with the oxygen, so that the Amount of dissolved oxygen in the sea water sample via an optical Ab sorption measurement can be determined in the changed spectral range or ranges can.
A measuring arrangement operating according to this method can be carried out according to the principle shown in Fig. 1. In this Fig. 1 1 represents the test sample containing the substance to be measured, z. B. contains oxygen, dissolved. From it when pulling out by means of a pulling device 2, the sea water is transported out of the chamber 9 via the valve 6 into the space 8 with a pipe 4 by means of a movable punch. 5 The space 9 is connected to the medium 1 via an opening 16 in the cover 17 . 18 is a bearing through which the rod 3 of the stamp guided exactly who can. The same device as the one described is located there closely and is marked with the same numbers but with an additional line '.
The position of both punches 5 and 5 'can be set within the scope of their associated cylinders 4 and 4 ' strictly defined at the beginning of each measurement process, for. B. by means of the device in 2 and 2 ' , for electromagnetic solenoids or electric motors or other known mechanisms can be used ver.
The measuring process then takes place so that the plunger presses its liquid content in 8 through the valves 7 and 7 'and the connecting paths 10 and 10 ' into a cuvette chamber 14 . This pressing can be done by known methods so that at the same time in 14 a mixture of both volumes of 8 and 8 ' takes place. The cuvette then serves to measure the change in its absorption spectrum resulting from the chemical bonding of the oxygen to the reagent substance from space 8 '. Any of the known arrangements can be used for absorption measurement. The description of a specially adapted to the process and not yet known Meßanord voltage of the absorption requires further development. The substance in the room 9 'is kept in stock from a room 11 ' of the tube 13 with the stamp 12 via a hose connection 15 . The opening and closing of the Ven tile 6 , 6 ', 7 , 7 ' and possibly further can be linked both mechanically with the Stempelbe movements, as well as actively by electromagnetic or otherwise known valve controls.
The storage vessel 13 with its content 11 'can also be combined with the tube 4 ' to form a unit. The mixing ratio between the liquid speed of the medium in 9 to that in 9 ' can be set as desired by a selectable relation in the stroke heights as well as the pipe cross sections. To avoid long distances to the absorption cuvette, it is advisable to arrange the described pipe system as compactly as possible, as shown in Fig. 2 in a cross-section to the arrangement in Fig. 1.
In it 4 ' of Fig. 2 means the tube 4 ' in Fig. 1 in cross section. Corresponding applies to the tube 4 'and 13 in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. As far as the storage container 13 in Fig. 1 is placed on the tube 4 ' or is formed so that it forms a section in the tube 4 'can a tube 4 'in Fig. 1 of the same type tube 4 ''in Fig. 2 can be arranged in order to be able to react with two different reagent liquids to react with the sea water in 9 in the mixing vessel or a measuring cell. The pipe system 4 'can be supplemented by similar, so that in addition to binary liquid mixtures, triple or multiple can be used to achieve appropriate changes in the absorption spectrum to an improved determination of the measured variable.
Substances such as hemo are suitable for measuring the oxygen content in the sea globin, in which the oxyhemoglobin has a molecular absorption spectrum Has absorption band, which distinguishes it from the absorption spectrum of the hemo globins in a characteristic way. Have been around for a long time other chemical substances have become known, compared to dissolved Oxygen in sea water and other liquids has a much higher affinity have more than hemoglobin.
The method described for the rapid measurement of oxygen concentrations in the sea or freshwater lakes in situ should not be based on the measurement of dissolved Oxygen may be limited. Because according to the same procedure z. B. dissolved carbon dioxide according to its concentration, methane, sulfur water substance and other substances with corresponding other and known reagents in Determine liquid, gaseous and solid form.
There are also a few that, in addition to the molecular spectrum in Ab sorption also the dielectric constant and or also the number and type free moving ions changes. Therefore, according to the procedure, it is provided at the same time or instead of determining the concentration of the substances to be measured a change in suitable wavelength ranges of an absorption spectrum perform the measurement also based on the measurement of a change Dielectric constant or an electrical conductivity change perform.
For such measurements, known methods of dielectric constants can be used determinations or electrical conductivity measurements.
In the case of a determination of the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the sea in In situ it is also important to get through this determination as quickly as possible to be able to lead. According to the method it is therefore provided that the measuring arrangement to design that with very small amounts such. B. of sea water and hemoglobin or other known liquids with high affinity for oxygen for an absorbent tion measurement is sufficient. In this regard, a provision comes e.g. B. a preferred application of the oxygen content in sea water in situ. The also applies to carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, methane etc. determinations in situ according to the procedure described.
Figures 1 and 2 represent only schematic arrangements of the method. The application should therefore not be restricted to these.
