Description
Die Erfindung betrifft Keramikkörper aus Siliciumnitrid (Si₃N₄), Siliciumdioxid (SiO₂) und Yttriumoxid (Y₂O₃) mit einer verbesserten Oxidationsbeständigkeit bei hohen Temperaturen. The invention relates to ceramic bodies made of silicon nitride (Si₃N₄), silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃) with improved oxidation resistance at high Temperatures.
From US-PS 40 73 845 it is known that Si₃N₄ powder, which contains cation impurities in an amount of at most 0.1 wt .-%, is in predominantly crystalline α- phase and / or amorphous phase and an average particle size of 3 µm (measured by the BET method), can be solidified by adding MgO or Y₂O₃ and sintered to a polycrystalline ceramic body with a density that is close to the theoretical density. Such powders can be hot-pressed at less stringent temperature and pressure conditions than they have to be used to press powders of lower purity and reactivity, or cold-pressing and sintering, which is not possible with powders of lower purity and responsiveness , are solidified. To produce such polycrystalline ceramic bodies, up to 25% by weight of yttrium oxide (Y₂O₃) or a rare earth oxide such as CeO₂ are generally added as a sintering or compacting aid.
Although it is known that these modifying additives a harmful influence on the maximum achievable High temperature strength and maximum resistance to Exercise creep, these additives have so far been for achieving the highest densities, which are also crucial for achieving high temperature resistance, considered indispensable.
Another characteristic of such ceramic bodies highly desirable with high strength at high temperatures is high oxidation resistance, in particular taking into account the fact that on certain areas of application, for example in motor vehicle engines, those at temperatures above such work that are compatible with superalloy materials are the oxidative attack in a corrosive environment is particularly pronounced. The oxidation resistance of the Ceramic body under these conditions should be enough to a significant deterioration in mechanical Strength over long periods of time even with such To prevent operating conditions.
From US-PS 41 02 698 ceramic bodies are made of the components Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ known, the one or more have unstable phases and thus a significant oxidation subject to high temperatures, which according to the Information in this patent specification in particular on its content of rare earth oxides.
The object of the invention was therefore to provide polycrystalline ceramic bodies to create from Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ that are not only have an extraordinarily high density that is close lies at the theoretical density, but at the same time are also resistant to oxidation at high temperatures.
It has now been found that this object is achieved according to the invention can be solved by a polycrystalline ceramic body, which is related to a specific composition has the components Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ and also SiO₂ and contains Y₂O₃ in critical concentrations.
The invention relates to a polycrystalline ceramic body made of Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃, characterized in that is that he a composition with respect to the components Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ has that within the triangular area of II of the ternary Si₃N₄-SiO₂-Y₂O₃ composition diagram which is bounded by the lines which the points Si₃N₄; Y₂O₃ · 2 SiO₂ and 10 Y₂O₃ · 9 SiO₂ · Si₃N₄ connects with each other, and 3 to 4 wt .-% SiO₂ and 3 to 13 wt .-% Y₂O₃ contains.
The ceramic body according to the invention surprisingly has a particularly good resistance to oxidation at high temperatures, although in U.S. Patent No. 41 02 698 the compositional range claimed here as unstable is referred to within which at high temperatures significant oxidation occurs. With the present Invention has been demonstrated to date is not correct, especially if the polycrystalline ceramic body claimed here specific composition in relation to the components Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ has and SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ in critical Concentrations of 3 to 4% by weight or 3 to 13% by weight contains.
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the Y₂O₃ content of the ceramic body according to the invention is 11 to 13% by weight, based on the total weight of Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃.
According to a further preferred embodiment of the invention the ceramic body contains less than 0.1% by weight of cation impurities.
The ceramic bodies according to the invention are particularly advantageous in those application areas that are good to excellent mechanical strength at high temperatures and require over long operating times. This is the case for example with vehicle and aircraft engines and related components such as regenerators and recuperators for recovery of waste heat.
The term "reactive powder" used here means a powder with an average particle size of less than 3 μm, measured by the BET method, which has an essentially crystalline α phase and amorphous phase. The term "amorphous" refers to a short-range solid which is characterized by a lack of X-ray diffraction intensity peaks and broad IR absorption peaks.
The term "Si₃N₄ body" used here denotes a polycrystalline body made of Si₃N₄ grains and one second intergranular phase, the SiO₂ as well as wanted and contains unwanted contaminants.
The terms "crystalline" and "polycrystalline" used here describe a ceramic body made up of Atoms, ions or molecules that are built into one certain patterns are arranged, which can be divided into three Dimensions repeated and the clear x-ray Diffraction intensity peaks of the crystal structure.
In particular, it was found that the Y₂O₃ content below of a value at which the composition Si₃N₄ · Y₂O₃ (1: 1) forms because one such composition, as has been shown, one destructive influence on oxidation resistance of the ceramic body.
Es zeigtThe invention is described below with reference to the Drawings explained in more detail. It shows

Fig. 2 is a graphical representation of the oxidation process, which results in a weight increase per surface area on the vertical axis in g / m², plotted against the Y₂O₃ content in% by weight indicated on the horizontal axis for an oxidation time of 6 hours at a temperature of 1200 ° C.
No. 6 25 330 beschrieben. The starting material Si₃N₄ can be an amorphous material, which partially crystallizes through heat treatment has been, or it can be a mixture of essentially completely amorphous material and essentially completely crystalline material. A manufacturing process of Si₃N₄ powder with the required purity, morphology and particle size is detailed in the US patent application Ser. No. 6 25 330.
In the following examples, the compositions were: Prepared hot presses. During a general procedure for hot pressing described below it turns out that alternative methods of manufacture of Si₃N₄ bodies also for reworking Suitable invention, z. B. hot isostatic pressing or a pressureless sintering after a suitable solidification such as dry pressing, isostatic pressing Extruding, slip casting, pressure spraying or the like A general process for unpressurized sintering of Silicon nitride bodies are described in US Pat. No. 4,073,845 described.
A general method for hot pressing is described below. Silicon nitride powder, consisting of 30 to 40 percent by weight amorphous silicon nitride and otherwise crystalline silicon nitride, with 95% of the crystalline silicon nitride in the α phase, 100 ppm cation impurities and 2 to 4% by weight SiO₂ with between 2 to 25% by weight Y₂O₃ mixed using methanol or a solution of toluene and approximately 3 percent by volume methanol to obtain a slurry, and this slurry is milled with Si₃N₄ milling media for about 1 hour to give a uniform ball-milled mixture of the starting powder. The slurry is then dried and sieved through a coarse mesh sieve with a 0.3-0.15 mm sieve opening. The dried material may have been dry milled 3 to 50 hours before sieving. The dried powder is then introduced into a graphite hot press tool, the inner surfaces of which have previously been coated with a boron nitrogen powder. The powder is then pressed at a pressure of 138 bar and then placed in a chamber containing argon, and a pressure of about 34.5 bar is applied up to about 1200 ° C, and then pressure and temperature are increased simultaneously, so that the final pressure and temperature are achieved at about the same time. This compression process is monitored using a dial gauge which indicates the piston travel within the die. A speed of the downward movement of the piston crosshead below approximately 0.010 cm / h indicates the completion of the compression process. At this point the assembly is cooled slowly over a period of about 1 to 2 hours. The final pressure of 207 to 345 bar and the final temperature of 1675 ° C to 1800 ° C for a period of 2 to 3 hours are sufficient conditions to achieve substantially complete densification of the silicon nitride body.
Table I shows 5 bodies, which Y₂O₃ contain and produced by this process with 5 different ratios of alpha Phase to amorphous phase in the starting silicon nitride powder. The mechanical strength is for some this body is given in Table I and Table II.
All strength measurements were in units of the breaking modulus (Modulus of Rupture; MOR in N / m²) and were carried out between room temperature and 1400 ° C, being a four point load holder with a outer wingspan of 2.3 cm and an inner Wingspan of 1.0 cm was used, which the sample was subjected to cross bending. The samples were there in the size of 0.127 cm × 0.254 cm × 2.54 cm in front. All hot pressed samples were on an Instron machine in the strong Direction tested at a crosshead speed of 0.05 cm per minute. The firmness was determined using the formula for elastic Bends, the dimensions of the test sample and the test holder. The theoretical density was due to the simple Mixing rule for Si₃N₄ and Y₂O₃ determined.
From Fig. 1, which is a pseudoternary phase diagram for Si₃N₄, SiO₂ and Y₂O₃ according to RR Wills et al., J. Materials Science, 11 (1976), p. 1305, it can be seen that there are 3 compatibility areas I, II and III there. According to the invention it was found that compositions within the compatibility range II, which contain 3-4 wt .-% SiO₂ and 3 to 13 wt .-% Y₂O₃, have an optimal oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. Compositions containing 3 wt .-% SiO₂ and more than 13 wt .-% Y₂O₃ fall in the compatibility range III and show a moderate to weak oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
This is shown graphically in Fig. 2, in which the weight increase per unit of the surface in g / m² is shown on the vertical axis over the content of Y₂O₃ in wt .-% on the horizontal axis. The weight increase increases slightly between 3.3 and 8 wt .-% Y₂O₃, increases between 8 and 10 wt .-% Y₂O₃ and falls between 10 and 13 wt .-% Y₂O₃. Above 13% by weight of Y₂O₃, the weight increase increases drastically up to 15% by weight of Y₂O₃ and then it drops at a moderate rate of up to 20% by weight of Y₂O₃, as can be seen from FIG. 2. But even with 20 wt .-% Y₂O₃, the weight gain is about seven times as large as between 3.3 and 10 wt .-% Y₂O₃. Based on this observation, compositions are preferred which contain 11 to 13 wt .-% Y₂O₃. Below 3 wt .-% Y₂O₃ the favored effect as a compression and / or sintering aid is probably reduced.
The significantly reduced resistance to oxidation within the compatibility area III is due to the presence the 1: 1 compound of Si₃N₄ · Y₂O₃ caused. This composition is the only phase that the Compatibility areas I, II and III is not common.
Therefore, if the SiO₂ content is below 3% by weight, to be expected that the simultaneous content of Y₂O₃, which causes the composition to fall within the compatibility range III is moved to a much lower resistance to oxidation the Si₃N₄ ceramic body leads.
