The invention relates to a device for making rainwater, in particular roof runoff water, drinkable.
In some areas it is now suggested that roof runoff water be used to flush toilets in order to save drinking water, which seems particularly useful given the constantly rising water charges. The rainwater that runs off roofs is contaminated with bird droppings, other animals' droppings, dust, abrasion of the roof covering, microorganisms, moss and much more. Coarse contaminants can be retained by mechanical filtration, but bacterial contaminants can enter the collection container unhindered.
Beim Spülen der Toilette wird ein Sprühnebel von Wasser und Exkrementen erzeugt, in jeder Toilette kann man an der Decke, den Wänden undDepending on the location, temperature and length of time the roof water has been in the container, bacteria can multiply explosively in the collection container. The possible spectrum of pathogens in roof runoff water has not yet been fully understood. Excrement is a teeming mass of bacteria and viruses, many of which are pathogenic. When the toilet is flushed, a spray of water and excrement is created, and in every toilet, bacteria can be seen on the ceiling, walls and
Fecal clostridia and streptococci can be found on the door handles as well as on and around the seat. Clostridia are spore-forming bacteria that are very dangerous in the event of injuries as they cause gas gangrene and tetanus.
This means that when using roof runoff water contaminated with bacteria, pathogenic germs can be spread in the toilet or bathroom. The use of roof runoff water to flush the toilet must therefore be seen as a step backwards in sanitary hygiene, which can lead to an increase in general illnesses. This also applies to the use of roof runoff water to wash cars or water the lawn. Another risk is that microbial contamination can be transferred to food despite washing hands when preparing it, where it finds ideal conditions for reproduction, which can cause illnesses in humans. According to statistics, only around 60% of all Germans wash their hands after going to the toilet, and washing hands only reduces germs, not disinfects them.
It is possible to disinfect the roof runoff water collected in the tank using chemicals, but this type of disinfection also requires daily monitoring. It must also be assumed that water contaminated in this way must be treated with high concentrations of disinfectants, generally chlorine, in order to achieve a sufficient disinfection effect. However, large amounts of chlorine also result in the formation of so-called chlorine reaction products, which must be classified as environmentally hazardous due to their very long half-life - up to 5,000 years.
Ein zusätzlicher Chemieeinsatz steht jedoch im krassen Gegensatz zum Umweltschutz.always completely clean roof runoff water leads to increased contamination of the toilet bowl, which in turn is cleaned through increased use of chemicals in order to meet aesthetic requirements. However, additional use of chemicals is in stark contrast to environmental protection.
For the reasons mentioned above, the use of roof runoff water for any purpose without prior, adequate disinfection is therefore to be rejected. The use of roof runoff water is only recommended if it is of drinking water quality. But then roof runoff water can also be used without hesitation for other consumption purposes such as drinking, cooking, washing and the like.
The now very controversial discussion in the Federal Republic of Germany about the substitution of drinking water with rainwater has led to the EC directive "Quality of water intended for human consumption" being legally interpreted to mean that the roof runoff water used for flushing toilets must also meet the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance. The Drinking Water Ordinance is the implementation of the above-mentioned directive into German law. From January 1, 1995, the above-mentioned directive also applies in Austria.
The present invention is based on the idea of treating roof runoff water in a multi-stage process so that it meets the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance and can therefore be used anywhere in the home. This multi-stage process provides the basis for the device according to the invention, which will be discussed in the following description of the process steps.
Mit einer erfindungsgemäßen Vorrichtung läßt sich folgendesWith a device according to the invention, the following can be achieved

Die Vorteile der Kombination Grob-/Feinfiltration, Aktivkohlebehandlung und UV-C-Entkeimung zur Trinkbarmachung des Regenwassers - Dachablaufwasser - sind:The advantages of the combination of coarse/fine filtration, activated carbon treatment and UV-C disinfection to make rainwater - roof runoff water - drinkable are:
The roof runoff water is freed of particulate water constituents through coarse and fine filtration, the turbidity is reduced and the UV permeability of the water is improved, thereby increasing the effect of UV-C disinfection.
The activated carbon treatment absorbs chemical pollutants that can enter the roof runoff water through "acid rain" or abrasion of the roof covering or other environmental influences. In addition, the usual stale taste and smell of the roof runoff water is improved, thus increasing its acceptance.
Through the chemical-free disinfection of the roof runoff water by irradiation with ultraviolet rays with a wavelength of 253.7 nm (UV-C), all pathogenic microorganisms present in the water - bacteria and viruses - are reliably inactivated, the water treated in this way is completely disinfected and thus made perfectly drinkable.
Since the roof runoff water is disinfected before it is fed into the storage tank, contamination with bacterial proliferation in the storage tank is impossible. An additional disinfection stage in or after the storage tank can be provided as additional safety.
Dem Regenwasser - Dachablaufwasser - fehlen auch zum beträchtlichen Teil wichtige Mineralstoffe, welche im natürlichen Trinkwas-Rainwater - roof runoff water - also lacks a considerable amount of important minerals that are found in natural drinking water.
Therefore, an important component of the process presented here is the enrichment of the disinfected rainwater - roof runoff water - with vital minerals, trace elements and other vital substances by means of a suitable dosage in solid or liquid form before it is administered as drinking water.
A device for carrying out the method presented here can, for example, consist of the following components:
Gutter for collecting the roof runoff water with an inlet into the downpipe. At the inlet of the gutter into the downpipe there is a leaf catcher in the form of a leaf sieve with a passage width of 10-20 mm. Below this there is another leaf sieve with a passage width of 0.20 mm. To prevent the leaf sieves from becoming blocked by the accumulation of leaves, especially in late autumn, both leaf sieves are equipped with a device that frees the leaf sieves of the accumulated leaves. This can be done either by a pull rope, by which the leaf sieves are tilted backwards via a joint so that the accumulated leaves are thrown away from the leaf sieves, or by the leaf sieves being freed of the accumulated leaves by backwashing water from the inside so that the roof runoff water can flow unhindered into the downpipe.
At the lower end of the downpipe there is a device combination consisting of a coarse filter with a passage width of 60-80 pm and a fine filter with a passage width of 10-20 pm. The coarse and fine filters can be made of stainless steel and can be backwashed, for example. The coarse and fine filtration removes all mechanical impurities from the roof runoff water.
The coarse and fine filtration is followed by an activated carbon treatment to absorb chemical pollutants and to improve taste and smell. The activated carbon can be used either in the form of granules or as a foam coated with activated carbon to absorb chemical pollutants.
The filtered roof runoff water treated with activated carbon, with a significantly reduced turbidity due to the filtration and thus improved UV permeability, is now fed into a UV-C disinfection device in cylindrical form with a coaxially arranged UV-C radiation source with a wavelength of 253.7 nm, for example a low-pressure mercury lamp, where the filtered roof runoff water pre-treated with activated carbon is disinfected by inactivating all pathogenic germs - bacteria and viruses - in the water and therefore meets the requirements of the Drinking Water Ordinance TVO and the standards of the World Health Organization WHO for healthy drinking water.
The disinfected drinking water is then fed into the drinking water storage tank. This can be located outside the building, above or below ground, or inside the building. The drinking water storage tank can be made of masonry, in-situ concrete, precast concrete parts (concrete rings), plastic or stainless steel.
The disinfected drinking water is sucked from the drinking water storage tank by a water pump and is then fed to the individual consumer points via a conventional domestic water system with all the necessary fittings and safety devices via a distribution pipe network within the building.

The following monitoring devices are provided for the operation of the device for making rainwater drinkable - roof runoff water:
A solenoid valve that opens when powered ensures that only disinfected drinking water leaves the system and therefore no non-sterilized water can leave the system in the event of a power failure or failure of the UV-C irradiation device.
An optical and acoustic warning system, also with remote display, is provided as a warning for operational malfunctions.
An optoelectronic turbidity meter with programmable target and limit values is coupled with a flow rate limiting device - flow rate control valve - so that the effective disinfection effect of the UV-C radiation source always corresponds to the water turbidity or the UV permeability of the water.
An optoelectronic UV-C intensity monitor is coupled to the solenoid valve and ensures that the UV-C disinfection device is switched off if the pre-programmed radiation output of the UV-C radiation source is not reached.
An operating hour counter and pulse counter for switching the UV-C disinfection device on and off indicate the number of operating hours of the UV-C radiation source and serve to prompt the timely replacement of the UV-C radiation source after its service life has been reached.

ÖNORM M 5873 "Anforderungen an Anlagen zur Desinfektion von Wasser mittels UV-Strahlen" und der ÖNORM M 5871 "Ausstattung von Trinkwasser-Aufbereitungsanlagen mit Meßgeräten" voll erfüllt.ÖNORM M 5873 "Requirements for systems for disinfecting water using UV rays" and ÖNORM M 5871 "Equipment of drinking water treatment systems with measuring devices" are fully met.
The state health authorities, which are responsible for monitoring UV-C disinfection systems for drinking water, require that an operating log be kept for each UV-C disinfection system. Experience has shown, however, that these operating logs are only kept very poorly and not always completely and therefore do not guarantee objective and secure data collection and storage, which are essential for the proper operation of a UV-C disinfection system for drinking water.
It is therefore proposed to introduce an "electronic operating log" for data collection and data backup for the operation of a UV-C drinking water disinfection system, which records and stores the following functions via the individual measurement data transmitters, thereby ensuring continuous and incorruptible monitoring of the operation of a UV-C drinking water disinfection system and whose data printouts serve as an objective operating log:

The recorded data can be printed out or stored on demand in a computer system. Such an "electronic operating log" is particularly useful for small municipal drinking water supply systems, for companies and large construction sites, etc., where radio data transmission can also be provided.
To improve the quality of drinking water obtained from roof runoff water - rainwater - it is necessary to enrich it with minerals and other vital substances. This is done, for example, by adding these additives in a liquid phase by internal or external dosing of the liquid concentrate. In dosing devices with internal dosing, the sucked-in medium is mixed into the main flow, in this case disinfected drinking water, in the device drive. In dosing devices with external dosing, the sucked-in medium does not come into contact with the device drive. The mixing only takes place outside the dosing device. The spatial separation of the device drive and dosing head prevents uncontrolled mixing between the dosing medium and the main flow, even in the event of leaks.
In diesem Fall können dieIn addition to proportional dosing in the liquid phase, additives can also be added to the disinfected drinking water in solid form. In this case, the
Additives can also be added to the main stream in the form of a water-soluble powder or granulate. Another practical way of adding additives to the disinfected drinking water is to direct the main stream of disinfected drinking water over the additives at a controlled flow rate and flow rate, whereby these additives are absorbed by the water flowing past in the specified quantity. The required additives can be introduced into the main stream of disinfected drinking water, for example in the form of "slow release" tablets with a slow programmed release of the active ingredients in the form of a cartridge or similar structure, and can be replaced by a new cartridge after dissolving or being used up.
This gives you disinfected, healthy drinking water that is enriched with all the necessary minerals and other vital substances and is comparable in quality to the best well or spring water.
