Abstract

Acrylic polymers having mol. wts. of 5000-30000, pref. 8000-20000, are added at a loading of >50, pref. 50-500 g/t, to reduce the viscosity of 'red muds', ie. aqueous suspensions contg. 10-55% residual solids from alumina extraction from bauxite. Pref. the polymers are copolymers based on >=50% acrylic acid and 10-30% methylmethacrylate, added as 0.25-3.2, pref. 0.25-0.68 kg of a 20% aq. soln. of polymer per tonne of mud solids. The additive fluidises the muds to enchange the efficiency of settling and filtration processes and to allow the suspensions to be pumped successfully.

Description

pensionen von Rotschlamm.pensions of red mud.

The practically universally applied process for the production of aluminum oxide is the Bayer process. In the broadest sense, this process is carried out almost exclusively in aqueous solution and is achieved by reacting bauxite and a strong base such as caustic soda or calcium hydroxide in an autoclave heated with steam, whereby the aluminum oxide is converted into the soluble aluminate form. In this step, a considerable amount of insoluble impurities accumulate or are released from the bauxite, which have to be separated from the desired alumina constituent. These residues, commonly referred to as red mud, include iron oxides, sodium aluminosilicate, titanium oxide, and other materials. In general and is used again at the following throughputs.

After the final washing step, the sludge is usually concentrated by vacuum filtration or other means into a plastic mass which is transported and exposed to action genes for handling liquids are treated and processed, which would be a significant improvement in this technique.

If, for example, they are used in a 20% strength by weight aqueous solution, about 227 g to 3.18 kg and preferably 227 g to 680 g of the 20% strength aqueous solution of the acrylic acid polymer are used per metric ton of dry red mud.

Ein bevorzugter Molekulargewichtsbereich liegt zwischen 8.000 und 20.000.As indicated, the molecular weights of these polymers can vary between 5,000 and 30,000. A preferred molecular weight range is between 8,000 and 20,000.

Merizates can either be homopolymers or copolymers of acrylic acid. If they are used as copolymers, they should contain at least 50% by weight of acrylic acid. These acrylic acid polymers are preferably used in the form of their alkali or ammonium salts.

An expedient process for the preparation of acrylic acid copolymers and homopolymers consists in the alkaline hydrolysis of low molecular weight polyacrylonitrile (see US Pat. No. 3,419,502). These materials generally contain up to 85 g of acrylate functionality after this hydrolysis step. The polymer generally also has some amide functionality and also some nitrile functionality. net.
