Abstract
The invention relates to a method for optimizing the geometry of so-called axial HGMS filters (High Gradient Magnetic Separation) with regard to their efficiency and a corresponding construction method for such filters. In an axial HGMS filter, weakly magnetic particles suspended in a liquid flow parallel to thin ferromagnetic wires that are magnetized in an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to them. Due to the high magnetic field gradients arising in the vicinity of the wires, the particles are deposited on the wires, and thus a separation of particles and liquid is achieved. The invention provides a method for finding the most optimal arrangement of the wires in terms of filter efficiency. With the given space filling of the filter volume by the wires, the optimal arrangement of the wires is given. A manufacturing method for correspondingly optimized filter matrices is also described.
Description
The invention relates to a device for separating magnetizable particles from a flowing Medium according to the preamble of claim 1. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for Manufacture of the device according to claim 1.
The process of magnetic separation in high magnetic gradient fields (hereinafter referred to as High Gradient Magnetic Separation according to the Anglo-Saxon literature) uses the forces that weak magnetic particles in magnetic fields of the order of 1 - 2 · 10 4 A / cm by high field values (up to 10 7 A / cm 2 ) experience their separation from a mostly liquid carrier medium. The high field gradients required for a separation are generated in a ferromagnetic filter matrix which is magnetically saturated in an external magnetic field and which is composed, for example, of thin ferromagnetic wires suspended particles on them. If the filter matrix is saturated with particles, it can be easily washed out with the external field switched off, and a new separation cycle can then be started.
A major problem with HGMS technology, which is associated with the high energy costs for the This is the generation of high magnetic fields in large volumes and the achievement of the highest possible filter quality Development of the most efficient filter types possible, d. H. the optimization of the matrix structure of the filter with respect to its efficiency. Given the process data (such as the type of suspended Particles, strength of the applied magnetic field, flow rate etc.) the percentage of those flowing through the filter Understood particles that are trapped in the filter. The efficiency here always refers to one unloaded filter matrix at the beginning of a separation cycle immediately after switching on the magnetic field, when there are only a few particles on the matrix. This initial efficiency occurs as the particle builds up the matrix in a regular manner and is therefore a good measure of the efficiency of the entire separation cycle.
In the following, the efficiency of a filter is always understood to mean its initial efficiency.
A/cm2.In the case of classic HGMS procedures, which are e.g. If, for example, they are used industrially to enrich finely ground ore sands, the filter matrix typically generates field gradients of 600-2500 10 2 A / cm 2 with applied fields of 1-2 10 4 A / cm.
B. aus Chromstahl, ungefährer Durchmesser 100 μιτι) bei angelegten Feldern vonIn order to be able to separate even the smallest, weakly magnetic particles (diameter in the micrometer range), Much higher field gradients are required: these can be achieved with filter matrices made of e.g. B. thinnest ferromagnetic wires (z. B. made of chrome steel, approximate diameter 100 μιτι) with applied fields of
so 1 —2 104 A/cm erzeugen. The first such matrices were made with random steel wool, which fills the filter volume to about 1%. However, it soon turned out that filter matrices with an ordered structure are superior to those with a disordered structure. This affects both the efficiency and the fluidic properties (washability) of the filter. So are z. B. filter matrices, which consist of more or less regularly arranged ferromagnetic wires, wire nets or ribbons are known. In the so-called axial filters, ferromagnetic wires run parallel to the direction of flow of the medium and are magnetized in a magnetic field perpendicular to them. This prior art is taken from the article “Analysis of Matrix Systems in High Intensity Magnetic Separation”, published in the journal Filtratioin und Separation July / August 1977, page 339 to page 342.
For an axial filter there is now the problem of arranging the wires of the filter so that one results in the highest possible filter efficiency. The solution to this optimization problem is not yet known Another difficulty is the practical implementation of axial filter matrices with a defined arrangement of the Wires: since the wires magnetized in the external magnetic field attract each other, result problems with the mechanical stability of the matrix arrangement, particularly in the case of densely packed matrices.
The invention is therefore based on the object to improve the known device in such a way that at the highest possible separation efficiency and the lowest possible energy consumption to operate the magnetic field generator results.
' .This object is achieved by the characterizing features of claim 1. '.
Eine weitere Aufgabe der Erfindung ist es, ein Herstellungsverfahren für Filtermatrizen nach Anspruch 1Another object of the invention is to provide a manufacturing method for filter matrices according to claim 1
anzugeben, daß die Stabilität der Matrixanordnung nach Anspruch 1 auch bei hohen angelegten Magnetfeldern gewährleistetindicate that the stability of the matrix arrangement according to claim 1 even with high applied magnetic fields guaranteed
Von den Patentanmeldern durchgeführte theoretische Untersuchungen (H. Greiner, H. Hoffmann »Efficiencies of Axially Ordered HGMS-Filters Calculated from a Multiwire Model«, Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials 38,1983) zeigen, daß die Effizienz eines solchen Filters nur von dem Gittertyp der Anordnung der Drähte, der Raumerfüllung der Drahtmatrix und dem dimensionslosen ParameterThis object is achieved by the characterizing features of claim 2 In order to solve the optimization task according to the invention for axial filters consisting of parallel filters If ferromagnetic wires exist, it is assumed that the wires are arranged in a lattice-periodic manner are. Theoretical investigations carried out by the patent applicants (H. Greiner, H. Hoffmann "Efficiencies of Axially Ordered HGMS Filters Calculated from a Multiwire Model", Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials 38, 1983) show that the efficiency of such a filter depends only on the lattice type of arrangement of the wires, the space filling of the wire matrix and the dimensionless parameter

Die entsprechenden Berechnungen der Filtereffizienz zeigen eindeutig, daß hei vorgegebener Raumerfüllung der gitterperiodischen Drahtanordnung und bei einem vorgegebenen Wert des Parameters f die bezüglich der Filtereffizienz optimale Anordnung der Drähte erfinüungsgemäß aus einem quadratischen Gitter besteht, zu dessen Kanten das angelegte Magnetfeld einen Winkel von 45 Grad bildetThe corresponding calculations of the filter efficiency clearly show that the given space is filled the grid-periodic wire arrangement and with a predetermined value of the parameter f with respect to the Filter efficiency optimal arrangement of the wires according to the invention consists of a square grid, too the edges of which the applied magnetic field forms an angle of 45 degrees
Theorie und Experiment zeigen, daß eine Abweichung von der optimalen Matrixanordnung die Effizienz zum Teil erheblich herabsetztF i g. 3 gives an example of the theoretically achievable filter efficiencies for the in FIG. 3 drawn to scale Grid types with a space filling of 1.6%. For comparison are also with corresponding filter matrices (Wires with a diameter of 0.1 mm made of chrome steel) experimentally determined filter efficiencies are also listed. Theory and experiment show that a deviation from the optimal matrix arrangement increases the efficiency Part significantly reduced
F i g. 4 zeigt für einen festen Wert des Parameters t das Ansteigen der Filtereffizienz mit der Raumerfüllung der Filtenaatrix, deren Drähte optimal nach Anspruch 1 angeordnet sind.F i g. 4 shows, for a fixed value of the parameter t, the increase in the filter efficiency with the space filling of the filter matrix, the wires of which are optimally arranged according to claim 1.
For this reason, in the construction of axial filters rr.it a wire matrix arranged according to the invention is to be closed Note that when the field is applied, the wires attract each other if there is insufficient mechanical stability and forming bundles of several wires, thereby losing the matrix structure and making it one The mechanical stability of the matrix is particularly affected by the considerable impairment of efficiency To ensure high space filling, the filter matrix is constructed according to the invention as follows (Fig. 1, Fig. 2):
The wires (7) are stretched and positioned on suitable frames (3) under tension. Afterward the frames (3) are put together to form the filter matrix by means of suitable spacers (8) this z. B. perform as follows: the wire is first drawn onto individual frames (3), with the Positioning by means of notches (4) on the top and bottom (4,5) of the frame. To be good To ensure tension and thus stability of the wires, the frames (3) are in a suitable jig slightly curved after clamping and fastening the wires to the Frame this is relaxed so that the curvature of the frame is canceled and a good wire tension is achieved. The b.spanned frames are then put together to form the filter matrix by placing between the Frame suitable spacers (8) (e.g. bars along the free frame sides) are attached.
The economic value of the invention lies in the saving of energy costs when operating HGMS systems by using filter matrices that are optimized and manufactured according to the invention:
Since the energy required for this is approximately proportional to the square of the generated field, an optimization of the filter matrix according to the invention means considerable energy savings, because a lower field strength is required to achieve the same filter efficiency with otherwise identical process data. Here is a drastic example: An axial filter with a square basic cell and a packing density of 1.6% is considered. After 3 shows the arrangement in Figure 3 A is an efficiency of 90% at i = 2000 attained (curve A corresponding to the optimum arrangement A in F i g. 3) in the presence, while in the presence of the arrangement C an efficiency of 90 % is only given at f = 8000. Since t is proportional to H , there is an energy saving of a factor of 16 with otherwise identical process parameters. Compared to other matrix arrangements (e.g. corresponding to dcif curves D, E in FIG. 3), significantly greater energy savings result in comparison with the optimal arrangement. These considerations also apply to the use of filter matrices optimized in accordance with the invention in superconducting magnet systems, since they occur when the magnetic field is switched on
B. auch Z. J. J. Stekly, »A Superconducting High Intensity Magnetic Separator«, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, vol. Mag-11, no 5, September 1975). Der Einsatz der in der Erfindung beschriebenen axialen HGMS-Filter bietet sich für alle Anwendungen derEnergy required to magnetize the filter matrix with the strength of the applied field squared increases (cf. also Z. J. J. Stekly, "A Superconducting High Intensity Magnetic Separator", IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, vol. Mag-11, no 5, September 1975). The use of the axial HGMS filter described in the invention is suitable for all applications of the
B. D. Melville, F. Paul, S. Roath »High Gradient Magnetic Separation of Red Cells from Whole Blood«, IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, Vol.5 HGMS technology (for an overview see Gerber and Birss op. Cit.). For biological applications, at mechanical lesion of the biological filter material (e.g. red blood cells) during the filtering process should be avoided, axial filters are particularly suitable, as this is where the collision between "particles" and Wires is less strong than with the other filter configurations (cf. e.g. D. Melville, F. Paul, S. Roath "High Gradient Magnetic Separation of Red Cells from Whole Blood", IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, Vol.
Here the use of filter matrices optimized and manufactured according to the invention is indicated, since, for the reasons just mentioned, the mechanical forces that are applied are as low as possible red blood cells that are given by the magnetic field and the magnetic field gradient are still wants to achieve the highest possible efficiency.
