Abstract
Description
Flüssigkristall-Anzeigevorrichtung und VerfahrenLiquid crystal display device and method
The invention relates to a Liquid crystal display device according to the preamble of claim 1 and relates also relies on a process by which such a display can be manufactured. A liquid crystal cell of the type mentioned is known from DE-AS 21 59 165.
If the frame alone is no longer sufficient, the two carrier plates to keep at the required distance from each other, one is forced into the cell chamber insert further spacer elements. These spacers can, for example, as recommended in the publication cited at the beginning, be glass grains. Glass grains can be produced and applied relatively easily, but do not result in any particularly exact plate spacing, as it is achieved through a screening process selected and therefore scatter around a medium size. It stands to reason, therefore, instead Pieces of glass fiber that have long been known as a frame component (DE-OS 22 54 940), to be distributed via the display field. Glass fibers are not just easy to manufacture, but also have a well-defined diameter. However, it has surprisingly been found that glass fibers of their transverse dimensions cannot always guarantee the minimum distance to be expected. Also had to you find that with liquid crystal displays (FKA "s) with glass fiber spacing optical disturbances occurred again and again at the edges of the image segments.
The invention is based on the object of a liquid crystal display to create whose plates are reliably spaced from each other and whose Display quality is retained even over long operating times. These According to the invention, output is provided by a display device having the features of Claim 1 solved.
Der Lösungsvorschlag beruht auf folgender Beobachtung. The proposed solution is based on the following observation.
In the meantime there has been a general move towards the liquid crystal substance to be introduced into the display by a so-called "vacuum filling". At this Filling technology, the display and a liquid crystal container are placed in an evacuable one Vessel, pumps out, dips the display into the liquid and finally ventilates the container. During ventilation, there is a load on the glass fibers that make up the carrier plates only contact along a surface line, a pressure, in which they often burst. Fragments then wander around in the liquid crystal layer and are preferred by currents that arise when the layer is switched deposited at the segment edges.
There they damage the orientation layer, so it ends up being comes to the described distance errors and loss of contrast. The fiber optics would don't break when you look at the difference between external and internal pressures reduced by, for example, 100 Torr. Then, however, filling times would come about, which can no longer be accepted in the context of series production.
In the proposed SKA type, the spacer elements lie on the carrier plates flat, so that break-related fluctuations in distance and segment seams do not close are feared. In addition, the spacers do not present any manufacturing problems and can easily obtain cross-sections with narrow tolerances.
In DE-OS 24 Oó 623 there is already a note that the spacer particles among other things also have a cube shape and can be made of glass. These spacer cubes however, should only be embedded in the frame mass and also how the grains from the cited DE-AS 21 59 165 are produced and fractionated.
Vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen und Weiterbildungen der Erfindung sind Gegenstand zusätzlicher Ansprüche.Advantageous refinements and developments of the invention are Subject to additional claims.
The proposed solution should now be based on a preferred embodiment, which is shown in the attached figure in a schematic side section, are explained in more detail.
The figure shows a 7-segment liquid crystal display, which according to the Principle of the so-called rotary cell (DE-AS 21 58 563) works. The display contains in detail a front linear polarizer 1, a front support plate (front plate) 2y a rear support plate (back plate) 3, a rear, crossed to the front Linear polarizer 4 and a reflector 6. The two carrier plates are over a frame 7 hermetically sealed to one another. The one from the frame and the two The chamber limited to substrates is filled with a liquid crystal substance 8.
Both carrier plates are on their mutually facing sides with electrically conductive coatings (electrode segments 9 on the front plate, back electrode 11 on the back plate) and also with layers oriented parallel to the plate 12, 13 coated. Spacer elements 14 are used to separate the two substrates provided, which are located in the liquid crystal chamber. These spacers are in the present case pieces of glass fiber with a rectangular profile.
The glass fiber can be easily produced as follows: Man pulls a rectangular glass rod out into a fiber at elevated temperatures, which then also have a rectangular cross-section, but with a slightly rounded one Edge, receives. The edge rounding can be reduced if you stick from a glass goes out with "pillow" profile.
Rectangular fibers can also be made from differently preformed glass rods generate, for example, if the glass is designed by a suitable The nozzle pulls or the still hot fibers are flattened immediately behind the drawing furnace.
Bewährt haben sich Teilchen mit folgenden Größenrelationen: 1,3 4 b/a 4 2,5 und 1,3 4 c/a g 15 (a = Höhe, b = Breite und c = Lange des Partikels).The dimensions of the fiber sections can vary within wide limits. Particles with the following size relationships have proven useful: 1.3 4 b / a 4 2.5 and 1.3 4 c / a g 15 (a = height, b = width and c = length of the particle).
The spacers are sensibly applied through a sieve, in such a way that only the segment-free areas of the carrier plate fiber sections received and that no two spacer elements come to rest on top of each other. The sifted Particle pattern is retained in the subsequent work steps because the fibers can't roll away.
When it comes to extremely high brittleness or when If you also use less stable materials, it is advisable to use the spacer elements to make hollow or to cover with a layer that is constantly under a mechanical one Compressive stress is. Because a hollow body reacts relatively ela -stich to pressure loads Compressive stresses in the outer skin reduce the influence of micro-cracks in the fiber surface, which, as is well known, lead to local excessive stresses and thus the strength reduce. Incidentally, both measures also improve with spacer elements with other profiles the resilience.
Hollow spacers can be used in the same way as spacers manufacture with a full profile.
To create a pressure cuff one could either use a cover with a lower coefficient of thermal expansion at elevated temperatures apply or use a sheath material with a lower viscosity and so that the fiber surrounds as long as it is still clamped in the pulling device and is therefore under tension.
Since the spacers have large contact surfaces, it is advisable to some of these particles act as contact bridges for the electrode through-hole plating to use. It is sufficient if the contact spacer elements, which then make sense are housed in the frame, only made electrically conductive on their surface For this purpose, one could, for example, put quartz glass fibers in an aluminum bath dive.
The invention is not limited to the illustrated embodiment. So the spacers do not need to be strictly cuboid, as it is only it is important to create two contact surfaces that are exactly spaced from one another. In this respect, spacers are also conceivable, the width of which varies along the longitudinal axis , increases from small values at the ends towards the middle. For the rest, be on it pointed out that the spacer elements "rest" against the carrier plates even if these are provided with one or more layers.
