Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a frequency modulator according to the preamble of claim 1. Such FM control stages consist of an oscillator with a modulation device (capacitance diodes) with which a Frequency modulation can be realized. So that the high frequency center frequency (carrier frequency) is stabilized in terms of frequency, the oscillator is provided with a control loop. The control loop consists of a divider - which can also be programmable -, a phase comparator, a comparison standard and a loop filter. A circuit of this type is shown in Fig. 1 in the block diagram.
The function of this circuit can be described as follows will be:
First, it is assumed that no modulation signal is present (that is, no FM is desired). The carrier signal, here from the frequency 100 MHz, is divided down by the divider (÷ N) , here to 1 kHz, and compared with a comparison as normal. The carrier frequency is changed until the divided carrier frequency signal and the comparison standard have the same frequency and thus an invariable phase relationship to one another. The loop filter is dimensioned so that the comparison frequency is filtered out, so that the control voltage in the steady state is a DC voltage.
If a voltage is now applied to the modulation input, the frequency of the oscillator changes and a signal is produced at the output of the divider, which phase varies accordingly. The control loop now tries to regulate this desired phase modulation, so that the actual modulation process is influenced in a quality-reducing manner. In order to prevent this, the loop filter must be dimensioned such that the time constant τ of the loop filter is much smaller than the period of the lowest modulation frequency f min to be transmitted, which leads to an uncomfortable slow settling behavior of the oscillator.
Particularly at low modulation frequencies, a very large phase shift occurs at the oscillator, which appears to be reduced by the factor N at the phase comparator input (frequency comparator input). If this phase shift is greater than the maximum permissible phase deviation for the comparator, the control loop (PLL) falls out of step, which is associated with considerable interference.
The circuits according to the prior art therefore have four major disadvantages:
- 1.Erhebliche Frequenz- und Phasengangverzerrungen, wenn die Periodendauer der tiefsten zu übertragenden Modula tionsfrequenz in die Größenordnung der Schleifenfilter zeitkonstante kommt.1.Significant frequency and phase response distortion if the period of the deepest modules to be transmitted tion frequency in the order of the loop filter time constant comes.
The PLL falls lightly out of step with deep modules frequencies.
Long catch times of the PLL because of the loop filter time constant must be chosen very large.
Auxiliary shafts, which is explained below - in the form of beat products, formed by comparison standard and modulation frequency.
The object of the invention is to provide a frequency modulator Specify the type mentioned at the beginning of the described Avoids disadvantages as far as possible. The invention is in Claim 1 marked. The other claims contain advantageous embodiments of the invention.
The four disadvantages mentioned above are based on the fact that with a conventional PLL circuit in the phase compa rator the divided, still phase-modulated benefit signal is compared with the frequency standard and itself this phase modulation reduces the quality works. Through the circuit arrangement according to the invention the phase modulation synchronous with the modulation signal compensated out. The control loop is therefore in modu faked case of the modulationless case and the PLL control loop therefore has no influence the modulation process.
The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to FIGS. 2 and 3.
If the oscillator is frequency modulated, a phase-modulated signal also arises behind the divider. The pulses behind the divider have different time intervals according to the current modulation. There are three different cases. For example, if during N Oszilla gate pulses the frequency is smaller than the carrier frequency, the pulse spacing is larger than in the unmodu lated case. If, on average, the oscillator frequency during the N oscillator pulses is greater than the carrier frequency, the pulse intervals behind the divider are correspondingly shorter than in the unmodulated case. In Fig. 2 in the first row of this case is shown in dashed lines in comparison equal to the unmodulated case (solid line). If, on the other hand, the oscillator frequency is unchanged on average during N oscillator pulses, the pulse spacing is exactly as large as in the unmodulated case. This latter case occurs e.g. B. on when the period of the modulation frequency is just equal to the time interval between two successive pulses and thus the modulation frequency is just as large as the reference normal frequency. In all three cases, the divider has an integration function to a certain extent via N oscillator pulses and thus the pulse edge jit tert in time with the integrated message.
This jitter is compensated for in accordance with the invention by the width of the pulse behind the divider in accordance with va riiert, whereby the time interval of the falling Flanks of two successive pulses are always the same remains.
For example, if the pulse moves to the left behind the divider (advance), first line in Fig. 2, the pulse width must be increased accordingly, second line in Fig. 2.
If you now only evaluate the falling one in the phase comparator Edge, the comparator does not recognize any phase modules tion more, although the oscillator is frequency modulated.
Fig. 3 shows a preferred embodiment of a frequency modulator according to the invention. A pulse width modulator with a downstream monoflop is inserted between the divider and the phase comparator of the control loop. The compensation signal is derived from the LF modulation feed line and fed to a control input of the pulse width modulator, specifically via a phase shifter, an integrator and a sample and hold circuit. The phase shifter ensures that the compensation signal is fed in the correct phase.
The functioning of the compensation branch can be as follows dimensions are described:
The message integrated up to the start of the pulse (in the example: rising edge) is a measure of the phase shift behind the divider. This particular integral is implemented in terms of circuitry with an integrator and a subsequent sampling circuit, which is activated briefly (sampling time → Φ ) at the moment the pulse begins. This sampled voltage is then buffered until the following pulse begins and used as a control voltage for the pulse width modulator.
The monoflop following the pulse width modulator triggers on the temporally jitter-free flank (here the falling Edge) and generates an output signal with an off / on ratio of about 1, what different phase comparals is a great advantage.
A problem with an uncompensated control loop are the resulting low frequency beat frequencies (the above mentioned spurious) through the loop filter can only be insufficiently damped.
For example, the modulation frequency is the same as the comparison normal frequency, so there is also in the incompatible case no phase fluctuations at the divider output, because the integration time of the divisor, just the period corresponds to the modulation frequency. However, gives way Modulation frequency slightly from the comparison standard, see above there is a phase change (the impulses behind the Divider) with the beat frequency. Because this beat frequency can be very low, that's what makes it so the following loop filter is not a sufficient selection, so that the beat frequency as an unwanted spurious over the Control voltage line modu the traceable oscillator liert.
Through the compensation device according to the invention also prevents the formation of this beat frequency. in the Compensation branch is namely the message until integrated at the beginning of each pulse. It just arises if the beat frequency, then the pulse width modulator accomplishes the compensation.
Overall, one can say that the integrator with sampling Hold circuit and the phase shifter the temporal Ver keep replicating the divider (what the integration be hits) and thus compensation is possible.
