Description
Chim. de France [3] Bd. i i, S. 949, und Ber. der Deutschen Chem. Ges. Process for the preparation of laevoglukosan. The Laevoglukosan CBH "o06 was previously only used in the cleavage of certain glycosides, picein, coniferin, salicin, Apiin, by long-term boiling with Barytwas.ser or with caustic soda (cf. Bull. de la Soc. Chim. de France [3] vol. i i, p. 949, and Ber. of the German Chem. Ges. Vol. 27, Ref. S.665 and Vol. 39, P. 24i). obtain. It has now been found that the same Connection is created when you add a high molecular weight carbohydrate, cellulose, starch, Dextrin, of various origins and isomeric varieties of exposure to moderate temperature Subjected under dry distillation in high vacuum. It is noted that the distillation of wood that has not been chemically pretreated in the same way is neither new nor subject of the invention. ' Laevoglukosan, which in and of itself is not fermentable, is known to be fermentable by boiling with dilute mineral acids into ordinary Converted to glucose. The new method for its representation therefore provides a practical means of extracting sugar and alcohol from carbohydrates in general and celluloses in the particular example. 100 parts of carbohydrate in the form of cellulose, z. B. cotton or starch, are filled into a retort, which with a immersing in water of -o ° and continuing one or more through a mixture connected by ice and salt-cooled containers: one produces in the apparatus a vacuum up to 12 to 15 mm of pressure and gradually heats the retort. Up to 2oo ° water passes over (3a parts), which condenses in the cooled templates. Between Zoo and 300 ° a thick oil of yellow color (45 parts) distilled, which as a doughy mass in the template heated to 50 ° accumulates. The Laevoglukosan is only contained in this doughy mass. To get it out of it this product is treated with boiling acetone; one filtered -in the warmth and strongly concentrates the solution. The Laevoglukosan crystallizes on cooling. Man completes its purification by recrystallizing from a small amount hot water. The fabric cleaned in this way is completely white and melts at 179.5 ° and has all the properties given in the literature. The yield is 35 parts.
