Die Verbesserung der Griffigkeit polierter Fahrbahnoberflächen erfolgt nach dem derzeitigen Stand der Technik durch Überbauen der vorhandenen Deckschicht oder durch Materialabtrag. Der Abtrag von Material geschieht durch Anfräsen, Abschleifen, Rilleneinschneiden, Anreißen, Abhämmern, Sandstrahlen oder Flammstrahlen. Mit Ausnahme des Sandstrahlens sind alle diese Verfahren mit relativ großem Substanzverlust für die Deckschicht und mit entsprechend hohem Aufwand verbunden. Wie sich durch überraschende Beobachtungen und durch nachfolgende Untersuchungen herausgestellt hat, läßt sich die Griffigkeit jedoch schon durch die mechanische Einwirkung einer Glattradwalze langfristig verbessern, wenn ihr Flächendruck durch Verringerung der Aufstandsfläche entsprechend gesteigert wird. Dabei entstehen in den hervortretenden Deckenbestandteilen Strukturstörungen, die für eine wesentliche Verbesserung der Griffigkeit ausreichen, ohne daß ein nennenswerter Substanzverlust eintritt. Augenscheinlich bleibt die so behandelte Teilfläche nahezu unverändert. Die für die Griffigkeit bei (meist ausreichender Rauhtiefe) ausschlaggebende Mikrostruktur ist jedoch entscheidend verändert. Glattradwalzen sind für gezielte Verbesserungen der Griffigkeit nicht geeignet, weil die gebräuchlichen Bandagen die Oberflächen alter Straßen nur in Teilflächen berühren und bei vollflächigem Kontakt keine ausreichenden Pressungen erbringen.
