Abstract
The invention relates to X-ray intensifying screens in which known rare earth phosphors are used as intensifying agents, i.e. for converting X-rays into visible light acting on photographic film. With these intensifying screens, it has been found desirable to reduce the graininess of the image. This can be achieved, for example, by reducing the image sharpness of layers close to the film and, according to the invention, results in the use of gamma aluminum oxide (γ-Al ↓ 2O ↓ 3) pigment (5), which is deposited in a thin layer (4) on the luminous layer (2 ) is applied or a small amount is added to the luminous layer, the desired improvement. Compared to the application of a thin layer containing calcium tungstate to the luminous layer, better brightness and thus better sensitivity are achieved. X-ray intensifying foils improved according to the invention can be used in particular in medical X-ray diagnostics for producing X-ray images.
Description
The invention relates to a method for reducing the graininess of Röregenhildern. Intensifying screens with rare earth phosphor are z. B. in the US-PS 40 29 851 described.
When using the known high-gain intensifying screens, the rare earth phosphors, such as Double halides, oxide halides and / or oxysulfides of rare earths contain, it is disadvantageous that grainy images have to be accepted. This disadvantage can according to the measures according to Main patent 30 31 267 can be avoided if a few grain layers on the surface of the intensifying screen layer containing calcium tungstate is applied. In this additional layer, however, a part is possible of the light contained in the luminous layer from the X-rays is lost.
The invention has the task of specifying a method by which the graininess of the rare earth intensifying screens with a slight decrease in the luminescence intensity will. This object is achieved according to the characterizing part of claim "1".
Advantageous embodiments of intensifying screens improved according to the invention are set out in the subclaims specified.
Hauptpatent
Als ^Al2O3-Pigment ist besonders solches geeignetThe use of intensifying screens improved according to the invention results in very "calm" X-ray exposures. Obviously, the application or introduction of a pigment made of aluminum oxide with a gamma structure (Al2O3) on or into the luminous layer results in a scattering that manifests itself as a kind of soft focus effect. This can be explained e.g. B. by light diffraction, ie by a deflection of the imaging light on the very fine-grained pigment, which in its grain size falls approximately in the order of magnitude of the wavelength of the luminescent light or is smaller. In the case of the luminescent substances currently mainly used in intensifying screens, this wavelength is around 100 to 500 nm. A blurring effect due to high light refraction cannot be used to explain the effect because the refraction quotient η of; ρ-Α1 2 Ο 3 at η = 1, The effect of the Al 2 O 3 is based on a different principle than that of the calcium tungstate, which has a higher light refraction, according to the main patent
Such a pigment is particularly suitable as a ^ Al 2 O 3 pigment
Nach diesem Verfahren wird nämlich Aluminiumoxid-Pigment erhalten, dessen Teilchen wenigstens angenähert kugelförmig abgerundeten Querschnitt haben.ίο which is produced from anhydrous aluminum trichloride (AlCl 3 ) by flame hydrolysis. According to this process, aluminum oxide pigment is obtained, the particles of which have an at least approximately spherical, rounded cross section.
The use according to the invention of gamma-Al2O3 does not significantly affect the luminescence intensity because it is sufficient to add small amounts, about 0.01 to 0.1 percent by weight, of it to the protective layer or the luminescent layer. The ^ Al 2 O 3 is also largely chemically inert and has an extremely low tendency to rehydrate under the influence of moisture.
Weitere Einzelheiten und Vorteile der Erfindung werden nachfolgend anhand der in den Figuren dargestellten Ausführungsbeispiele weiter erläutertFurther details and advantages of the invention are illustrated below with reference to the figures Embodiments further explained
In der F i g. 1 ist m vergrößertem Maßstab ein Ausschnitt aus einer Röntgenverstärkerfolie gezeichnet, auf deren Oberfläche eine Schutzschicht liegt die Gamma-AI2O3 enthält, undIn FIG. 1, a section of an X-ray intensifying film is drawn on an enlarged scale, on the surface of which there is a protective layer containing gamma-Al 2 O 3 , and

In FIG. 1, 1 denotes a 0.25 mm thick carrier film made of polyester, on the surface of which a 100 nm thick luminous layer 2 is applied. This consists of 5 to 10 μm crystals 3 made of aOBr: Tb. On the layer 2 there is a protective layer 4 which is about 0.01-0.02 mm thick and consists of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and 0.05 percent by weight y- Al 2 O3 pigment 5, the grain size of which is 0.5 μίτι In contrast to the design of the intensifying film according to FIG. 1 is in the embodiment according to FIG. 2, the ^ Al 2 O 3 pigment 5 is introduced into the luminous layer 2 and the protective layer 4 is free of pigment.
The mode of operation of the in F i g. 1 illustrated embodiment is above in the general description already specified. That of the intensifying screen according to FIG. 2, in which the pigment in the luminescent layer is added, can according to the same principle as the effect of the arrangement according to FIG. 1 to be declared, because here, too, light diffraction, etc., on the particles of the pigment is the basis for the desired Can be blurring effect.
