verunreinigt; e.; schmilzt dann tiefer.
scharf ab.Process for the preparation of P-nitronaphthalene. As is known, the nitro group cannot be introduced directly into the ß-position of naphthalene by nitration, and in order to get to ß-nitronaphthalene, one either has to take the cumbersome route, which involves very poor yields, which is via α-naphthylamine and the like o-Nitro derivative leads (see. Reports d. D. Chem. Ges., Vol. 19, S: 237), or take the detour via that ß-naphthylamine, which leads to the goal with poor yield. It has now been found that beta-nitronaphthalene can be used to advantage if tetrahydronaphthalene is used as a starting point. This can be converted into an undecomposed boiling mixture of α- and ß-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene by nitration according to patent 2990 = 4, from which a pure ß-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene with a melting point of 345 bis is obtained by fractional distillation and, if necessary, by freezing out the first fractions 32.5 ' can be obtained. Just like the tetrahydronaphthalene itself, both the a- and the ß-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene take up bromine exclusively in the hydrogenated ring at a higher temperature, and if 4 atoms of bromine are allowed to act on one molecule of the nitro compound, one obtains quite smoothly with the evolution of hydrogen bromide the associated dibromo derivatives according to the equation: Cio Hit NOz + 4 Br = 2 BrH -f- Clo Ho Bra N02- These dibromo derivatives now contain analogously to the a-ß-dibromotetrahydronaphthalene of the formula the bromine also in the a-ß-position of the unsubstituted nucleus, but differ from the former, the same as the long-known P-ß-dibromotetrahydronaphthalene (cf. Reports d. D. Chem. Ges., Vol. 2o, p.1706), although hydrogen bromide is split off during distillation, it is not completely converted into naphthalene (the complete conversion only takes place through the action of lye), surprisingly because Here the elimination of hydrogen bromide with the production of the naphthalene ring is already complete during the distillation. "In order to get to ß-nitronaphthalene on this basis, a ß-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene completely or almost completely freed from a-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene is brominated at elevated temperature by adding 175 parts (1 molecule) of 320 parts (4 atoms) of bromine. The bromine is consumed to the extent that it mixes with the nitro product, and hydrogen bromide is evolved. After adding the entire amount of bromine, a thick, oily, only slightly colored product is obtained, which can be immediately subjected to distillation in the air-diluted room Around 50 ° the elimination of hydrogen bromide takes place, and on further heating the ß-nitronaphthalene distills below 20 mm at about xgo to 200 ° as an oil that rapidly solidifies in the original , the amount of which is x55 to 16o parts by weight and which is for Removal of small impurities is pressed on clay. If very pure ß-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene was used as the starting product, the prep arat the pure, Zimm-like odor of 6-nitronaphthalene, and the melting point of 76 '. After pressing, the yield is 140 parts by weight or 80 percent of theory, while pure β-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene is obtained from tetrahydronaphthalene with a yield of ¢ 2 percent of theory. If a ß-nitro product contaminated with a-nitrotetrahydronaphthalene has served as the starting material, the product of the distillation is contaminated with some u-nitronaphthalene; e .; then melts deeper. To clean it, dissolve it in the warmth in a little alcohol; it cools down and sucks off the separated, usually pure ß-nitronaphthalene sharply.
