Differenzdruck-MeßumformerDescription
Differential pressure transmitter
The invention relates to a differential pressure transmitter according to the preamble of claim 1.
Dieses Volumen wird alsA differential pressure measuring transducer is known from DE-OS 26 59 376 in which a central diaphragm is arranged in a measuring chamber. The measuring chamber is divided into two sides by the central diaphragm, each of which is connected to separating diaphragms in a pressure-conducting manner via channels. The two separating diaphragms are designed to be media-resistant and serve as an interface to the process medium. Underneath the two separating diaphragms there is a cushion volume which, like the two sides of the measuring chamber and the channels for their pressure-conducting connection to the measuring chamber, is filled with a pressure transmission medium, e.g. a filling oil. The central diaphragm, in conjunction with the separating diaphragms, serves to protect a sensor from overload. If the differential pressure applied is zero, i.e. the pressure on both sides is the same, the central diaphragm is in a zero position. The cushion volumes under the separating diaphragms are the same size. If a pressure difference occurs, the middle membrane is deflected towards the side with the lower pressure. The separating membranes are bent accordingly. The separating membrane, which is subject to the higher pressure, is deflected towards the separating membrane bed, the other separating membrane is deflected away from the separating membrane bed by the amount of the volume displaced from the middle membrane. This volume is called

Verschiebevolumen bezeichnet. Displacement volume. If differential pressures are within the measuring range, the separating membrane on the side with the higher pressure must not come into contact with the separating membrane bed. If the differential pressure rises above the measuring range of the sensor, the sensor must be protected against overload. For this purpose, each separating membrane is provided with a membrane bed. The connection between the volume arranged between the separating membrane and the membrane bed and the measuring chamber is realized by a channel. If the differential pressure rises above the measuring range pressure, the central membrane is deflected further until the separating membrane on the side with the higher measuring pressure comes into contact with its membrane bed, closing the opening of the channel and thus preventing further transmission of the external differential pressure to the sensor. If the differential pressure rises, the pressure at the sensor does not rise any further. The sensor is protected against overload or destruction due to excessive differential pressure.
The invention is based on the object of creating a differential pressure transmitter which has effective overload protection and improved measuring sensitivity.
To solve this problem, the new differential pressure transducer of the type mentioned at the beginning has the features specified in the characterizing part of claim 1. Advantageous further developments are described in the subclaims.
Based on the schematic drawing, not to scale, in which an embodiment of the invention is shown,
GR 97 G 4429 DEGR 97 G 4429 EN
The following details the features and advantages.
Wenn die Membran wegen eines DifferenzdrucksThe figure shows a differential pressure transmitter with a central membrane 1, which is located in a measuring chamber and divides it into two sides 2 and 3. One side 3 of the measuring chamber is pressure-conductingly connected to a separating membrane 4, the other side 2 to a separating membrane 5. This pressure-conducting connection consists on one side of a channel 6 and a channel 7, on the other side 2 of a channel 8. As a limiting device to protect against an excessively high pressure difference, an overload membrane 9 is inserted into the pressure-conducting connection between one side 3 of the measuring chamber and the separating membrane 4. This is located in an overload chamber, which divides it into two sides 10 and 11. Channel 6 opens into one side 10 of the overload chamber, and channel 7 into the other side 11. In the event of an overload, the overload membrane 9 is bent to one side or the other until it closes the opening through which channel 6 or channel 7 opens into the overload chamber. This means that the pressure difference at the central membrane can no longer be increased. The chambers and channels described are designed as essentially rotationally symmetrical recesses in stainless steel housing parts. The core of the differential pressure transmitter is a sensor 12, which converts the differential pressure at the central membrane 1 into a signal for displaying a measured value. For example, a silicon membrane can be provided in the sensor 12, into which piezoresistors 0 are doped. If the membrane is bent due to a differential pressure

durchgebogen wird, ändert sich der Widerstand. Diese Widerstandsänderung kann als elektrisches Signal zur Anzeige eines Meßwerts herangezogen werden.is bent, the resistance changes. This change in resistance can be used as an electrical signal to display a measured value.
If you remove the parts between two dotted lines 13 and 14 in the figure and put the two remaining outside parts together so that channels 6 and 7 are directly connected to each other, you are left with a differential pressure transmitter which corresponds to the known differential pressure transmitter in terms of the basic function of the overload protection. To better illustrate the advantages of the new differential pressure transmitter, a few more considerations on the known differential pressure transmitter are carried out below.
Herrscht keine Druckdiffe-The pressure is transferred from the separating membranes 4 and 5 to the sensor 12 via a filling oil, e.g. silicone oil or another inert oil, which is filled into the transmitter housing on both sides of the central membrane 1. In use, a static pressure of e.g. 400 bar can occur, while a differential pressure of 500 mbar is to be measured. A pressure is referred to as static if it acts on both separating membranes 4 and 5 at the same time. Since it cannot be ruled out that the static pressure is applied on only one side, e.g. as a result of incorrect operation, the sensor 12, which would not withstand such a pressure difference unscathed, is provided with an overload protection device. In the known differential pressure transmitter, this is achieved by appropriately dimensioning the volume in the measuring chamber and below the separating membranes 4 and 5. If there is no pressure difference,
GR 97 G 4429 DEGR 97 G 4429 EN
Die Druckverbindung zwischen Meßdruck und Sensor wird unterbrochen; die Druckdifferenz am Sensor wird somit auf einen Maximalwert begrenzt.difference on the two separating membranes 4 and 5, they float at the same distance above their membrane beds. If an overpressure occurs, for example on the P+ side of the measuring transducer, the middle membrane is bent. Due to the volume shift that occurs, the separating membrane 4 is also bent inwards and the separating membrane 5 is arched outwards. If the pressure on the P+ side is increased further, the separating membrane 4 comes to rest on its membrane bed, closes the channel 7 and no further volume can be displaced. The pressure connection between the measuring pressure and the sensor is interrupted; the pressure difference at the sensor is thus limited to a maximum value.
Eine bei Differenzdruck-Meßumformern gebräuchliche Größe ist die Volumensteife VS, die definiert ist alsA common value for differential pressure transmitters is the volume stiffness VS, which is defined as
VS = ■£
V VS = ■£

mit

&rgr; - pressure drop across the membrane and

An achievable final value Δρ μ of the measuring range is determined with negligible volume stiffness of the separating membranes 4 and 5 solely by the volume stiffness VS M of the central membrane and the volume V p that can be displaced under a separating membrane 4 or 5 according to the formula:
GR 97 G 4429 DE .··.! .·*.··*! .".GR 97 G 4429 DE .··.! .·*.··*! .".
&Dgr;&rgr;&Mgr; = reM · Vp Δρ μ = re M · V p
Bei der Dimensionierung des unter einer Trennmembran verdrängbaren Volumens Vp muß also für den gesamten Einsatzbereich des Differenzdruck-Meßumformers, der beispielsweise einen Temperaturbereich von 120 0K und einen zulässigen Bereich des statischen Drucks von 400 bar überstreicht, die Bedingung eingehalten werden, daß bei der Nullage das unter einer Trennmembran 4 oder 5 verdrängbare Volumen Vp nicht einen Minimalwert VP/ min mitWhen dimensioning the volume V p that can be displaced under a separating membrane, the condition must be met for the entire application range of the differential pressure transmitter, which covers, for example, a temperature range of 120 0 K and a permissible range of static pressure of 400 bar, that in the zero position the volume V p that can be displaced under a separating membrane 4 or 5 does not reach a minimum value V P/ min with
unterschreitet. The smallest displaceable volume is reached at minimum operating temperature and maximum static pressure. On the other hand, it is greatest at maximum operating temperature and minimum static pressure. The following calculation example is intended to explain that the known differential pressure transmitter is subjected to pressure fluctuations far beyond the actual measuring range:
Eine bei Temperatur- und Druckschwankungen auftretende Änderung &Dgr;&ngr;&rgr; des verdrängbaren Volumens VP kann berechnet werdenA change Δνρ of the displaceable volume V P occurring due to temperature and pressure fluctuations can be calculated

Es gilt also:It should be noted that the volume V K in the measuring chamber also expands, which in the known differential pressure transmitter is approximately ten times the minimum displaceable volume V P/ ,^ n on each side. The following therefore applies:
V = 11 · V9i min V = 11 · V 9i min
For a temperature range with a width of 120 0 K and an allowable range of static pressure of 400 bar, one therefore obtains a maximum change Δν R/ ^ 3x of the displaceable volume V p
= 1,8 · Vp_ min = 1.8 · V p _ min
The maximum displaceable volume, which is thus larger by a factor of 2.8 than the minimum displaceable volume V P/ ^ n , leads to a significantly greater stress on the sensor 12 and means that the breaking point of the sensor 12 must be at least 2.8 times the final value of the measuring range.

To ensure that fluctuations in temperature and static pressure do not lead to a falsification of the differential pressure measurement value in the known differential pressure transmitter due to the volume stiffness of the separating membranes, equal filling volumes are provided on both sides of the central membrane. Therefore, in the known differential pressure transmitter, the volume on one side 3 of the measuring chamber must be adapted to the volume on the other side 2, which is relatively large due to the structure of the sensor 12, the arrangement of electrical connections 15 and the routing of an electrical supply line 16 to a pressure-resistant glass feedthrough 17. This adaptation of the filling oil volumes on both sides of the central membrane is carried out by specially provided holes in the housing on one side 3 of the measuring chamber, which are no longer required in the new differential pressure transmitter. An adjustment of the volume to meet the symmetry condition can advantageously be made in the new differential pressure transmitter to the volume under the measuring diaphragm 4. In principle, the equality of the filling oil quantity on both sides of the central diaphragm l, which is required for a measurement independent of fluctuations in temperature and static pressure, can also be ensured by appropriate dimensioning of the filling oil between the overload diaphragm 9 and the separating diaphragm 4.
The use of a membrane to limit the movable volume in the overload chamber has the advantage that there are no seals that could wear out due to friction or material stress. Sealing problems 0 naturally do not occur with the overload membrane 9.
GR 97 G 4429 DEGR 97 G 4429 EN
The recesses in the measuring chamber required for the sensor connections 15, the conductor feed 16, the connection to the glass feedthrough 17 and the sensor 12 itself can be provided on the side of the central membrane 1 facing away from the overload membrane 9. This advantageously does not increase the volume between the central membrane 1 and the overload membrane 9.
The invention also has the advantage that, due to the insertion of the limiting means between the measuring chamber and the separating membrane 4, only the volume expansion of the filling oil between the central membrane 1 and the overload membrane 9 contributes to a change in a displaceable volume Δν ρ max '. The volume below the separating membranes 4 and 5 also does not lead to a change in the displaceable volume due to expansion.
Das Volumen VK' der Kammer auf der einen Seite 3 der Mittenmembran 1 ist in der Nullage dann gleich dem verdrängbaren Volumen, d. h., zurA minimal change in the displaceable volume in the event of fluctuations in temperature and static pressure is achieved when the volume between the central diaphragm 1 and the overload diaphragm 9 at the highest filling oil density is exactly equal to the volume in the overload chamber plus a volume for a free stroke of the central diaphragm. This free stroke ensures that in the event of an overload, the overload diaphragm 9 is applied first. With this design, from one overload case to the next, the entire volume of the overload chamber is shifted to one side 3 of the measuring chamber and there is no dead volume that is not shifted. The volume V K ' of the chamber on one side 3 of the central diaphragm 1 is then equal to the displaceable volume in the zero position, i.e.

Berechnung der Änderung des verdrängbaren Volumens ist nach der obigen Formel, die für den bekannten Differenzdruck-Meßumformer entwickelt wurde, aber auch für den neuen Differenzdruck-Meßumformer mit anderen Größen Gültigkeit hat, einzusetzen: Calculating the change in the displaceable volume is to be done using the above formula, which was developed for the known differential pressure transmitter but is also valid for the new differential pressure transmitter with other sizes:

The load limit of the sensor 12 achieved with the new overload protection is therefore considerably closer to the end of the measuring range, since the overload protection can be dimensioned much more precisely. Since almost the entire load range of the sensor 12 can be used as the measuring range, the sensor sensitivity and thus the measuring sensitivity is increased. Another advantage is that the overload membrane 9 can be designed as a flat membrane, which deforms less when the overload bed in the overload chamber is precisely adjusted, in contrast to a corrugated membrane, as was used in the known differential pressure transmitter for overload protection. This avoids a hysteresis error that had occurred after an overload due to embossing of the separating membranes in the previous solution.

Bei nicht vernachlässigbarer Volumensteife VS9 der Überlastmembran 9 sollten die Volumina derart dimensioniert werden, daß die BedingungThe central diaphragm 1 does not have a detrimental effect on the insensitivity of the measuring transducer to fluctuations in temperature and static pressure if the volume stiffness of the overload diaphragm 9 is negligible and the volume of the filling oil on both sides of the central diaphragm 1 is the same. If the volume stiffness VS 9 of the overload diaphragm 9 is not negligible, the volumes should be dimensioned in such a way that the condition

VS5 - Volumensteife der Trennmembran 5,V 1 - volume of filling oil between separating membrane 5 and middle membrane 1,
VS 5 - Volume stiffness of the separation membrane 5,

VS4 - Volumensteife der Trennmembran 4 erfüllt ist.VS 4 - Volume stiffness of the separation membrane 4 is fulfilled.
With this dimensioning, an expansion of the filling oil does not affect a change in the position of the central diaphragm 1 and fluctuations in temperature and static pressure do not distort the measurement result.
