Luminescence is the emission of light with a characteristic spectral composition due to the supply of energy to a preparation. This exposure of the preparation can be achieved, for example, with an electron beam of a certain energy, e.g. in a scanning electron microscope. In this case, we speak of cathodoluminescence. The following description is based on cathodoluminescence as an example, without limiting the area of application of the spectrometer to other induced luminescence phenomena. Corresponding preparations come from the areas of semiconductor components, ceramics (e.g. catalysts), plastics and biomedicine (e.g. tissue samples). Imaging the specimen using the CL signal or measuring the CL spectrum using a suitable imaging spectrometer provides important information about the properties of the specimen that are the subject of current research and are not accessible using other measurement methods. Added to this is the advantage of the high spatial resolution that can be achieved with electron-optical devices (< 1μηη). In addition to the mere imaging, the spectral composition of the CL is also of interest. A commercially viable CL measurement system must therefore enable both the measurement of spectra and monochromatic and polychromatic imaging of a specimen area.
Die Einkopplung des Lichtes in ein Spektrometer erfolgt unterschiedlich.KL spectrometers usually consist of a light collector, a focusing optic and a spectral device (usually monochromators) with a downstream detector and output signal amplifier chain. Monochromators always have a small aperture, so that the light beam focused into the entrance slit must not exceed an aperture angle of 9°. Otherwise, intolerable losses occur. The KL is usually collected using mirrors mounted near the sample, which are intended to transport the light out of the sample chamber. The preparation area hit by the electron beam is usually located at a focal point of the mirror used. The light is coupled into a spectrometer in different ways.
In one of the previous types of CL spectrometer, a parabolic mirror is used to collect the light, which converts the CL emitted by the preparation into a parallel beam. This must then be focused into the spectrometer using additional optical components (lenses or lens groups, deflecting mirrors, etc.). On the one hand, this causes high absorption losses at the optical interfaces, and on the other hand, the glass materials used generate inevitable artifacts through self-luminescence, which interfere with the actual measurement signal. The measurement results therefore show only a moderate signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, the optical components require a high level of adjustment, which increases the system's susceptibility to interference.
The light is transported to the detector through tubes or light guides that are mirrored on the inside. The same applies to light guides as to the optical components mentioned above. Above all, however, due to the unfavorable exit characteristics of tubes and light guides, the light cannot be focused into a monochromator without high losses, so that these arrangements can practically not be expanded into spectrometers.
All of these devices also have in common that they use mirrors that cover the specimen upwards and/or to the side in a dome-like manner when in the measuring position. This has the extremely disadvantageous consequence that the specimen in the sample chamber of the electron-optical device becomes 'invisible' to other detectors (secondary, backscattered electron detector, X-ray analysis system) and simultaneous measurements are no longer possible. The other measuring methods can only be used again by retracting the collector, which contradicts practical work.
The device described by claims 1-7 avoids each of these disadvantages due to the following properties:

The ellipsoid mirror used is designed so that the first focal point is the specimen point hit by the electron beam (3 in Fig. 1) (small focal length, 11 in Fig. 1). The small focal length is usually greater than 30 mm. The mirror (7 in Fig. 1) does not cover the entire half-space above the specimen, but is designed as a segment.
These precautions result in the preparation remaining visible to all other detectors (1 and 2 in Fig. 1) when the mirror is in the measuring position and simultaneous measurements are therefore practically possible without restriction (claim 4).
The second (large) focal length (14 in Fig.1) is chosen to be so large that it is focused on a point outside the sample chamber through a vacuum window (9 in Fig.1 B) located in the chamber wall. The entrance slit of the monochromator with the measuring head connected downstream or the measuring head itself is positioned there (5,6 in Fig.2). Focusing is therefore carried out directly and, above all, without the need for additional optical components (see above) (claim 1).
So that after the first mirror adjustment, which is carried out in all spatial directions using a device on the mirror housing (9 in Fig. 2) (claim 3), nothing can be adjusted, i.e. the focal length ratios are maintained and the system can also be designed to be retractable and removable, the ellipsoid mirror segment and the spectrometer located outside the chamber are connected to one another with a fixed shaft via a vacuum sliding feedthrough (7, 8 in Fig. 2) (claim 2). The spectrometer is arranged on a linear actuator (not shown in the figures, direction of movement according to arrow in Fig. 2) that can be moved transversely manually or by motor (claim 5). Due to this design, the mirror and spectrometer or measuring head can no longer be adjusted relative to one another later. When the spectrometer is retracted, the distance between the chamber wall and the monochromator or measuring head changes. To ensure that no stray light influences the CL, an opaque telescopic tube (4 in Fig. 2) of variable length is located between them (claim 6). The measuring head can be equipped with different detectors for ultraviolet to infrared. The output signal is amplified by a high-bandwidth preamplifier in order to ensure, for example, imaging examinations up to TV frequency (claim 7). The measuring system is software-controlled and works under Windows™. The complete system also includes control and regulation units and, if necessary, a PC and peripherals.
An embodiment is shown in Fig. 1A, 1B and Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1, the device described in the claims is shown viewed from above (A) and from the side (B). The electron beam (15, dotted line) leaves the last lens of the electron-optical device (8) located in front of the preparation and falls on the sample (3), where cathodoluminescence is then generated. The solid lines correspond to the edge rays of the light beam emitted and collected by the ellipsoidal mirror segment 7. The ellipsoidal mirror segment 7, which has the dimensions 4, 5 and 10 (4 and 5: width measured from the center; 10 the height), is located at a distance of 11 (small focal length) from the sample and at a distance of 14 (large focal length) from the detector or monochromator located outside the vacuum chamber. It can be seen how, due to the properties of the ellipsoid mirror, direct focusing takes place via the window 9 with a diameter of 6 into the focal point 16 located outside the vacuum chamber. Everything to the left of the window is inside the vacuum chamber of the electron-optical device, everything to the right of it is outside. It can be clearly seen that other detectors (here designated 1 and 2) have a clear view of the preparation designated 3. The distance between the sample 3 hit by the electron beam 15 and the vacuum chamber is designated 12, the distance between the vacuum chamber and the focus is designated 13.
Über die Welle 7 sind Monochromator und Ellipsoidspiegel-Segment 2 mit Hilfe eines Halters 9, derIn Fig. 2, the connection is shown as an example for a grating monochromator (5) and its inner beam path. Ellipsoid mirror segment 2 and sample 3 are located inside the vacuum chamber of the electron-optical device 1. The solid lines again represent the edge rays of the cathodoluminescence light beam. The measuring head 6 downstream of the monochromator can also be seen. 4 illustrates the telescope tube between the sample chamber and the monochromator or detector, which protects the beam path from scattered light outside the sample chamber. The monochromator and ellipsoid mirror segment 2 are connected via the shaft 7 with the help of a holder 9, which
