Description

The invention relates to a double-walled fuel tank according to the preamble of claim 1. A known fuel tank of this type (DE-GM 70 02 590) has an inner container made of sheet metal and an impact protection relatively thick-walled outer plastic container on which the inner container underneath Surrounds formation of local gaps. If necessary, emphasis is placed on the seal the outer container and the use of fuel-resistant materials laid for this.

While in this prior art the outer container for protection of the inner container serves against mechanical stresses and accordingly also is referred to as a protective jacket, the invention is based on the object of a double-walled fuel tank with the features of the preamble of claim 1 to train so that the diffusion of fuel vapors through the walls of the container in the environment is reduced. As is well known, the problem of fuel permeability arises in the case of fuel tanks, especially if one for reasons of ease of manufacture complicated container shapes and the deformability of the fuel tank for them Plastics used. To achieve a low permeability rate, the Plastic fuel containers according to their shaping with great expenditure on equipment be subjected to a chemical surface treatment.

The inventive solution to the defined object consists in the characterizing features of claim 1, advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the subclaims.

Basically it has been known for a long time - see only US Pat. No. 3,001,519-, in order to avoid the escape of fuel vapors into the environment, the free volume above the fuel level in the fuel tank via degassing or ventilation lines into which activated carbon filters are switched on, for example with to connect the air intake system of the internal combustion engine, so that the fuel vapors that are always present in the fuel tank above the fuel level do not escape into the open. In contrast, the invention is not concerned with such targeted degassing or venting of a fuel-free volume within the fuel tank, but with the capture and discharge of fuel vapors which, if the fuel tank were constructed with a single wall, would pass directly into the environment after diffusion through its walls. Such undesirable environmental pollution would also occur with the known double-walled design of fuel tanks described, since the fuel vapors entering the space between the inner and outer walls of the fuel tank would understandably after some time also penetrate the outer walls and thus get out into the open.

The invention makes it possible for those fuel vapors after Penetration of the inner walls into the space between them and the outer shell have reached, to be discharged or sucked off via the degassing line before they also diffused through the outer shell.

An embodiment of the invention is described below with reference to the Drawing explained showing a cross section through a fuel tank for the Reproduces the engine of a motor vehicle.

The double-walled fuel tank, generally designated 1, consists from the inner container 2, which is made from a known per se which is as fuel-impermeable as possible Plastic manufactured i:, t, and the outer film envelope 3, which is also made of a plastic impermeable to fuel vapors, for example POM is. Sheath 3 constitutes one after receiving the inner container 2 by welding closed Foil bag represents the filler neck with the extension 4 5 and with extensions 6 and 7 degassing lines 8 for the inner container volume and 9 for the space 10 between the inner container 2 and the outer shell 3 in a sealing manner surrounds over part of its length. The same applies to extensions 11 and 12 at the entry and exit points of fuel supply and return lines 13 and 14, which lead to a fuel pump arranged in the inner container 2.

If necessary, the outer shell 3 can be partially covered by a shell 15 be made dimensionally stable or locally reinforced.

The fuel vapors diffused into the space 10 are over the degassing line 9, which is in the above the fuel level in the inner container 2 discharging vent line 8 runs in, and dac activated carbon filter 16 is sucked off, that to its cleaning with the air intake system of the internal combustion engine in itself can be connected in a known manner.
