Fibers are generally made with connectors rather than through a Splice connected.
According to the invention, a new tool is provided with which two optical fibers can be spliced. For this purpose, the two optical fibers are inserted into the splice using a microscope. With the microscope becomes mutual Check the position of the fiber ends as they pass through an opening in the heat-contractible cladding of the splice become visible. The position of the optical fibers is fixed with holding members. These touch the optical fibers and the fiber layers are then held in place by adding a resin into the opening. Eventually the resin hardens and the in the heat-contractible jacket is shrunk by supplying warm air. This is done with an electric heater, which is located at an opening under the splice point,

You leave a circled longitudinal passage with a diameter slightly is above the outside diameter of fibers 14 and 16. When the heat-collapsible jacket 20 is a heat source is exposed, it contracts and changes the positions of the fibers 14 and 16 and the support rods 18 so that the former are firmly held by the support rods 18. Below will be described in detail that an opening 22 for observation the location of the ends 24 and 26 of the fibers 14 and 16 as well as the application of an epoxy resin to the fiber ends 24 and 26 is provided.
The device 10 includes a solid plate 28. In this is a recess 30 (see Fig. 2) with the general outline of the Splice 12 molded in. The recess 30 is dimensioned so that there is a tight fit with the splice 12 and this so that it is held in the desired orientation. Next to the recess 30 are two spring clips 32 and 34 with fasteners 36 or 38 attached to the plate 28. As shown in Fig. 1, the spring clip 32 holds the fiber 14 in place while the spring clip 34 holds the fiber 16 in place. An opening 40 also extends from within the recess 30 Upper side 42 of plate 28 to its lower side 44.

Feet 62 hold the plate 28 over a support surface on which the device 10 rests.
In the desired position, the ends 24 and 26 of the fibers 14 and 16 appear in the splice 12. This is through the opening 22 (Fig. 4) can be seen. To bring the fiber ends into their position, the fitter observes the fiber ends 14 and 16 through a Microscope 64. This is fastened to the plate 28 with a carrier 66. A light source 68 is with a bracket 70 on the microscope 64 and ensures adequate lighting in the field of view of the microscope 64.
Nun werden ein oder zwei Tropfen 72 eines in Wärme härtbaren indexWhen using the device 10 for splicing optical Fibers 14 and 16 clamps the fitter a splice 12 in the recess 30 in the plate 28. He ensures that the opening 22 faces upwards. Then fiber 14 goes into one end of splice 12 and fiber 16 into the other end inserted. The area surrounding the opening 22 of the splice 12 is then created by properly orienting the light source 68 illuminated. The surgeon then focuses the microscope 64 until he can see the interior of the splice 12 through the opening 22 can see exactly. The OperatBur then shifts the fibers 14 and 16 until their ends 24 and 26 are those shown in FIG Take position. The ends 24 and 26 then lie in the center line of the splice. After this setting up the fibers 14 and 16, the spring clips 32 and 34 are placed on the fibers and fix them for the subsequent processes. so one or two drops 72 of a heat curable index
